Contractible flow of stability conditions via global dimension function

We introduce an analytic method that uses the global dimension function $\operatorname{gldim}$ to produce contractible flows on the space $\operatorname{Stab}\mathcal{D}$ of stability conditions on a triangulated category $\mathcal{D}$. In the case when $\mathcal{D}=\mathcal{D}(\mathbf{S}^λ)$ is the topological Fukaya category of a graded surface $\mathbf{S}^λ$, we show that $\operatorname{gldim}^{-1}(0,y)$ contracts to $\operatorname{gldim}^{-1}(0,x)$ for any $1\le x\le y$, provided $(x,y)$ does not contain `critical' values $\{1+w_\partial/m_\partial \mid w_\partial\ge0, \partial\in\partial\mathbf{S}^λ\}$, where the pair $(m_\partial,w_\partial)$ consists of the number $m_\partial$ of marked points and the winding number $w_\partial$ associated to a boundary component $\partial$ of $\mathbf{S}^λ$. One consequence is that the global dimension of $\mathcal{D}(\mathbf{S}^λ)$ must be one of these critical values. Besides, we remove the assumptions in Kikuta-Ouchi-Takahashi's classification result on triangulated categories with global dimension less than 1.

Geometric model for module categories of Dynkin quivers via hearts of total stability conditions

We derive a geometric model for the module category $\operatorname{mod} \mathbf{k} Q$ of a Dynkin quiver $Q$ via the heart of a total stability condition on the bounded derived category of $\operatorname{mod} \mathbf{k} Q$. As an application, we prove Reineke's conjecture that there is a stability function on $\operatorname{mod} \mathbf{k} Q$ making any indecomposables stable.

Radio jet-ISM interaction and positive radio-mechanical feedback in Abell 1795

We present XSHOOTER observations with previous ALMA, MUSE and $HST$ observations to study the nature of radio-jet triggered star formation and the interaction of radio jets with the interstellar medium in the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) in the Abell 1795 cluster. Using $HST$ UV data we determined an ongoing star formation rate of 9.3 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. The star formation follows the global Kennicutt-Schmidt law, however, it has a low efficiency compared to circumnuclear starbursts in nearby galaxies with an average depletion time of $\sim$1 Gyr. The star formation and molecular gas are offset by $\sim1$ kpc indicating that stars have decoupled from the gas. We detected an arc of high linewidth in ionized gas where electron densities are elevated by a factor of $\sim$4 suggesting a shock front driven by radio jets or peculiar motion of the BCG. An analysis of nebular emission line flux ratios suggests that the gas is predominantly ionized by star formation with a small contribution from shocks. We also calculated the velocity structure function (VSF) of the ionized and molecular gases using velocity maps to characterize turbulent motion in the gas. The ionized gas VSF suggests that the radio jets are driving supersonic turbulence in the gas. Thus radio jets can not only heat the atmosphere on large scales and may quench star formation on longer timescales while triggering star formation in positive feedback on short timescales of a few million years.

Signature of Supersonic Turbulence in Galaxy Clusters Revealed by AGN-driven H$α$ Filaments

The hot intracluster medium (ICM) is thought to be quiescent with low observed velocity dispersions. Surface brightness fluctuations of the ICM also suggest that its turbulence is subsonic with a Kolmogorov scaling relation, indicating that the viscosity is suppressed and the kinetic energy cascades to small scales unscathed. However, recent observations of the cold gas filaments in galaxy clusters find that the scaling relations are steeper than that of the hot plasma, signaling kinetic energy losses and the presence of supersonic flows. In this work we use high-resolution simulations to explore the turbulent velocity structure of the cold filaments at the cores of galaxy clusters. Our results indicate that supersonic turbulent structures can be "frozen" in the cold gas that cools and fragments out of a fast, $10^7$ K outflow driven by the central active galactic nucleus (AGN), when the radiative cooling time is shorter than the dynamical sound-crossing time. After the cold gas formation, however, the slope of the velocity structure function (VSF) flattens significantly over short, 10 Myr timescales. The lack of flattened VSF in observations of H$α$ filaments indicates that the H$α$-emitting phase is short-lived for the cold gas in galaxy clusters. On the other hand, the ubiquity of supersonic turbulence revealed by observed filaments strongly suggests that supersonic outflows are an integral part of AGN-ICM interaction, and that AGN activity plays a crucial role at driving turbulence in galaxy clusters.

Milli-Hertz Gravitational Wave Background Produced by Quasi-Periodic Eruptions

Extreme-mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs) are important targets for future space-borne gravitational-wave (GW) detectors, such as the Laser Interferometer Sapce Antenna (LISA). Recent works suggest that EMRI may reside in a population of newly discovered X-ray transients called "quasi-periodic eruptions" (QPEs). Here we follow this scenario and investigate the detectability of the five recently discovered QPEs by LISA. We consider two specific models in which the QPEs are made of either stellar-mass objects moving on circular orbits around massive black holes (MBHs) or white dwarfs (WDs) on eccentric orbits around MBHs. We find that in either case each QPE is too weak to be resolvable by LISA. However, if QPEs are made of eccentric WD-MBH binaries, they radiate GWs in a wide range of frequencies. The broad spectra overlap to form a background which, between $0.003-0.02$ Hz, exceeds the background known to exist due to other types of sources. Presence of this GW background in the LISA band could impact the future search for the seed black holes at high redshift as well as the stellar-mass binary black holes in the local universe.

On the Mass Loading of AGN-Driven Outflows in Elliptical Galaxies and Clusters

Outflows driven by active galactic nuclei (AGN) are an important channel for accreting supermassive black holes (SMBHs) to interact with their host galaxies and clusters. Properties of the outflows are however poorly constrained due to the lack of kinetically resolved data of the hot plasma that permeates the circumgalactic and intracluster space. In this work, we use a single parameter, outflow-to-accretion mass-loading factor $m=\dot{M}_{\rm out}/\dot{M}_{\rm BH}$, to characterize the outflows that mediate the interaction between SMBHs and their hosts. By modeling both M87 and Perseus, and comparing the simulated thermal profiles with the X-ray observations of these two systems, we demonstrate that $m$ can be constrained between $200-500$. This parameter corresponds to a bulk flow speed between $4,000-7,000\,{\rm km\,s}^{-1}$ at around 1 kpc, and a thermalized outflow temperature between $10^{8.7}-10^{9}\,{\rm K}$. Our results indicate that the dominant outflow speeds in giant elliptical galaxies and clusters are much lower than in the close vicinity of the SMBH, signaling an efficient coupling with and deceleration by the surrounding medium on length scales below 1 kpc. Consequently, AGNs may be efficient at launching outflows $\sim10$ times more massive than previously uncovered by measurements of cold, obscuring material. We also examine the mass and velocity distribution of the cold gas, which ultimately forms a rotationally supported disk in simulated clusters. The rarity of such disks in observations indicates that further investigations are needed to understand the evolution of the cold gas after it forms.

The Interplay of Kinetic and Radiative Feedback in Galaxy Clusters

Recent observations provide evidence that some cool-core clusters (CCCs) host quasars in their brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). Motivated by these findings we use 3D radiation-hydrodynamic simulations with the code Enzo to explore the joint role of the kinetic and radiative feedback from supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in BCGs. We implement kinetic feedback as sub-relativistic plasma outflows and model radiative feedback using the ray-tracing radiative transfer or thermal energy injection. In our simulations the central SMBH transitions between the radiatively efficient and radiatively inefficient states on timescales of a few Gyr, as a function of its accretion rate. The timescale for this transition depends primarily on the fraction of power allocated to each feedback mode, and to a lesser degree on the overall feedback luminosity of the active galactic nucleus (AGN). Specifically, we find that (a) kinetic feedback must be present at both low and high accretion rates in order to prevent the cooling catastrophe, and (b) its contribution likely accounts for > 10% of the total AGN feedback power, since below this threshold simulated BCGs tend to host radio-loud quasars most of the time, in apparent contrast with observations. We also find a positive correlation between the AGN feedback power and the mass of the cold gas filaments in the cluster core, indicating that observations of H$α$ filaments can be used as a measure of AGN feedback.

Decomposition of Graphs into $(k,r)$-Fans and Single Edges

Let $ϕ(n,H)$ be the largest integer such that, for all graphs $G$ on $n$ vertices, the edge set $E(G)$ can be partitioned into at most $ϕ(n, H)$ parts, of which every part either is a single edge or forms a graph isomorphic to $H$. Pikhurko and Sousa conjectured that $ϕ(n,H)=\ex(n,H)$ for $χ(H)\geqs3$ and all sufficiently large $n$, where $\ex(n,H)$ denotes the maximum number of edges of graphs on $n$ vertices that does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. A $(k,r)$-fan is a graph on $(r-1)k+1$ vertices consisting of $k$ cliques of order $r$ which intersect in exactly one common vertex. In this paper, we verify Pikhurko and Sousa's conjecture for $(k,r)$-fans. The result also generalizes a result of Liu and Sousa.

Exchange graphs and Ext quivers

We study the oriented exchange graph $\textrm{EG}^\circ(Γ_{N}\,Q)$ of reachable hearts in the finite-dimensional derived category $\mathcal{D}(Γ_{N}\,Q)$ of the CY-$N$ Ginzburg algebra $Γ_{N}Q$ associated to an acyclic quiver $Q$. We show that any such heart is induced from some heart in the bounded derived category $\mathcal{D}(Q)$ via some `Lagrangian immersion' $\mathcal{L}:\mathcal{D}(Q)\to\mathcal{D}(Γ_{N}\,Q)$. We build on this to show that the quotient of $\textrm{EG}^\circ(Γ_{N}\,Q)$ by the Seidel-Thomas braid group is the exchange graph $\textrm{CEG}_{N-1}(Q)$ of cluster tilting sets in the (higher) cluster category $\mathcal{C}_{N-1}(Q)$. As an application, we interpret Buan-Thomas' coloured quiver for a cluster tilting set in terms of the Ext quiver of any corresponding heart in $\mathcal{D}(Γ_{N}\,Q)$.

Extremal graph for intersecting odd cycles

An extremal graph for a graph $H$ on $n$ vertices is a graph on $n$ vertices with maximum number of edges that does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. Let $T_{n,r}$ be the Turán graph, which is the complete $r$-partite graph on $n$ vertices with part sizes that differ by at most one. The well-known Turán Theorem states that $T_{n,r}$ is the only extremal graph for complete graph $K_{r+1}$. Erdös et al. (1995) determined the extremal graphs for intersecting triangles and Chen et al. (2003) determined the maximum number of edges of the extremal graphs for intersecting cliques. In this paper, we determine the extremal graphs for intersecting odd cycles.

Stability conditions and quantum dilogarithm identities for Dynkin quivers

We study fundamental group of the exchange graphs for the bounded derived category D(Q) of a Dynkin quiver Q and the finite-dimensional derived category D(Γ_N Q) of the Calabi-Yau-N Ginzburg algebra associated to Q. In the case of D(Q), we prove that its space of stability conditions (in the sense of Bridgeland) is simply connected; as applications, we show that its Donanldson-Thomas invariant can be calculated via a quantum dilogarithm function on exchange graphs. In the case of D(Γ_N Q), we show that faithfulness of the Seidel-Thomas braid group action (which is known for Q of type A or N = 2) implies the simply connectedness of its space of stability conditions.

Tagged mapping class groups: Auslander-Reiten translation

We give a geometric realization, the tagged rotation, of the AR-translation on the generalized cluster category associated to a surface $\mathbf{S}$ with marked points and non-empty boundary, which generalizes Brüstle-Zhang's result for the puncture free case. As an application, we show that the intersection of the shifts in the 3-Calabi-Yau derived category $\mathcal{D}(Γ_{\mathbf{S}})$ associated to the surface and the corresponding Seidel-Thomas braid group of $\mathcal{D}(Γ_{\mathbf{S}})$ is empty, unless $\mathbf{S}$ is a polygon with at most one puncture (i.e. of type A or D).

Ext-quivers of hearts of A-type and the orientation of associahedron

We classify the Ext-quivers of hearts in the bounded derived category D(A_n) and the finite-dimensional derived category D(Γ_N A_n) of the Calabi-Yau-N Ginzburg algebra D(Γ_N A_n). This provides the classification for Buan-Thomas' colored quiver for higher clusters of A-type. We also give explicit combinatorial constructions from a binary tree with n+2 leaves to a torsion pair in mod k\overrightarrow{A_n} and a cluster tilting set in the corresponding cluster category, for the straight oriented A-type quiver \overrightarrow{A_n}. As an application, we show that the orientation of the n-dimensional ssociahedron induced by poset structure of binary trees coincides with the orientation induced by poset structure of torsion pairs in mod k\overrightarrow{A_n} (under the correspondence above).
