Mott dissociation and kaon to pion ratio in the EPNJL model

The behaviour of pseudoscalar mesons within the SU(3)PNJL-like models is considered for finite T and $μ_B$. We compare the pole approximation (Breit-Wigner) with the Beth-Uhlenbeck approach. We evaluate the $K/π$ ratios along the phase transition line in the T-$μ_B$ plane with constant and $T/μ_B$-dependent pion and strange quark chemical potentials. Using the model, we can show that the splitting of kaon and anti-kaon masses appears as a result of introduction of density and this explains the difference in the $K^+/π^+$ ratio and $K^-/π^-$ ratio at low $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ and their tendency to the same value at high $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$. A sharp "horn" effect in the $K^+/π^+$ ratio is explained by the enhanced pion production which can be described by occurrence of a nonequilibrium pion chemical potential of the order of the pion mass. We elucidate that the horn effect is not related to the existence of a critical endpoint in the QCD phase diagram.

The role of the chiral phase transition in modelling the kaon to pion ratio

A sharp peak in the $K^+/π^+$ ratio in relativistic heavy-ion collision is discussed in the framework of the SU(3) Polyakov-loop extended NJL model with vector interaction. In the model, the $K^+/π^+$ ratio was calculated along the chiral phase transition line for different values of the vector coupling $g_V$. We showed that the value of the vector coupling had no significant effect on the $K^+/π^+$ behaviour.

Impact of the vector interaction on the phase structure of QCD matter

The 2-flavor Polyakov-loop extended model is generalized by taking into account the effective four-quark vector-type interaction with the coupling strengths, which are endowed with a dependence on the Polyakov field $Φ$. The effective vertex generates entanglement interaction between the Polyakov loop and the chiral condensate. We investigate the influence of an additional quark vector interaction and the entanglement interaction on the location of the critical end-point at the given chemical potential or quark density. It is shown that the finite value of the vector interaction strength $G_{\rm v}$ improves the model agreement with the lattice data. The influence of the non-zero $G_{\rm v}$ and entanglement on the thermodynamic observables and the curvature of the crossover boundary in the $T-μ$ plane is also examined.

Pion dissociation and Levinson's theorem in hot PNJL quark matter

Pion dissociation by the Mott effect in quark plasma is described within the generalized Beth-Uhlenbeck approach on the basis of the PNJL model which allows for a unified description of bound, resonant and scattering states. As a first approximation, we utilize the Breit-Wigner ansatz for the spectral function and clarify its relation to the complex mass pole solution of the pion Bethe-Salpeter equation. Application of the Levinson theorem proves that describing the pion Mott dissociation solely by means of spectral broadening of the pion bound state beyond T_Mott leaves out a significant aspect. Thus we acknowledge the importance of the continuum of scattering states and show its role for the thermodynamics of pion dissociation.

Pion and sigma meson dissociation in a modified NJL model at finite temperature

We investigate pion and sigma meson correlations in hot quark matter within a modified NJL model. Special emphasis is on the transformation of mesonic bound states to resonances (Mott dissociation) when due to the partial chiral symmetry restoration with increasing temperature the threshold of quark-antiquark continuum states drops below the meson mass at the corresponding Mott temperature. The description is based on evaluating the polarization functions for quark-antiquark (meson) correlations as a function of the temperature and the results can be represented by introducing modulus and phase of the complex propagator functions for the mesonic states. We study the effect of modelling confinement by introducing a low-momentum cutoff in loop integrals. We make the ansatz that this cutoff is identified with the dynamically generated quark mass gap and find an increase of the continuum threshold which makes the otherwise unbound sigma meson a bound state in the vacuum. We discuss the in-medium behavior of the mesonic phase shifts including the Mott effect and find accordance with the Levinson theorem.

D mesons at finite temperature and density in the PNJL model

We study D meson resonances in hot, dense quark matter within the NJL model and its Polyakov-loop extension. We show that the mass splitting between D^+ and D^- mesons is moderate, not in excess of 100 MeV. When the decay channel into quasifree quarks opens (Mott effect) at densities above twice saturation density, the decay width reaches rapidly the value of 200 MeV which entails a spectral broadening sufficient to open J/psi dissociation processes. Contrary to results from hadronic mean-field theories, the chiral quark model does not support the scenario of a dropping D meson masses so that scenarios for J/psi dissociation by quark rearrangement built on the lowering of the threshold for this process in a hot and dense medium have to be reconsidered and should account for the spectral broadening.

Decay of a scalar $σ$-meson near the critical end-point in the PNJL model

Properties of a scalar $σ$-meson are investigated in the two-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with the Polyakov loop. Model analysis of the phase diagram of strong interacting matter is performed. The temperature dependence of the $σ\rightarrowππ$ decay width is studied at the zero chemical potential and near the critical end-point. The calculated strong coupling constant $g_{σππ}$ and the decay width are compared with available experimental data and other model results. Nonthermal enhancement of the total decay width is noted for the $σ$ meson near the critical end-point when the condition $m_σ\geq2m_π$ is broken.

Meson formfactor scheme for the chiral Lagrangian approach to J/psi breakup cross sections motivated by a relativistic quark model

We suggest a new scheme for the introduction of formfactors for the SU(4) chiral meson Lagrangian approach to the J/psi breakup cross sections by pion and rho meson impact. This mesonic formfactor scheme respects the fact that on the quark level of description the contact and the meson exchange diagrams are constructed by so-called box and triangle diagrams which contain a different number of vertex functions for the quark-meson coupling. We present a model calculation for Gaussian vertex functions within the meson formfactor scheme and compare the results with those of the usual global formfactor model. We calibrate the new meson formfactor model with results for the pion impact processes from a relativistic quark model calculation by Ivanov et al. and present predictions for the rho-meson induced processes. We provide a fit formula for the resulting energy-dependent cross sections.

Effective restoration of the U_A(1) symmetry with temperature and density

We investigate the full U(3)$\otimes$U(3) chiral symmetry restoration, at finite temperature and density, on the basis of a quark model which incorporates the most relevant properties of QCD in this context: explicit and spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry and axial U$_A$(1) symmetry breaking. A specific lattice-inspired behavior of the topological susceptibility, combined with the convergence of chiral partners, signals the onset of an effective chiral symmetry restoration. The results suggest that the axial part of the symmetry is restored before the possible restoration of the full U(3)$\otimes$U(3) chiral symmetry can occur. This conclusion is valid in the context of both finite temperature and density.

Survey of heavy-meson observables

We employ a Dyson-Schwinger equation model to effect a unified and uniformly accurate description of light- and heavy-meson observables, which we characterise by heavy-meson leptonic decays, semileptonic heavy-to-heavy and heavy-to-light transitions - B -> D*, D, rho, pi; D -> K*, K, pi, radiative and strong decays - B(s)* -> B(s) gamma; D(s)* -> D(s) gamma, D pi, and the rare B-> K* gamma flavour-changing neutral-current process. We elucidate the heavy-quark limit of these processes and, using a model-independent mass formula valid for all nonsinglet pseudoscalar mesons, demonstrate that their mass rises linearly with the mass of their heaviest constituent. In our numerical calculations we eschew a heavy-quark expansion and rely instead on the observation that the dressed c,b-quark mass functions are well approximated by a constant, interpreted as their constituent-mass: we find M_c=1.32 GeV and M_b=4.65 GeV. The calculated heavy-meson leptonic decay constants and transition form factors are a necessary element in the experimental determination of CKM matrix elements. The results also show that this framework, as employed hitherto, is well able to describe vector meson polarisation observables.

Semileptonic decays of heavy mesons

The semileptonic and leptonic decays of heavy mesons are studied as a phenomenological application and exploration of a heavy-quark limit of Dyson-Schwinger equations. The single form factor, $ξ(w)$, which characterises the semileptonic decay in this limit, is calculated and compares well with recent experimental extractions. We obtain a lower bound of 1/3 on the slope-parameter $ρ^2 \equiv -ξ^\prime(1)$, which, in calculations with realistic input, is exceeded by a great deal: agreement with experimental data requiring $ρ^2 \sim 1.2 - 1.6$. The flavour and momentum dependence of the light-quark propagators has observable consequences.
