Negative Thermal Expansion in Solid Deuteromethane

The thermal expansion at constant pressure of solid CD$_4$ III is calculated for the low temperature region where only the rotational tunneling modes are essential and the effect of phonons and librons can be neglected. It is found that in mK region there is a giant peak of the negative thermal expansion. The height of this peak is comparable or even exceeds the thermal expansion of solid N$_2$, CO, O$_2$ or CH$_4$ in their triple points. It is shown that like in the case of light methane, the effect of pressure is quite unusual: as evidenced from the pressure dependence of the thermodynamic Grüneisen parameter (which is negative and large in the absolute value), solid CD$_4$ becomes increasingly quantum with rising pressure.

The Effect of Pressure on the Negative Thermal Expansion of Solid Methane

The effect of pressure on the thermal expansion of solid CH$_4$ is calculated for the low temperature region where the contributions from phonons and librons can be neglected and only the rotational tunnelling modes are essential. The effect of pressure is shown to increase the magnitude of the peaks of the negative thermal expansion and shifts the positions of the peaks to the low-temperature region, which goes asymptotically to zero temperature with increasing pressure. The Gruneisen thermodynamical parameter for the rotational tunnelling modes is calculated. It is large, negative, and increases in magnitude with rising pressure.

Elastic anisotropy and Poisson's ratio of solid helium under pressure

The elastic moduli, elastic anisotropy coefficients, sound velocities and Poisson's ratio of hcp solid helium have been calculated using density functional theory in generalized gradient approximation (up to $30$ TPa), and pair+triple semi-empirical potentials (up to 100 GPa). Zero-point vibrations have been treated in the Debye approximation assuming $^4$He isotope (we exclude the quantum-crystal region at very low pressures from consideration). Both methods give a reasonable agreement with the available experimental data. Our calculations predict significant elastic anisotropy of helium ($\triangle P \approx 1.14$, $\triangle S_1 \approx 1.7$, $\triangle S_2 \approx 0.93$ at low pressures). Under terapascal pressures helium becomes more elastically isotropic. At the metallization point there is a sharp feature in the elastic modulus $C_S$, which is the stiffness with respect to the isochoric change of the $c/a$ ratio. This is connected with the previously obtained sharp minimum of the $c/a$ ratio at the metallization point. Our calculations confirm the previously measured decrease of the Poisson's ratio with increasing pressure. This is not a quantum effect, as the same sign of the pressure effect was obtained when we disregarded zero-point vibrations. At TPa pressures Poisson's ratio reaches the value of $0.31$ at the theoretical metallization point ($V_{mol}=0.228$ cm$^3$/mol, $p=17.48$ TPa) and $0.29$ at 30 TPa. For $p=0$ we predict a Poisson's ratio of $0.38$ which is in excellent agreement with the low-$p$-low-$T$ experimental data.

Poisson's ratio in cryocrystals under pressure

We present results of lattice dynamics calculations of Poisson's ratio (PR) for solid hydrogen and rare gas solids (He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe) under pressure. Using two complementary approaches - the semi-empirical many-body calculations and the first-principle density-functional theory calculations we found three different types of pressure dependencies of PR. While for solid helium PR monotonically decreases with rising pressure, for Ar, Kr, and Xe it monotonically increases with pressure. For solid hydrogen and Ne the pressure dependencies of PR are non-monotonic displaying rather deep minimums. The role of the intermolecular potentials in this diversity of patterns is discussed.

Crystal field and related phenomena in hexagonal close-packed H2 and D2 under pressure

The lattice distortion parameter (the deviation of the c/a ratio from the ideal value 1.633), orientational order parameter, and crystal-field parameter in hexagonal close-packed (hcp) lattice of p-H2, o-D2 and n-H2 are calculated using the semi-empirical lattice-dynamic approach. It is shown that the lattice distortion in the J-even species is two order of magnitude smaller compared with that found in n-H2, and n-D2. The difference is due to the splitting of the J-odd rotational levels in the J-even - J-odd mixtures.

Sound velocities of hexagonal close-packed H2 and He under pressure

Bulk, shear, and compressional aggregate sound velocities of hydrogen and helium in the close- packed hexagonal structure are calculated over a wide pressure range using two complementary approaches: semi-empirical lattice dynamics based on the many-body intermolecular potentials and density-functional theory in the generalized gradient approximation. The sound velocities are used to calculate pressure dependence of the Debye temperature. The comparison between experiment and first-principle and semi-empirical calculations provide constraints on the density dependence of intermolecular interactions in the zero-temperature limit.

Equation of state and Raman-active $E_{2g}$ lattice phonon in phases I, II, and III of solid hydrogen and deuterium

We present results of lattice dynamics calculations of the $P-V$ equation of state and the pressure dependence of the Raman-active $E_{2g}$ lattice phonon for $p-$H$_2$ and $o-$D$_2$ in a wide pressure range up to $\sim$2 Mbar using our recently developed semi-empirical many-body potential, and density-functional theory. Comparison with existing body of experimental and theoretical results showed that the employed many-body potential is a reliable basis for high-precision calculations for phases I, II, and III of solid hydrogens.

Lattice distortion in hcp rare gas solids

The lattice distortion parameter $δ\equiv c/a-\sqrt{8/3}$ has been calculated as a function of molar volume for the hcp phases of He, Ar, Kr and Xe. Results from both semi-empirical potentials and density functional theory are presented. Our study shows that $δ$ is negative for helium in the entire pressure range. For Ar, Kr and Xe, however, $δ$ changes sign from negative to positive as the pressure increases, growing rapidly in magnitude at higher pressures.
