Observer Dependence in Consistent Histories and General Relativity

Observer dependence is central to Quantum Mechanics; in particular if we associate consistent sets with observer worldviews we can think of the Consistent Histories (CH) interpretation as a formalisation of observer dependence. However we lack a theory of the observers themselves. In this paper we begin by building such a theory within General Relativity (GR), and find that this framework bears close mathematical resemblance to the treatment of consistent sets in CH. We therefore adapt the CHSH framework to identify the `gap' between the classical and quantum theories. We find that the CHSH argument does not hold on a curved background, so that the inequality may be violated by classical theories.

Coevents as Beables

Sorkin's coevents can be thought of as the `beables' of a quantum histories theory; in this paper we study the 'logical' implications of taking this claim at face value, constructing a propositional lattice for the space of coevents applicable to a given histories theory and comparing it to the more traditional propositional lattice of events. In particular we focus on multiplicative coevents, and find that the precise nature of their anhomomorphism leads to a particularly simple relationship between the two propositional lattices. Finally, we notice that our constructions contain elements intuitively similar to topos nations of truth values and use this to suggest a means of applying Isham's topos theoretic constructions to multiplicative coevents.

Consistent Histories as Valuations

Sorkin's coevent interpretation shifts the focus of quantum logic from the structure of a propositional lattice to the nature of truth valuations thereon. We apply this shift in emphasis to a simple formulation of the consistent histories approach, expressing it in terms of truth valuations which are brought together in a logical framework. We see that these consistent histories valuations are related to Sorkin's multiplicative coevents, and that they can be naturally described by an adaptation of Isham's early topos-theoretic approach.

Matter: Space without Time

While Quantum Gravity remains elusive and Quantum Field Theory retains the interpretational difficulties of Quantum Mechanics, we have introduced an alternate approach to the unification of particles, fields, space and time, suggesting that the concept of matter as space without time provides a framework which unifies matter with spacetime and in which we anticipate the development of complete theories (ideally a single unified theory) describing observed 'particles, charges, fields and forces' solely with the geometry of our matter-space-time universe.

Dynamics & Predictions in the Co-Event Interpretation

Sorkin has introduced a new, observer independent, interpretation of quantum mechanics that can give a successful realist account of the 'quantum microworld' as well as explaining how classicality emerges at the level of observable events for a range of systems including single time 'Copenhagen measurements'. This 'co-event interpretation' presents us with a new ontology, in which a single 'co-event' is real. A new ontology necessitates a review of the dynamical & predictive mechanism of a theory, and in this paper we begin the process by exploring means of expressing the dynamical and predictive content of histories theories in terms of co-events.

Dynamical Wave Function Collapse Models in Quantum Measure Theory

The structure of Collapse Models is investigated in the framework of Quantum Measure Theory, a histories-based approach to quantum mechanics. The underlying structure of coupled classical and quantum systems is elucidated in this approach which puts both systems on a spacetime footing. The nature of the coupling is exposed: the classical histories have no dynamics of their own but are simply tied, more or less closely, to the quantum histories.
