Optimizing quantum error correction protocols with erasure qubits

Erasure qubits offer a promising avenue toward reducing the overhead of quantum error correction (QEC) protocols. However, they require additional operations, such as erasure checks, that may add extra noise and increase runtime of QEC protocols. To assess the benefits provided by erasure qubits, we focus on the performance of the surface code as a quantum memory. In particular, we analyze various erasure check schedules, find the correctable regions in the phase space of error parameters and probe the subthreshold scaling of the logical error rate. We then consider a realization of erasure qubits in the superconducting hardware architectures via dual-rail qubits. We use the standard transmon-based implementation of the surface code as the performance benchmark. Our results indicate that QEC protocols with erasure qubits can outperform the ones with state-of-the-art transmons, even in the absence of precise information about the locations of erasure errors.

Magic State Injection with Erasure Qubits

Erasure qubits constitute a promising approach for tackling the daunting resources required for fault-tolerant quantum computing. By heralding erasure errors, both the error-correction threshold and the sub-threshold scaling of the logical error rate are significantly improved. While previous research has focused primarily on fault-tolerant quantum memories, we extend this investigation to magic state injection--a critical yet resource-intensive component of fault-tolerant quantum computation. We show that, after postselecting on erasures, the logical error rate of the injected magic state is set by the residual Pauli error, while the space-time overhead is only marginally increased as compared to non-erasure qubits with a similar noise strength. These conclusions hold both for injection into the surface code, and for injection and cultivation on the color code. For the former, we show that most of the gains can be achieved by using just three strategically placed erasure qubits in the surface code patch, independent of the patch size. For the latter, in contrast, it is beneficial to have all the qubits in the cultivation patch be erasure qubits. Our results for cultivation suggest that algorithmically relevant logical error rates may be within reach without magic state distillation for erasure rates $\lesssim 4\times 10^{-3}$ and residual Pauli error rates $\sim 10^{-4}$.

Coupled Surface Diffusion and Mean Curvature Motion: Axisymmetric Steady States with Two Grains and a Hole

The evolution of two grains, which lie on a substrate and are in contact with each other, can be roughly described by a model in which the exterior surfaces of the grains evolve by surface diffusion and the grain boundary, namely the contact surface between the adjacent grains, evolves by motion by mean curvature. We consider an axi-symmetric two grain system, contained within an inert bounding semi-infinite cylinder with a hole along the axis of symmetry. Boundary conditions are imposed reflecting the considerations of W.W. Mullins, 1958. We focus here on the steady states of this system. At steady state, the exterior surfaces have constant and equal mean curvatures, and the grain boundary has zero mean curvature; the exterior surfaces are nodoids and the grain boundary surface is a catenoid. The physical parameters in the model can be expressed via two angles $β$ and $θ_c$, which depend on the surface free energies. Typically if a steady state solution exists for given values of $(β, θ_c)$, then there exists a continuum of such solutions. In particular, we prove that there exists a continuum of solutions with $θ_c=π$ for any $β\in (π/2, π)$.

On the robustness of the NV-NMR spectrometer setup to magnetic field inhomogeneities

The NV-NMR spectrometer is a promising candidate for detection of NMR signals at the nano scale. Field inhomogeneities, however, are a major source of noise that limits spectral resolution in state of the art NV - NMR experiments and constitutes a major bottleneck in the development of nano scale NMR. Here we propose, a route in which this limitation could be circumvented in NV-NMR spectrometer experiments, by utilising the nanometric scale and the quantumness of the detector.
