On the Optimality of Decode and Forward for Some Cooperative Broadcast Channels

This article characterizes new boundary points on the capacity region of certain classes of more capable broadcast channels (BC) with uni-directional cooperation from the stronger to the weaker receiver. The new boundary points are achieved by a simple coding scheme that employs superposition coding at the transmitter with decode and forward at the stronger receiver. We evaluate our general result for Gaussian BCs and for a BC consisting of a binary erasure channel (BEC) to the stronger receiver and a binary symmetric channel (BSC) to the weaker receiver.

The Arbitrarily Varying Channel with Colored Gaussian Noise

We address the arbitrarily varying channel (AVC) with colored Gaussian noise. The work consists of three parts. First, we study the general discrete AVC with fixed parameters, where the channel depends on two state sequences, one arbitrary and the other fixed and known. This model can be viewed as a combination of the AVC and the time-varying channel. We determine both the deterministic code capacity and the random code capacity. Super-additivity is demonstrated, showing that the deterministic code capacity can be strictly larger than the weighted sum of the parametric capacities. In the second part, we consider the arbitrarily varying Gaussian product channel (AVGPC). Hughes and Narayan characterized the random code capacity through min-max optimization leading to a "double" water filling solution. Here, we establish the deterministic code capacity and also discuss the game-theoretic meaning and the connection between double water filling and Nash equilibrium. As in the case of the standard Gaussian AVC, the deterministic code capacity is discontinuous in the input constraint, and depends on which of the input or state constraint is higher. As opposed to Shannon's classic water filling solution, it is observed that deterministic coding using independent scalar codes is suboptimal for the AVGPC. Finally, we establish the capacity of the AVC with colored Gaussian noise, where double water filling is performed in the frequency domain. The analysis relies on our preceding results, on the AVC with fixed parameters and the AVGPC.

The Capacity Region of the Arbitrarily Varying MAC: With and Without Constraints

We determine both the random code capacity region and the deterministic code capacity region of the arbitrarily varying multiple access channel (AVMAC) under input and state constraints. As in the single user case, the boundary of the deterministic code capacity region is a discontinuous function of the input constraint. For the AVMAC without constraints, the characterization due to Ahlswede and Cai is complete except for two cases, pointed out in the literature as an open problem. The missing piece is obtained as a special case of our results.

MIMO MAC-BC Duality with Linear-Feedback Coding Schemes

We show that for the multi-antenna Gaussian multi-access channel (MAC) and broadcast channel (BC) with perfect feedback, the rate regions achieved by linear-feedback coding schemes (called linear-feedback capacity regions) coincide when the same total input-power constraint is imposed on both channels and when the MAC channel matrices are the transposes of the BC channel matrices. Such a pair of MAC and BC is called dual. We also identify sub-classes of linear-feedback coding schemes that achieve the linear-feedback capacity regions of these two channels and present multi-letter expressions for the linear-feedback capacity regions. Moreover, within the two sub-classes of coding schemes that achieve the linear-feedback capacity regions for a given MAC and its dual BC, we identify for each MAC scheme a BC scheme and for each BC scheme a MAC scheme so that the two schemes have same total input power and achieve the same rate regions.

On State Dependent Broadcast Channels with Cooperation

In this paper, we investigate problems of communication over physically degraded, state-dependent broadcast channels (BCs) with cooperating decoders. Two different setups are considered and their capacity regions are characterized. First, we study a setting in which one decoder can use a finite capacity link to send the other decoder information regarding the messages or the channel states. In this scenario we analyze two cases: one where noncausal state information is available to the encoder and the strong decoder and the other where state information is available only to the encoder in a causal manner. Second, we examine a setting in which the cooperation between the decoders is limited to taking place before the outputs of the channel are given. In this case, one decoder, which is informed of the state sequence noncausally, can cooperate only to send the other decoder rate-limited information about the state sequence. The proofs of the capacity regions introduce a new method of coding for channels with cooperation between different users, where we exploit the link between the decoders for multiple-binning. Finally, we discuss the optimality of using rate splitting techniques when coding for cooperative BCs. In particular, we show that rate splitting is not necessarily optimal when coding for cooperative BCs by solving an example in which our method of coding outperforms rate splitting.

Coding Schemes and Asymptotic Capacity of the Gaussian Broadcast and Interference Channels with Feedback

A coding scheme is proposed for the memoryless Gaussian broadcast channel with correlated noises and feedback. For all noise correlations other than -1, the gap between the sum-rate the scheme achieves and the full-cooperation bound vanishes as the signal-to-noise ratio tends to infinity. When the correlation coefficient is -1, the gains afforded by feedback are unbounded and the prelog is doubled. When the correlation coefficient is +1 we demonstrate a dichotomy: If the noise variances are equal, then feedback is useless, and otherwise, feedback affords unbounded rate gains and doubles the prelog. The unbounded feedback gains, however, require perfect (noiseless) feedback. When the feedback links are noisy the feedback gains are bounded, unless the feedback noise decays to zero sufficiently fast with the signal-to-noise ratio. Extensions to more receivers are also discussed as is the memoryless Gaussian interference channel with feedback.

A Note on Multiple-Access Channels with Strictly-Causal State Information

We propose a new inner bound on the capacity region of a memoryless multiple-access channel that is governed by a memoryless state that is known strictly causally to the encoders. The new inner bound contains the previous bounds, and we provide an example demonstrating that the inclusion can be strict. A variation on this example is then applied to the case where the channel is governed by two independent state sequences, where each transmitter knows one of the states strictly causally. The example proves that, as conjectured by Li et al., an inner bound that they derived for this scenario can indeed by strictly better than previous bounds.
