Deuterium permeation in Er$_2$O$_3$ thin film fabricated on a type 316L stainless steel substrate

A metal-oxide film can be used as a hydrogen-isotope permeation barrier in the fuel circulation system for nuclear fusion. We fabricated Er$_2$O$_3$ thin film on a type 316L stainless-steel substrate by using a metal-organic chemical vapor deposition technique for the purpose of hydrogen-isotope permeation barrier. Electron microscopy based imaging and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy measurements indicate a sound film quality together with X-ray diffraction experiments. We also measured deuterium permeation in the film at high temperatures ranging from 600 $^{\circ}$C to 800 $^{\circ}$C. The permeation reduction was most apparent at 650 $^{\circ}$C. Above 800 $^{\circ}$C, we confirmed that the film was damaged and did not work as a permeation barrier.

Temperature dependence of the Stark shifts of Er$^{3+}$ transitions in Er$_2$O$_3$ thin film on Si (001)

Optical transitions of an Er$_2$O$_3$ film on a Si substrate grown by using a metal-organic chemical vapor deposition technique were investigated in a wide temperature (300 K $\sim$ 5 K) and spectral (500 nm and 850 nm) ranges. Numerous sharp transitions corresponding to the Er$^{3+}$ ionic levels were observed, which show Stark shifts induced by the crystal field. With decreasing temperature from 300 K to 5 K, all transition peaks exhibit spectral red-shift. We believe that such red-shift behavior is due to the change of the crystal field together with the change of strain field induced by the film and the substrate in varying temperature. An interesting result is the total amount of red-shifts between 300 K and 5 K. We obtain that the higher transition energy peaks show bigger red-shifts. This is very consistent to all transition peaks. This is because the dipole moments between the transition levels are different that lead to different amounts of Stark shifts.

SDMS-based Disk Encryption Method

We propose a disk encryption method, called secure disk mixed system (SDMS) in this paper, for data protection of disk storages such as USB flash memory, USB hard disk and CD/DVD. It is aimed to solve temporal and spatial limitation problems of existing disk encryption methods and to control security performance flexibly according to the security requirement of system. SDMS stores data by encrypting with different encryption key per sector and updates sector encryption keys each time data is written. Security performance of SDMS is analyzed at the end of the paper.

Specific heat study of Ga1-xMnxAs

Specific heat measurements were used to study the magnetic phase transition in Ga1-xMnxAs. Two different types of Ga1-xMnxAs samples have been investigated. The sample with a Mn concentration of 1.6% shows insulating behavior, and the sample with a Mn concentration of 2.6% is metallic. The temperature dependence of the specific heat for both samples reveals a pronounced lambda-shaped peak near the Curie temperature, which indicates a second-order phase transition in these samples. The critical behavior of the specific heat for Ga1-xMnxAs samples is consistent with the mean-field behavior with Gaussian fluctuations of the magnetization in the close vicinity of TC.
