Probing topological relation between high density and low density region of 2MASS with hexagon cells

We introduce a new 2-D hexagon technique to probe the topological structure of the universe, in which we map regions of the sky with high and low galaxy densities onto a 2-D lattice of hexagon unit cells, We define filled cells as corresponding to high density regions and empty cells as corresponding to low density region. The number of filled cells and empty cells are kept same by controlling the size of the cells. By analyzing the six neighbors of each hexagon we can get and compare statistical topological properties of the high density and low density regions in the universe, in order to have a better understanding of the evolution of the universe. We apply this hexagon method on 2MASS data and discover significant topological differences between the high density and low density regions. Both regions have significant (>5 Sigma) topological shifts from the binomial distribution or the random distribution.

Nearest neighbor vector analysis of sdss dr5 galaxy distribution

We present the Nearest Neighbor Distance (NND) analysis of SDSS DR5 galaxies. We give NND results for observed, mock and random sample, and discuss the differences. We find that the observed sample gives us a significantly stronger aggregation characteristic than the random samples. Moreover, we investigate the direction of NND and find that the direction has close relation with the size of the NND for the observed sample.

Three-Dimensional Filamentation Analysis of SDSS DR5 Survey

We introduce a new method to calculate the multi-scale 3D filamentation of SDSS DR5 galaxy clusters and also applied it to N-body simulations. We compared the filamentation of the observed vs. mock samples in metric space on scales from 8 Mpc to 30 Mpc. Mock samples are closer to the observed sample than random samples, and one of the mock samples behaves better than another one. We also find that the observed sample has a large filamentation value at a scale of 10 Mpc, which is not found from either mock samples or random samples. Key words: filamentation, metric space, galaxy clusters, SDSS DR5.

Rhombic cell analysis II. Application to the IRAS/PSCz Catalogue

Rhombic cell analysis as outlined in the first paper of the present series is applied to samples of varying depths and liming luminosities of the IRAS/PSCz Catalogue. Numerical indices are introduced to summarize essential information. Because of the discrete nature of the anlaysis and of the space distribution of galaxies, the indices for a given sample must be regarded as each having an irreducible scatter. Despite the scatter, the mean indices show remarkable variations across the samples. The underlying factor for the variations is shown to be the limiting luminosity rather than the sampling depth. As samples of more and more luminous galaxies are considered over a range of some 2 magnitudes (a factor of some 50 in space density), the morpholgy of the filled and empty regions the galaxies define degrades steadily towards insignificance, and the degrading is faster for the filled than the empty region.
