Bogomol'nyi Equations in Two-Species Born--Infeld Theories Governing Vortices and Antivortices

We derive several new Bogomol'nyi (self-dual) equations in two-species $U(1)\times U(1)$ gauge theories governed by the Born--Infeld nonlinear electrodynamics. By identifying appropriate Born--Infeld type Higgs potentials, we show that the highly nonlinear energy functionals admit exact topological lower bounds saturated by coupled first-order equations. The resulting models accommodate both vortex-vortex and vortex-antivortex configurations and generalize previously known single-species Born--Infeld systems to interacting multi-component settings. Beyond the derivation of the Bogomol'nyi equations, we develop an exact thermodynamic theory for pinned multivortex configurations in both the full plane and compact doubly periodic domains. Owing to the linear dependence of the Bogomol'nyi energy spectrum on topological charges, we obtain closed-form expressions for the canonical partition function, internal energy, heat capacity, and magnetization. In compact domains, the Bradlow type geometric bounds constrain admissible vortex numbers and lead to qualitatively new high-temperature behavior. In particular, vortex-only systems exhibit spontaneous magnetization, while vortex-antivortex systems do not, reflecting the underlying symmetry between opposite topological charges. These results provide a rare analytically solvable framework for studying thermodynamics in nonlinear multi-component gauge theories regulated by the Born--Infeld electrodynamics.

Dyonically Charged Black Holes Arising in Generalized Born--Infeld Theory of Electromagnetism

Black hole solutions to the Einstein equations coupled with the Born--Infeld electromagnetism associated with generalized nonlinear electrodynamics, carrying both electric and magnetic charges, often referred to as dyonically charged black holes, of finite energies, are constructed. These solutions give rise to relegated curvature singularities at the center of the matter sources of the black holes and approach the classical Reissner--Nordstrom black hole asymptotically.

Determination of Bending Angle of Light Deflection Subject to Possible Weak and Strong Quantum Gravity Effects

Explicit expressions for the bending angle of light deflection arising from phenomenologically deformed black-hole metrics, subject to possible weak and strong quantum gravity effects, respectively, are obtained, by a highly effective method. The accuracy and effectiveness of these expressions are then illustrated by numerically solving the differential equation governing the deflection angle directly in the weak quantum effect situation.

Dilaton Mass Formulas in a Hairy Binary Black Hole Model

In this note an analytic integration is obtained for the differential equation governing the scalar-field-dependent mass in a hairy binary black hole model, in the context of the Einstein--Maxwell--dilation theory, which gives a closed-form formula-level description of the mass function. We also identify a particular solution which attracts all solutions of the mass-governing equation exponentially rapidly in large-dilaton-field limit.

Coexisting Vortices and Antivortices Generated by Dually Gauged Harmonic Maps

In this paper we first formulate a dually gauged harmonic map model, suggested from a product Abelian Higgs field theory arising in impurity-inspired field theories, and obtain a new BPS system of equations governing coexisting vortices and antivortices, which are topologically characterized by the first Chern class of the underlying Hermitian bundle and the Thom class of the associated dual bundle. We then establish existence and uniqueness theorems for such vortices. For the equations over a compact surface, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of solutions. For the equations over the full plane, we obtain all finite-energy solutions. Besides, we also present precise expressions giving the values of various physical quantities of the solutions, including magnetic charges and energies, in terms of the total numbers of vortices and antivortices, of two species, and the coupling parameters involved.

Non-Abelian clouds around Reissner-Nordström black holes: the existence line

A known feature of electrically charged Reissner-Nordström-anti-de Sitter planar black holes is that they can become unstable when considered as solutions of Einstein--Yang-Mills theory. The mechanism for this is that the linearized Yang-Mills equations in the background of the Reissner-Nordström (RN) black holes possess a normalizable zero mode, resulting in non-Abelian (nA) magnetic clouds near the horizon. In this work we show that the same pattern may occur also for asymptotically flat RN black holes. Different from the anti-de Sitter case, in the Minkowskian background the prerequisite for the existence of the nA clouds is $i)$ a large enough gauge group and $ii)$ the presence of some extra interaction terms in the matter Lagrangian. To illustrate this mechanism we present two specific examples, one in four and the other in five dimensional asymptotically flat spacetime. In the first case, we augment the usual $SU(3)$ Yang-Mills Lagrangian with higher order (quartic) curvature term, while for the second one we add the Chern-Simons density to the $SO(6)$ Yang-Mills system. In both cases, an Abelian gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken near a RN black hole horizon with the appearance of a condensate of nA gauge fields. In addition to these two examples, we review the corresponding picture for anti-de Sitter black holes. All these solutions are studied both analytically and numerically, existence proofs being provided for nA clouds in the background of RN black holes. The proofs use shooting techniques which are suggested by and in turn offer insights for our numerical methods. They indicate that, for a black hole of given mass, appropriate electric charge values are required to ensure the existence of solutions interpolating desired boundary behavior at the horizons and spatial infinity.

Explicit Integration of Friedmann's Equation with Nonlinear Equations of State

This paper is a continuation of our earlier study on the integrability of the Friedmann equations in the light of the Chebyshev theorem. Our main focus will be on a series of important, yet not previously touched, problems when the equation of state for the perfect-fluid universe is nonlinear. These include the generalized Chaplygin gas, two-term energy density, trinomial Friedmann, Born--Infeld, and two-fluid models. We show that some of these may be integrated using Chebyshev's result while other are out of reach by the theorem but may be integrated explicitly by other methods. With the explicit integration, we are able to understand exactly the roles of the physical parameters in various models play in the cosmological evolution. For example, in the Chaplygin gas universe, it is seen that, as far as there is a tiny presence of nonlinear matter, linear matter makes contribution to the dark matter, which becomes significant near the phantom divide line. The Friedmann equations also arise in areas of physics not directly related to cosmology. We provide some examples ranging from geometric optics and central orbits to soap films and the shape of glaciated valleys to which our results may be applied.

Friedmann-Lemaitre Cosmologies via Roulettes and Other Analytic Methods

In this work a series of methods are developed for understanding the Friedmann equation when it is beyond the reach of the Chebyshev theorem. First it will be demonstrated that every solution of the Friedmann equation admits a representation as a roulette such that information on the latter may be used to obtain that for the former. Next the Friedmann equation is integrated for a quadratic equation of state and for the Randall--Sundrum II universe, leading to a harvest of a rich collection of new interesting phenomena. Finally an analytic method is used to isolate the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of the Friedmann equation, when the equation of state is of an extended form which renders the integration impossible, and to establish a universal exponential growth law.

Topologically Stratified Energy Minimizers in a Product Abelian Field Theory

We study a recently developed product Abelian gauge field theory by Tong and Wong hosting magnetic impurities. We first obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a unique solution realizing such impurities in the form of multiple vortices. We next reformulate the theory into an extended model that allows the coexistence of vortices and anti-vortices. The two Abelian gauge fields in the model induce two species of magnetic vortex-lines resulting from $N_s$ vortices and $P_s$ anti-vortices ($s=1,2$) realized as the zeros and poles of two complex-valued Higgs fields, respectively. An existence theorem is established for the governing equations over a compact Riemann surface $S$ which states that a solution with prescribed $N_1, N_2$ vortices and $P_1,P_2$ anti-vortices of two designated species exists if and only if the inequalities \[ \left|N_1+N_2-(P_1+P_2)\right|<\frac{|S|}π,\quad \left|N_1+2N_2-(P_1+2P_2)\right|<\frac{|S|}π, \] hold simultaneously, which give bounds for the `differences' of the vortex and anti-vortex numbers in terms of the total surface area of $S$. The minimum energy of these solutions is shown to assume the explicit value \[ E= 4π(N_1+N_2+P_1+P_2), \] given in terms of several topological invariants, measuring the total tension of the vortex-lines.

Exact Kink Solitons in Skyrme Crystals

We present an explicit integration of the kink soliton equation obtained in a recent interesting study of the classical Skyrme model where the field configurations are of a generalized hedgehog form which is of a domain-wall type. We also show that in such a reduced one-dimensional setting the first-order and second-order equations are equivalent. Consequently, in such a context, all finite-energy solitons are BPS type and precisely known.

Friedmann's Equations in All Dimensions and Chebyshev's Theorem

This short but systematic work demonstrates a link between Chebyshev's theorem and the explicit integration in cosmological time $t$ and conformal time $η$ of the Friedmann equations in all dimensions and with an arbitrary cosmological constant $Λ$. More precisely, it is shown that for spatially flat universes an explicit integration in $t$ may always be carried out, and that, in the non-flat situation and when $Λ$ is zero and the ratio $w$ of the pressure and energy density in the barotropic equation of state of the perfect-fluid universe is rational, an explicit integration may be carried out if and only if the dimension $n$ of space and $w$ obey some specific relations among an infinite family. The situation for explicit integration in $η$ is complementary to that in $t$. More precisely, it is shown in the flat-universe case with $Λ\neq0$ that an explicit integration in $η$ can be carried out if and only if $w$ and $n$ obey similar relations among a well-defined family which we specify, and that, when $Λ=0$, an explicit integration can always be carried out whether the space is flat, closed, or open. We also show that our method may be used to study more realistic cosmological situations when the equation of state is nonlinear.

Abelian Hopfions of the CP^n model on R^{2n+1} and a fractionally powered topological lower bound

Regarding the Skyrme-Faddeev model on $\mathbb R^3$ as a $\mathbb C \mathbb P^1$ sigma model, we propose $\mathbb C \mathbb P^n$ sigma models on $\mathbb R^{2n+1}$ as generalisations which may support finite energy Hopfion solutions in these dimensions. The topological charge stabilising these field configurations is the Chern-Simons charge, namely the volume integral of the Chern-Simons density which has a local expression in terms of the composite connection and curvature of the CP^n field. It turns out that subject to the sigma model constraint, this density is a total divergence. We prove the existence of a topological lower bound on the energy, which, as in the Vakulenko-Kapitansky case in R^3, is a fractional power of the topological charge, depending on $n$. The numerical construction of the simplest ring shaped un-knot Hopfion on R^5 is also discussed.

Chern--Simons Vortices in the Gudnason Model

We present a series of existence theorems for multiple vortex solutions in the Gudnason model of the ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric field theory where non-Abelian gauge fields are governed by the pure Chern--Simons dynamics at dual levels and realized as the solutions of a system of elliptic equations with exponential nonlinearity over two-dimensional domains. In the full plane situation, our method utilizes a minimization approach, and in the doubly periodic situation, we employ an-inequality constrained minimization approach. In the latter case, we also obtain sufficient conditions under which we show that there exist at least two gauge-distinct solutions for any prescribed distribution of vortices. In other words, there are distinct solutions with identical vortex distribution, energy, and electric and magnetic charges.

Dynamics of Electrostatic MEMS Actuators

Electrostatic actuators are simple but important switching devices for MEMS applications. Due to the difficulties associated with the electrostatic nonlinearity, precise mathematical description is often hard to obtain for the dynamics of these actuators. Here we present two sharp theorems concerning the dynamics of an undamped electrostatic actuator with one-degree of freedom, subject to linear and nonlinear elastic forces, respectively. We prove that both situations are characterized by the onset of one-stagnation-point periodic response below a well-defined pull-in voltage and a finite-time touch-down or collapse of the actuator above this pull-in voltage. In the linear-force situation, the stagnation level, pull-in voltage, and pull-in coordinate of the movable electrode may all be determined explicitly, following the recent work of Leus and Elata based on numerics. Furthermore, in the nonlinear-force situation, the stagnation level, pull-in voltage, and pull-in coordinate may be described completely in terms of the electrostatic and mechanical parameters of the model so that they approach those in the linear-force situation monotonically in the zero nonlinear-force limit.

Existence of Multiple Vortices in Supersymmetric Gauge Field Theory

Two sharp existence and uniqueness theorems are presented for solutions of multiple vortices arising in a six-dimensional brane-world supersymmetric gauge field theory under the general gauge symmetry group $G=U(1)\times SU(N)$ and with $N$ Higgs scalar fields in the fundamental representation of $G$. Specifically, when the space of extra dimension is compact so that vortices are hosted in a 2-torus of volume $|\Om|$, the existence of a unique multiple vortex solution representing $n_1,...,n_N$ respectively prescribed vortices arising in the $N$ species of the Higgs fields is established under the explicitly stated necessary and sufficient condition \[ n_i<\frac{g^2v^2}{8πN}|\Om|+\frac{1}{N}(1-\frac{1}{N}[\frac{g}{e}]^2)n,\quad i=1,...,N,] where $e$ and $g$ are the U(1) electromagnetic and SU(N) chromatic coupling constants, $v$ measures the energy scale of broken symmetry, and $n=\sum_{i=1}^N n_i$ is the total vortex number; when the space of extra dimension is the full plane, the existence and uniqueness of an arbitrarily prescribed $n$-vortex solution of finite energy is always ensured. These vortices are governed by a system of nonlinear elliptic equations, which may be reformulated to allow a variational structure. Proofs of existence are then developed using the methods of calculus of variations.

Existence of Optical Vortices

Optical vortices arise as phase singularities of the light fields and are of central interest in modern optical physics. In this paper, some existence theorems are established for stationary vortex wave solutions of a general class of nonlinear Schrödinger equations. There are two types of results. The first type concerns the existence of positive-radial-profile solutions which are obtained through a constrained minimization approach. The second type addresses the existence of saddle-point solutions through a mountain-pass-theorem or min-max method so that the wave propagation constant may be arbitrarily prescribed in an open interval. Furthermore some explicit estimates for the lower bound and sign of the wave propagation constant with respect to the light beam power and vortex winding number are also derived for the first type solutions.

Existence Theorems for Vortices in the Aharony--Bergman--Jaferis--Maldacena Model

A series of sharp existence and uniqueness theorems are established for the multiple vortex solutions in the supersymmetric Chern--Simons--Higgs theory formalism of Aharony, Bergman, Jaferis, and Maldacena, for which the Higgs bosons and Dirac fermions lie in the bifundamental representation of the general gauge symmetry group $U(N)\times U(N)$. The governing equations are of the BPS type and derived by Kim, Kim, Kwon, and Nakajima in the mass-deformed framework labeled by a continuous parameter.

Solutions to the Master Equations Governing Fractional Vortices

By means of variational methods, in this paper, we establish sharp existence results for solutions of the master equations governing `fractional multiple vortices.' In the doubly periodic situation, the conditions for existence are both necessary and sufficient and give the upper bounds for the vortex numbers in terms of the size of the periodic cell domain. In the planar situation, there is no restriction on the vortex numbers. In both situations, the solutions are uniquely determined by the prescribed locations and the local winding numbers of the vortices.

Existence of Dyons in Minimally Gauged Skyrme Model via Constrained Minimization

We prove the existence of electrically and magnetically charged particlelike static solutions, known as dyons, in the minimally gauged Skyrme model developed by Brihaye, Hartmann, and Tchrakian. The solutions are spherically symmetric, depend on two continuous parameters, and carry unit monopole and magnetic charges but continuous Skyrme charge and non-quantized electric charge induced from the 't Hooft electromagnetism. The problem amounts to obtaining a finite-energy critical point of an indefinite action functional, arising from the presence of electricity and the Minkowski spacetime signature. The difficulty with the absence of the Higgs field is overcome by achieving suitable strong convergence and obtaining uniform decay estimates at singular boundary points so that the negative sector of the action functional becomes tractable.

Non-Abelian Vortices in Supersymmetric Gauge Field Theory via Direct Methods

Vortices in supersymmetric gauge field theory are important constructs in a basic conceptual phenomenon commonly referred to as the dual Meissner effect which is responsible for color confinement. Based on a direct minimization approach, we present a series of sharp existence and uniqueness theorems for the solutions of some non-Abelian vortex equations governing color-charged multiply distributed flux tubes, which provide an essential mechanism for linear confinement. Over a doubly periodic domain, existence results are obtained under explicitly stated necessary and sufficient conditions that relate the size of the domain, the vortex numbers, and the underlying physical coupling parameters of the models. Over the full plane, existence results are valid for arbitrary vortex numbers and coupling parameters. In all cases, solutions are unique.

Charged cosmological dust solutions of the coupled Einstein and Maxwell equations

It is well known through the work of Majumdar, Papapetrou, Hartle, and Hawking that the coupled Einstein and Maxwell equations admit a static multiple blackhole solution representing a balanced equilibrium state of finitely many point charges. This is a result of the exact cancellation of gravitational attraction and electric repulsion under an explicit condition on the mass and charge ratio. The resulting system of particles, known as an extremely charged dust, gives rise to examples of spacetimes with naked singularities. In this paper, we consider the continuous limit of the Majumdar--Papapetrou--Hartle--Hawking solution modeling a space occupied by an extended distribution of extremely charged dust. We show that for a given smooth distribution of matter of finite ADM mass there is a continuous family of smooth solutions realizing asymptotically flat space metrics.

Moduli Space of BPS Walls in Supersymmetric Gauge Theories

Existence and uniqueness of the solution are proved for the `master equation' derived from the BPS equation for the vector multiplet scalar in the U(1) gauge theory with Nf charged matter hypermultiplets with eight supercharges. This proof finally establishes the fact that the moduli space of the BPS domain wall solution is CP^(N_f-1) for the gauge theory at finite gauge couplings. Therefore the moduli space at finite gauge couplings is topologically the same manifold as that at infinite gauge coupling, where the gauged linear sigma model reduces to a nonlinear sigma model. The proof is extended to the U(Nc) gauge theory with Nf hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation, provided the moduli matrix of the domain wall solution is U(1)-factorizable. Thus the dimension of the moduli space of U(Nc) gauge theory is bounded from below by the dimension of the U(1)-factorizable part of the moduli space. We also obtain sharp estimates of the asymptotic exponential decay which depend on both the gauge coupling and the hypermultiplet mass differences.
