Tunable quantum interference effects in Floquet two- and three-level systems

Quantum interference effects in the unmodulated quantum systems with light-matter interaction have been widely studied, such as electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and Autler-Townes splitting (ATS). However, the similar quantum interference effects in the Floquet systems (i.e., periodically modulated systems), which might cover rich new physics, were rarely studied. In this article, we investigate the quantum interference effects in the Floquet two- and three-level systems analytically and numerically. We show a coherent destruction tunneling effect in a lotuslike multipeak spectrum with a Floquet two-level system, where the intensity of the probe field is periodically modulated with a square-wave sequence. We demonstrate that the multipeak split into multiple transparency windows with tunable quantum interference if the Floquet system is asynchronously controlled via a third level. Based on phenomenological analysis with Akaike information criterion, we show that the symmetric central transparency window has a similar mechanism to the traditional ATS or EIT depending on the choice of parameters, additional with an extra degree of freedom to control the quantum interference provided by the modulation period. The other transparent windows are shown to be asymmetric, different from the traditional ATS and EIT windows. These nontrivial quantum interference effects open up a scope to explore the applications of the Floquet systems.

An analytical double-unitary-transformation approach for strongly and periodically driven three-level systems

Floquet theory combined with the generalized Van Vleck nearly degenerate perturbation theory, has been widely employed for studying various two-level systems that are driven by external fields via the time-dependent longitudinal (i.e., diagonal) couplings. However, three-level systems strongly driven by the time-dependent transverse (i.e., off-diagonal) couplings have rarely been investigated, due to the breakdown of the traditional rotating wave approximation. Meanwhile, the conventional perturbation theory is not directly applicable, since a small parameter for the perturbed part is no longer apparent. Here we develop a double-unitary-transformation approach to deal with the periodically modulated and strongly driven systems, where the time-dependent Hamiltonian has large off-diagonal elements. The first unitary transformation converts the strong off-diagonal elements to the diagonal ones, and the second enables us to harness the generalized Van Vleck perturbation theory to deal with the transformed Floquet matrix and also allows us to reduce the infinite-dimensional Floquet Hamiltonian to a finite effective one. For a strongly modulated three-level system, with the combination of the Floquet theory and the transformed generalized Van Vleck perturbation theory, we obtain analytical results of the system, which agree well with exact numerical solutions. This method offers a useful tool to analytically study the multi-level systems with strong transverse couplings.

Stabilization of Itô Stochastic T-S Models via Line Integral and Novel Estimate for Hessian Matrices

This paper proposes a line integral Lyapunov function approach to stability analysis and stabilization for Itô stochastic T-S models. Unlike the deterministic case, stability analysis of this model needs the information of Hessian matrix of the line integral Lyapunov function which is related to partial derivatives of the basis functions. By introducing a new method to handle these partial derivatives and using the property of state-dependent matrix with rank one, the stability conditions of the underlying system can be established via a line integral Lyapunov function. These conditions obtained are more general than the ones which are based on quadratic Lyapunov functions. Based on the stability conditions, a controller is developed by cone complementarity linerization algorithm. A non-quadratic Lyapunov function approach is thus proposed for the stabilization problem of the Itô stochastic T-S models. It has been shown that the problem can be solved by optimizing sum of traces for a group of products of matrix variables with linear constraints. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

Periodically modulated electromagnetically induced transparency

Phenomena of electromagnetically induced transparency (PEIT) may be interpreted by the Autler-Townes Splitting (ATS), where the coupled states are split by the coupling laser field, or by the quantum destructive interference (QDI), where the atomic phases caused by the coupling laser and the probe laser field cancel. We propose modulated experiments to explore the PEIT in an alternative way by periodically modulating the coupling and the probe fields in a ?-type three-level system. Our analytical and numerical results rule out the ATS interpretation and show that the QDI interpretation is more appropriate for the modulated experiments. The proposed experiments are readily implemented in atomic gases, artificial atoms in superconducting quantum devices, or three-level meta-atoms in meta-materials.

Preserving coherent spin and squeezed spin states of a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate with rotary echoes

A challenge in precision measurement with squeezed spin state arises from the spin dephasing due to stray magnetic fields. To suppress such environmental noises, we employ a continuous driving protocol, rotary echo, to enhance the spin coherence of a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate in stray magnetic fields. Our analytical and numerical results show that the coherent and the squeezed spin states are preserved for a significantly long time, compared to the free induction decay time, if the condition $hτ= mπ$ is met with $h$ the pulse amplitude and $τ$ pulse width. In particular, both the spin average and the spin squeezing, including the direction and the amplitude, are simultaneously fixed for a squeezed spin state. Our results point out a practical way to implement quantum measurements based on a spin-1 condensate beyond the standard quantum limit.
