Optical Observations of the Nearby Type Ia Supernova 2021hpr

We present the optical photometric and spectroscopic observations of the nearby Type Ia supernova (SN) 2021hpr. The observations covered the phase of $-$14.37 to +63.68 days relative to its maximum luminosity in the $B$ band. The evolution of multiband light/color curves of SN 2021hpr is similar to that of normal Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) with the exception of some phases, especially a plateau phase that appeared in the $V-R$ color curve before peak luminosity, which resembles that of SN 2017cbv. The first spectrum we observed at t $\sim -$14.4 days shows a higher velocity for the Si II $λ$6355 feature ($\sim$ 21,000 km s$^{-1}$) than that of other normal Velocity (NV) SNe Ia at the same phase. Based on the Si II $λ$6355 velocity of $\sim$ 12,420 km s$^{-1}$ around the maximum light, we deduce that SN 2021hpr is a transitional object between high velocity (HV) and NV SNe Ia. Meanwhile, the Si II $λ$6355 feature shows a high velocity gradient (HVG) of about 800 km s$^{-1}$ day$^{-1}$ from roughly $-$14.37 to $-$4.31 days relative to the $B$-band maximum, which indicates that SN 2021hpr can also be classified as an HVG SN Ia. The evolution of SN 2021hpr is similar to that of SN 2011fe. Including SN 2021hpr, there have been six supernovae observed in the host galaxy NGC 3147, and the supernovae explosion rate in the last 50 yr is slightly higher for SNe Ia, while lower for SNe Ibc and SNe II it is lower than expected rate from the radio data. Inspecting the spectra, we find that SN 2021hpr has a metal-rich (12 + log(O/H) $\approx$ 8.648) circumstellar environment, where HV SNe tend to reside. Based on the decline rate of SN 2021hpr in the $B$ band, we determine the distance modulus of the host galaxy NGC 3147 using the Phillips relation to be 33.46 $\pm$ 0.21 mag, which is close to that found by previous works.

Early Optical Observations of GRB 150910A: Bright Jet Optical Afterglow and X-ray Dipole Radiation from a Magnetar Central Engine

Gamma-ray burst (GRB) 150910A was detected by {\it Swift}/BAT, and then rapidly observed by {\it Swift}/XRT, {\it Swift}/UVOT, and ground-based telescopes. We report Lick Observatory spectroscopic and photometric observations of GRB~150910A, and we investigate the physical origins of both the optical and X-ray afterglows, incorporating data obtained with BAT and XRT. The light curves show that the jet emission episode lasts $\sim 360$~s with a sharp pulse from BAT to XRT (Episode I). In Episode II, the optical emission has a smooth onset bump followed by a normal decay ($α_{\rm R,2} \approx -1.36$), as predicted in the standard external shock model, while the X-ray emission exhibits a plateau ($α_{\rm X,1} \approx -0.36$) followed by a steep decay ($α_{\rm X,2} \approx -2.12$). The light curves show obvious chromatic behavior with an excess in the X-ray flux. Our results suggest that GRB 150910A is an unusual GRB driven by a newly-born magnetar with its extremely energetic magnetic dipole (MD) wind in Episode II, which overwhelmingly dominates the observed early X-ray plateau. The radiative efficiency of the jet prompt emission is $η_γ \approx 11\%$. The MD wind emission was detected in both the BAT and XRT bands, making it the brightest among the current sample of MD winds seen by XRT. We infer the initial spin period ($P_0$) and the surface polar cap magnetic field strength ($B_p$) of the magnetar as $1.02 \times 10^{15}~{\rm G} \leq B_{p} \leq 1.80 \times 10^{15}~{\rm G}$ and 1~ms $\leq P_{0}v\leq 1.77$~ms, and the radiative efficiency of the wind is $η_w \geq 32\%$.

The Xinglong 2.16-m Telescope: Current Instruments and Scientific Projects

The Xinglong 2.16-m reflector is the first 2-meter class astronomical telescope in China. It was jointly designed and built by the Nanjing Astronomical Instruments Factory (NAIF), Beijing Astronomical Observatory (now National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences, NAOC) and Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1989. It is Ritchey-Chrétien (R-C) reflector on an English equatorial mount and the effective aperture is 2.16 meters. It had been the largest optical telescope in China for $\sim18$ years until the Guoshoujing Telescope (also called Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope, LAMOST) and the Lijiang 2.4-m telescope were built. At present, there are three main instruments on the Cassegrain focus available: the Beijing Faint Object Spectrograph and Camera (BFOSC) for direct imaging and low resolution ($R\sim500-2000$) spectroscopy, the spectrograph made by Optomechanics Research Inc. (OMR) for low resolution spectroscopy (the spectral resolutions are similar to those of BFOSC) and the fiber-fed High Resolution Spectrograph (HRS, $R\sim30000-65000$). The telescope is widely open to astronomers all over China as well as international astronomical observers. Each year there are more than 40 ongoing observing projects, including 6-8 key projects. Recently, some new techniques and instruments (e.g., astro-frequency comb calibration system, polarimeter and adaptive optics) have been or will be tested on the telescope to extend its observing abilities.

Low Surface Brightness Galaxies selected from the 40% sky area of the ALFALFA HI survey.I.Sample and statistical properties

The population of Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxies is crucial for understanding the extremes of galaxy formation and evolution of the universe. As LSB galaxies are mostly rich in gas (HI), the alpha.40-SDSS DR7 sample is absolutely one of the best survey combinations to select a sample of them in the local Universe. Since the sky backgrounds are systematically overestimated for galaxy images by the SDSS photometric pipeline, particularly for luminous galaxies or galaxies with extended low surface brightness outskirts, in this paper, we above all estimated the sky backgrounds of SDSS images in the alpha.40-SDSS DR7 sample, using a precise method of sky subtraction. Once subtracting the sky background, we did surface photometry with the Kron elliptical aperture and fitted geometric parameters with an exponential profile model for each galaxy image. Basing on the photometric and geometric results, we further calculated the B-band central surface brightness, mu_{0}(B), for each galaxy and ultimately defined a sample of LSB galaxies consisting of 1129 galaxies with mu_{0}(B) > 22.5 mag arcsec^{-2} and the minor-to-major axis ratio b/a > 0.3. This HI-selected LSB galaxy sample from the alpha.40-SDSS DR7 is a relatively unbiased sample of gas-rich and disk-dominated LSB galaxies, which is complete both in HI observation and the optical magnitude within the limit of SDSS DR7 photometric survey. We made analysis on optical and radio 21cm HI properties of this LSB galaxy sample. Additionally, we statistically investigated the environment of our LSB galaxies, and found that up to 92% of the total LSB galaxies have less than 8 neighbouring galaxies, which strongly evidenced that LSB galaxies prefer to reside in the low-density environment.
