Coordinated Initial Access in Millimetre Wave Standalone Networks

In this paper, a novel coordinated initial access (IA) scheme for clustered millimeter wave small cells (mmSCs) is proposed for the fifth generation mobile communication networks (5G). This solution is a method for efficient and fast initial access for ultra-dense millimeter wave standalone networks without presence of overlaid legacy networks operating on lower frequency. In contrast to the current full beam sweep scheme, where time consuming exhaustive searching is employed, the mmSCs within one cluster will perform the IA procedure in a coordinated manner based on the power delay profile (PDP) measurement reports shared with each other via the backhaul links and thereby avoiding the full beam sweep. The proposed scheme significantly reduces the initial access time, enhances the access robustness and reduces the cost and complexity of the mobile terminals.

Distributed Beam Scheduling for Multi-RAT Coexistence in mm-Wave 5G Networks

Millimetre-wave communication (licensed or unlicensed) is envisaged to be an important part of the fifth generation (5G) multi-RAT ecosystem. In this paper, we consider the spectrum bands shared by 5G cellular base stations and some existing networks, such as WiGig. Sharing the same band among such multiple radio access technologies (RATs) is very challenging due to the lack of centralized coordination and demands novel and efficient interference mitigation and coexistence mechanisms to reduce the mutual interference. To address this important challenge, we propose in this paper a novel multi-RAT coexistence mechanism where neighbouring 5G and WiGig base stations, each serving their own associated UEs, schedule their beam configurations in a distributed manner such that their own utility function, e.g. spectral efficiency, is maximized. We formulate the problem as a combinatorial optimization problem and show via simulations that our proposed distributed algorithms yield a comparable spectral efficiency for the entire networks as that using an exhaustive search, which requires global coordination among coexisting RATs and also has a much higher algorithmic complexity.

Quantifying Data Rate and Bandwidth Requirements for Immersive 5G Experience

The proliferation of smartphones/mobile devices that support a wide range of broadband applications and services has driven the volume of mobile data traffic to an unprecedented high level, requiring a next generation mobile communication system, i.e., the fifth generation (5G). Millimeter wave bands, due to the large available spectrum bandwidth, are considered as one of the most promising approaches to significantly boost the capacity. In this paper, we define a typical use case envisaged in the early stage of the 5G system rollout, where users can experience 100M+ data rate in the target area and at the same time enjoy services demanding extremely high data rates, such as virtual reality and ultra-high definition video. We then break down the use case into four different traffic types: web browsing, content sharing, virtual reality experience and ultra-high definition video, and derive and analyze the distributions of the required instantaneous data rates for each individual traffic type. Finally, we consider the case where multiple users with mixture of traffic types are simultaneously active and analyze the overall data rate and bandwidth requirements to support such a scenario.
