The shock formation and optimal regularities of the resulting shock curves for 1-D scalar conservation laws

The study on the shock formation and the regularities of the resulting shock surfaces for hyperbolic conservation laws is a basic problem in the nonlinear partial differential equations. In this paper, we are concerned with the shock formation and the optimal regularities of the resulting shock curves for the 1-D conservation law $\partial_tu+\partial_xf(u)=0$ with the smooth initial data $u(0,x)=u_0(x)$. If $u_0(x)\in C^{1}(\Bbb R)$ and $f(u)\in C^2(\Bbb R)$, it is well-known that the solution $u$ will blow up on the time $T^*=-\frac{1}{\min{g'(x)}}$ when $\min{g'(x)}<0$ holds for $g(x)=f'(u_0(x))$. Let $x_0$ be a local minimum point of $g'(x)$ such that $g'(x_0)=\min{g'(x)}<0$ and $g''(x_0)=0$, $g^{(3)}(x_0)>0$ (which is called the generic nondegenerate condition), then by Theorem 2 of \cite{Le94}, a weak entropy solution $u$ together with the shock curve $x=φ(t)\in C^2[T^*, T^*+\varepsilon)$ starting from the blowup point $(T^*, x^*=x_0+g(x_0)T^*)$ can be locally constructed. When the generic nondegenerate condition is violated, namely, when $x_0$ is a local minimum point of $g'(x)$ such that $g''(x_0)=g^{(3)}(x_0)=...=g^{(2k_0)}(x_0)=0$ but $g^{(2k_0+1)}(x_0)>0$ for some $k_0\in\Bbb N$ with $k_0\ge 2$; or $g^{(k)}(x_0)=0$ for any $k\in\Bbb N$ and $k\ge 2$, we will study the shock formation and the optimal regularity of the shock curve $x=φ(t)$, meanwhile, some precise descriptions on the behaviors of $u$ near the blowup point $(T^*, x^*)$ are given. Our main aims are to show that: around the blowup point, the shock really appears whether the initial data are degenerate with finite orders or with infinite orders; the optimal regularities of the shock solution and the resulting shock curve have the explicit relations with the degenerate degrees of the initial data.

Global smooth solutions of 3-D quasilinear wave equations with small initial data

In this paper, we are concerned with the 3-D quasilinear wave equation $ \ds\sum_{i,j=0}^3g^{ij}(u, \p u)\p_{ij}^2u$ $=0$ with $(u(0,x), \p_tu(0,x))=(\ve u_0(x), \ve u_1(x))$, where $x_0=t$, $x=(x_1, x_2, x_3)$, $\p=(\p_0, \p_1, ..., \p_3)$, $u_0(x), u_1(x)\in C_0^\infty(\Bbb R^3)$, $\ve>0$ is small enough, and $g^{ij}(u, \p u)=g^{ji}(u, \p u)$ are smooth in their arguments. Without loss of generality, one can write $g^{ij}(u, \p u)=c^{ij}+d^{ij}u+\ds\sum_{k=0}^3e^{ij}_k\p_ku+O(|u|^2+|\p u|^2)$, where $c^{ij}, d^{ij}$ and $e^{ij}_k$ are some constants, and $\ds\sum_{i,j=0}^3c^{ij}\p_{ij}^2=-\square\equiv -\p_t^2+Δ$. When $\ds\sum_{i,j,k=0}^3e^{ij}_kø_kø_iø_j\not\equiv 0$ for $ø_0=-1$ and $ø=(ø_1, ø_2, ø_3)\in\Bbb S^2$, the authors in [7-8] have shown the blowup of the smooth solution $u$ in finite time as long as $(u_0(x), u_1(x))\not\equiv 0$. In the present paper, when $\ds\sum_{i,j,k=0}^3e^{ij}_kø_kø_iø_j\equiv 0$, we will prove the global existence of the smooth solution $u$. Therefore, the complete results on the blowup or global existence of the small data solutions have been established for the general 3-D quasilinear wave equations $\ds\sum_{i,j=0}^3g^{ij}(u, \p u)\p_{ij}^2u=0$.

Large time asymptotic behavior of the compressible Navier-Stokes Equations in partial Space-Periodic Domains

In this paper, we study the large time behavior of the 3-D isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equation in the partial space-periodic domains, and simultaneously show that the related profile systems can be described by like Navier-Stokes equations with suitable "pressure" functions in lower dimensions. Our proofs are based on the energy methods together with some delicate analysis on the corresponding linearized problems.

On global multidimensional supersonic flows with vacuum states at infinity

In this paper, we are concerned with the global existence and stability of a smooth supersonic flow with vacuum state at infinity in a 3-D infinitely long divergent nozzle. The flow is described by a 3-D steady potential equation, which is multi-dimensional quasilinear hyperbolic (but degenerate at infinity) with respect to the supersonic direction, and whose linearized part admits the form $\p_t^2-\ds\f{1}{(1+t)^{2(\g-1)}}(\p_1^2+\p_2^2)+\ds\f{2(\g-1)}{1+t}\p_t$ for $1<\g<2$. From the physical point of view, due to the expansive geometric property of the divergent nozzle and the mass conservation of gas, the moving gas in the nozzle will gradually become rarefactive and tends to a vacuum state at infinity, which implies that such a smooth supersonic flow should be globally stable for small perturbations since there are no strong resulting compressions in the motion of the flow. We will confirm such a global stability phenomena by rigorous mathematical proofs and further show that there do not exist vacuum domains in any finite part of the nozzle.

On the instability problem of a 3-D transonic oblique shock wave

In this paper, we are concerned with the instability problem of a 3-D transonic oblique shock wave for the steady supersonic flow past an infinitely long sharp wedge. The flow is assumed to be isentropic and irrotational. It was indicated in pages 317 of [9] that if a steady supersonic flow comes from minus infinity and hits a sharp symmetric wedge, then it follows from the Rankine-Hugoniot conditions and the physical entropy condition that there possibly appear a weak shock or a strong shock attached at the edge of the sharp wedge, which corresponds to a supersonic shock or a transonic shock, respectively. The question arises which of the two actually occurs. It has frequently been stated that the strong one is unstable and that, therefore, only the weak one could occur. However, a convincing proof of this instability has apparently never been given. The aim of this paper is to understand such a longstanding open question. We will show that the attached 3-D transonic oblique shock problem is overdetermined, which implies that the 3-D transonic shock is unstable in general.

The global smooth symmetric solution to 2-D full compressible Euler system of Chaplygin gases

For one dimensional or multidimensional compressible Euler system of polytropic gases, it is well known that the smooth solution will generally develop singularities in finite time. However, for three dimensional Chaplygin gases, due to the crucial role of "null condition" in the potential equation which is derived by the irrotational and isentropic flow, P.Godin in [9] has proved the global existence of a smooth 3-D spherically symmetric flow with variable entropy when the initial data are of small smooth perturbations with compact supports to a constant state. It is noted that there are some essential differences on the global solution or blowup problems between 2-D and 3-D hyperbolic systems. In this paper, we will focus on the global symmetric solution problem of 2-D full compressible Euler system of Chaplygin gases. Through carrying out involved analysis and finding an appropriate weight we can derive some uniform weighted energy estimates on the small symmetric solution to 2-D compressible Euler system of Chaplygin gases and further establish the global existence of smooth solution by continuous induction method.
