BiBERT: Accurate Fully Binarized BERT

The large pre-trained BERT has achieved remarkable performance on Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks but is also computation and memory expensive. As one of the powerful compression approaches, binarization extremely reduces the computation and memory consumption by utilizing 1-bit parameters and bitwise operations. Unfortunately, the full binarization of BERT (i.e., 1-bit weight, embedding, and activation) usually suffer a significant performance drop, and there is rare study addressing this problem. In this paper, with the theoretical justification and empirical analysis, we identify that the severe performance drop can be mainly attributed to the information degradation and optimization direction mismatch respectively in the forward and backward propagation, and propose BiBERT, an accurate fully binarized BERT, to eliminate the performance bottlenecks. Specifically, BiBERT introduces an efficient Bi-Attention structure for maximizing representation information statistically and a Direction-Matching Distillation (DMD) scheme to optimize the full binarized BERT accurately. Extensive experiments show that BiBERT outperforms both the straightforward baseline and existing state-of-the-art quantized BERTs with ultra-low bit activations by convincing margins on the NLP benchmark. As the first fully binarized BERT, our method yields impressive 56.3 times and 31.2 times saving on FLOPs and model size, demonstrating the vast advantages and potential of the fully binarized BERT model in real-world resource-constrained scenarios.

Distributionally Robust Joint Chance-Constrained Optimization for Networked Microgrids Considering Contingencies and Renewable Uncertainty

In light of a reliable and resilient power system under extreme weather and natural disasters, networked microgrids integrating local renewable resources have been adopted extensively to supply demands when the main utility experiences blackouts. However, the stochastic nature of renewables and unpredictable contingencies are difficult to address with the deterministic energy management framework. The paper proposes a comprehensive distributionally robust joint chance-constrained (DR-JCC) framework that incorporates microgrid island, power flow, distributed batteries and voltage control constraints. All chance constraints are solved jointly and each one is assigned to an optimized violation rate. To highlight, the JCC problem with the optimized violation rates has been recognized to be NP-hard and challenging to be solved. This paper proposes a novel evolutionary algorithm that successfully tackles the problem and reduces the solution conservativeness (i.e. operation cost) by around 50% comparing with the baseline Bonferroni Approximation. Considering the imperfect solar power forecast, we construct three data-driven ambiguity sets to model uncertain forecast error distributions. The solution is thus robust for any distribution in sets with the shared moment and shape assumptions. The proposed method is validated by robustness tests based on those sets and firmly secures the solution robustness.

Over-sampling De-occlusion Attention Network for Prohibited Items Detection in Noisy X-ray Images

Security inspection is X-ray scanning for personal belongings in suitcases, which is significantly important for the public security but highly time-consuming for human inspectors. Fortunately, deep learning has greatly promoted the development of computer vision, offering a possible way of automatic security inspection. However, items within a luggage are randomly overlapped resulting in noisy X-ray images with heavy occlusions. Thus, traditional CNN-based models trained through common image recognition datasets fail to achieve satisfactory performance in this scenario. To address these problems, we contribute the first high-quality prohibited X-ray object detection dataset named OPIXray, which contains 8885 X-ray images from 5 categories of the widely-occurred prohibited item ``cutters''. The images are gathered from an airport and these prohibited items are annotated manually by professional inspectors, which can be used as a benchmark for model training and further facilitate future research. To better improve occluded X-ray object detection, we further propose an over-sampling de-occlusion attention network (DOAM-O), which consists of a novel de-occlusion attention module and a new over-sampling training strategy. Specifically, our de-occlusion module, namely DOAM, simultaneously leverages the different appearance information of the prohibited items; the over-sampling training strategy forces the model to put more emphasis on these hard samples consisting these items of high occlusion levels, which is more suitable for this scenario. We comprehensively evaluated DOAM-O on the OPIXray dataset, which proves that our model can stably improve the performance of the famous detection models such as SSD, YOLOv3, and FCOS, and outperform many extensively-used attention mechanisms.

Predictive Control of Rural Microgrids with Temperature-dependent Battery Degradation Cost

Off-grid systems have emerged as a sustainable and cost-effective solution for rural electrification. In sub-Sarahan Africa (SSA), a great number of solar-hybrid microgrids have been installed or planned, operating stand-alone or grid-tied to a weak grid. Presence of intermittent energy sources necessitates the provision of energy storage for system balancing. Reliability and economic performance of those rural microgrids strongly depend on specific control strategies. This work develops a predictive control framework dedicated to rural microgrids incorporating a temperature-dependent battery degradation model. Based on a scalable DC PV-battery microgrid, the realistic simulation shows its superior performance in the reliability improvement and cost reduction. Compared with the day-ahead control without the temperature-dependent battery degradation model, this control strategy can improve the reliability by 5.5% and extend the lead-acid battery life time by 26%, equivalent to lowering the levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) by 13%.

Capillary rupture of suspended polymer concentric rings

We present the first experimental study on the simultaneous capillary instability amongst viscous concentric rings suspended atop an immiscible medium. The rings ruptured upon annealing, with three types of phase correlation between neighboring rings. In the case of weak substrate confinement, the rings ruptured independently when they were sparsely distanced, but via an out-of-phase mode when packed closer. If the substrate confinement was strong, the rings would rupture via an in-phase mode, resulting in radially aligned droplets. The concentric ring geometry caused a competition between the phase correlation of neighboring rings and the kinetically favorable wavelength, yielding an intriguing, recursive surface pattern. This frustrated pattern formation behavior was accounted for by a scaling analysis.
