Tree-structured Auxiliary Online Knowledge Distillation

Traditional knowledge distillation adopts a two-stage training process in which a teacher model is pre-trained and then transfers the knowledge to a compact student model. To overcome the limitation, online knowledge distillation is proposed to perform one-stage distillation when the teacher is unavailable. Recent researches on online knowledge distillation mainly focus on the design of the distillation objective, including attention or gate mechanism. Instead, in this work, we focus on the design of the global architecture and propose Tree-Structured Auxiliary online knowledge distillation (TSA), which adds more parallel peers for layers close to the output hierarchically to strengthen the effect of knowledge distillation. Different branches construct different views of the inputs, which can be the source of the knowledge. The hierarchical structure implies that the knowledge transfers from general to task-specific with the growth of the layers. Extensive experiments on 3 computer vision and 4 natural language processing datasets show that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance without bells and whistles. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to demonstrate the effectiveness of online knowledge distillation for machine translation tasks.

Weakly Supervised Attention Pyramid Convolutional Neural Network for Fine-Grained Visual Classification

Classifying the sub-categories of an object from the same super-category (e.g. bird species, car and aircraft models) in fine-grained visual classification (FGVC) highly relies on discriminative feature representation and accurate region localization. Existing approaches mainly focus on distilling information from high-level features. In this paper, however, we show that by integrating low-level information (e.g. color, edge junctions, texture patterns), performance can be improved with enhanced feature representation and accurately located discriminative regions. Our solution, named Attention Pyramid Convolutional Neural Network (AP-CNN), consists of a) a pyramidal hierarchy structure with a top-down feature pathway and a bottom-up attention pathway, and hence learns both high-level semantic and low-level detailed feature representation, and b) an ROI guided refinement strategy with ROI guided dropblock and ROI guided zoom-in, which refines features with discriminative local regions enhanced and background noises eliminated. The proposed AP-CNN can be trained end-to-end, without the need of additional bounding box/part annotations. Extensive experiments on three commonly used FGVC datasets (CUB-200-2011, Stanford Cars, and FGVC-Aircraft) demonstrate that our approach can achieve state-of-the-art performance. Axiomatization and complexity of modal logic with knowing-what operator on model class K

Standard epistemic logic studies propositional knowledge, yet many other types of knowledge such as "knowing whether", "knowing what", "knowing how" are frequently and widely used in everyday life as well as academic fields. In "Conditionally Knowing What" by Wang and Fan, an axiomatization of the epistemic logic with both regular "knowing that" operator and "conditionally knowing what" operator is given. Then the decidability and complexity of this logic command our study. In this paper, we direct our attention to the arbitrary models instead of epistemic models, thus making things clearer, and then give a axiomatization and a tableau for the modal logic with same operators on arbitrary Kripke models. Given the tableau of this logic, the complexity of the satisfiability problem of this logic is PSPACE-complete.
