Spherical varieties, functoriality, and quantization

We discuss generalizations of the Langlands program, from reductive groups to the local and automorphic spectra of spherical varieties, and to more general representations arising as "quantizations" of suitable Hamiltonian spaces. To a spherical $G$-variety $X$, one associates a dual group ${^LG_X}$ and an $L$-value (encoded in a representation of ${^LG_X}$), which conjecturally describe the local and automorphic spectra of the variety. This sets up a problem of functoriality, for any morphism ${^LG_X}\to {^LG_Y}$ of dual groups. We review, and generalize, Langlands' "beyond endoscopy" approach to this problem. Then, we describe the cotangent bundles of quotient stacks of the relative trace formula, and show that transfer operators of functoriality between relative trace formulas in rank 1 can be interpreted as a change of "geometric quantization" for these cotangent stacks.

On the formal arc space of a reductive monoid

Let $X$ be a scheme of finite type over a finite field $k$, and let $\mathcal L X$ denote its arc space; in particular, $\mathcal L X(k) = X(k[[t]])$. Using the theory of Grinberg, Kazhdan, and Drinfeld on the finite-dimensionality of singularities of $\mathcal L X$ in the neighborhood of non-degenerate arcs, we show that a canonical "basic function" can be defined on the non-degenerate locus of $\mathcal L X(k)$, which corresponds to the trace of Frobenius on the stalks of the intersection complex of any finite-dimensional model. We then proceed to compute this function when $X$ is an affine toric variety or an "$L$-monoid". Our computation confirms the expectation that the basic function is a generating function for a local unramified $L$-function; in particular, in the case of an $L$-monoid we prove a conjecture formulated by the second-named author.

Plancherel decomposition of Howe duality and Euler factorization of automorphic functionals

There are several global functionals on irreducible automorphic representations which are Eulerian, that is: pure tensors of local functionals, when the representation is written as an Euler product $π= \otimes'_v π_v$ of local representations. The precise factorization of such functionals is of interest to number theorists and is -- naturally -- very often related to special values of $L$-functions. The purpose of this paper is to develop in full generality the Plancherel formula for the Weil or oscillator representation, considered as a unitary representation of a reductive dual pair, and to use it in order to demonstrate a very general principle of Euler factorization: local factors are determined via the Langlands correspondence by a local Plancherel formula. This pattern has already been observed and conjectured in the author's prior work with Venkatesh in the case of period integrals. Here, it is shown that the Rallis inner product formula amounts to the same principle in the setting of global Howe duality.

Inverse Satake transforms

Let H be a split reductive group over a local non-archimedean field, and let H^ denote its Langlands dual group. We present an explicit formula for the generating function of an unramified L-function associated to a highest weight representation of the dual group, considered as a series of elements in the Hecke algebra of H. This offers an alternative approach to a solution of the same problem by Wen-Wei Li. Moreover, we generalize the notion of "Satake transform" and perform the analogous calculation for a large class of spherical varieties.

Spherical functions on spherical varieties

Let X=H\G be a homogeneous spherical variety for a split reductive group G over the integers o of a p-adic field k, and K=G(o) a hyperspecial maximal compact subgroup of G=G(k). We compute eigenfunctions ("spherical functions") on X=X(k) under the action of the unramified (or spherical) Hecke algebra of G, generalizing many classical results of "Casselman-Shalika" type. Under some additional assumptions on X we also prove a variant of the formula which involves a certain quotient of L-values, and we present several applications such as: (1) a statement on "good test vectors" in the multiplicity-free case (namely, that an H-invariant functional on an irreducible unramified representation πis non-zero on π^K), (2) the unramified Plancherel formula for X, including a formula for the "Tamagawa measure" of X(o), and (3) a computation of the most continuous part of H-period integrals of principal Eisenstein series.

Spherical varieties and integral representations of L-functions

We present a conceptual and uniform interpretation of the methods of integral representations of L-functions (period integrals, Rankin-Selberg integrals). This leads to: (i) a way to classify of such integrals, based on the classification of certain embeddings of spherical varieties (whenever the latter is available), (ii) a conjecture which would imply a vast generalization of the method, and (iii) an explanation of the phenomenon of "weight factors" in a relative trace formula. We also prove results of independent interest, such as the generalized Cartan decomposition for spherical varieties of split groups over p-adic fields (following an argument of Gaitsgory and Nadler).

Beyond endoscopy for the relative trace formula I: local theory

For the group G = PGL(2) we prove nonstandard matching and the fundamental lemma between two relative trace formulas: on one hand, the relative trace formula of Jacquet for the quotient T\G/T, where T is a nontrivial torus; on the other, the Kuznetsov trace formula with nonstandard test functions. The matching is nonstandard in the sense that orbital integrals are related to each other not one-by-one, but via an explicit integral transform. These results will be used in the sequel to compare the corresponding global trace formulas and reprove the celebrated result of Waldspurger on toric periods.

On the unramified spectrum of spherical varieties over p-adic fields

The description of irreducible representations of a group G can be seen as a question in harmonic analysis; namely, decomposing a suitable space of functions on G into irreducibles for the action of G x G by left and right multiplication. For a split p-adic reductive group G over a local non-archimedean field, unramified irreducible smooth representations are in bijection with semisimple conjugacy classes in the ``Langlands dual'' group. We generalize this description to an arbitrary spherical variety X of G as follows: Irreducible unramified quotients of the space $C_c^\infty(X)$ are in natural ``almost bijection'' with a number of copies of $A_X^*/W_X$, the quotient of a complex torus by the ``little Weyl group'' of X. This leads to a description of the Hecke module of unramified vectors (a weak analog of geometric results of Gaitsgory and Nadler), and an understanding of the phenomenon that representations ``distinguished'' by certain subgroups are functorial lifts. In the course of the proof, rationality properties of spherical varieties are examined and a new interpretation is given for the action, defined by F. Knop, of the Weyl group on the set of Borel orbits.
