$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry-breaking enhanced cavity optomechanical magnetometry

$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry-breaking enhanced cavity optomechanical magnetometer is proposed, which is achieved by monitoring the change of intensity of a nonlinear four-wave mixing (FWM) process in a gain-cavity-assisted cavity optomechanical system (COMS). Compared with the traditional single loss COMS, the FWM intensity can be enhanced by two orders of magnitude when the gain-cavity-assisted COMS operates at the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry-breaking phase. Meanwhile, the sensitivity of magnetic field sensing can be increased from $10^{-9}$T to $10^{-11}$T. This originally comes from the fact that the effective detuning and decay of loss-cavity can be effectively modified in the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry-breaking phase. Our work shows that an ultrahigh-sensitivity magnetometer can be achieved in the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry-breaking COMS, which will have wide applications in the field of quantum sensing.

Qi-Wa, a problem that has plagued Chinese scrolls for millenniums

Qi-Wa refers to the up curl on the lengths of handscrolls and hanging scrolls, which has troubled Chinese artisans and emperors for as long as the art of painting and calligraphy exists. This warp is unwelcomed not only for aesthetic reasons, but its potential damage to the fiber and ink. Although it is generally treated as a part of the cockling and curling due to climate, mounting procedures, and conservation conditions, we emphasize that the intrinsic curvature incurred from the storage is in fact the main cause of Qi-Wa. The Qi-Wa height is determined by experiments to obey scaling relations with the length, width, curvature, and thickness of the scroll, which are supported by Molecular Dynamics Simulation and theoretic derivations. This understanding helps us come up with plausible remedies to mitigate Qi-Wa. All proposals are tested on real mounted paper and in simulations. Due to the general nature of this warp, we believe the lessons learnt from studying ancient Chinese scrolls can be applied to modern technologies such as the development of flexible electronic paper and computer screen.

The First Infrared Telescope in Tibet Plateau, China

We plan to install an infrared telescope at the new site of Tibet, China. The primary mirror diameter is 50cm, and the focal ratio F8. The Xenics 640\times512 near infrared camera is employed, equipped with a dedicated high speed InGaAs detector array, working up to 1.7μm. The new site is located on 5100m mountain, near Gar town, Ali, where is an excellent site for both infrared and submillimeter observations. The telescope will be remotely controlled through internet. The goal of IRT is to make site testing, detect variable stars, and search for extrasolar planets.
