On Signed Multiplicities of Schur Expansions Surrounding Petrie Symmetric Functions

For $k\ge 1$, the homogeneous symmetric functions $G(k,m)$ of degree $m$ defined by $\sum_{m\ge 0} G(k,m) z^m=\prod_{i\ge 1} \big(1+x_iz+x^2_iz^2+\cdots+x^{k-1}_iz^{k-1}\big)$ are called \emph{Petrie symmetric functions}. As derived by Grinberg and Fu--Mei independently, the expansion of $G(k,m)$ in the basis of Schur functions $s_λ$ turns out to be signed multiplicity free, i.e., the coefficients are $-1$, $0$ and $1$. In this paper we give a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficient of $s_λ$ in terms of the $k$-core of $λ$ and a sequence of rim hooks of size $k$ removed from $λ$. We further study the product of $G(k,m)$ with a power sum symmetric function $p_n$. For all $n\ge 1$, we give necessary and sufficient conditions on the parameters $k$ and $m$ in order for the expansion of $G(k,m)\cdot p_n$ in the basis of Schur functions to be signed multiplicity free. This settles affirmatively a conjecture of Alexandersson as the special case $n=2$.

Statistics of Partial Permutations via Catalan matrices

A generalized Catalan matrix $(a_{n,k})_{n,k\ge 0}$ is generated by two seed sequences $\mathbf{s}=(s_0,s_1,\ldots)$ and $\mathbf{t}=(t_1,t_2,\ldots)$ together with a recurrence relation. By taking $s_\ell=2\ell+1$ and $t_\ell=\ell^2$ we can interpret $a_{n,k}$ as the number of partial permutations, which are $n\times n$ $0,1$-matrices of $k$ zero rows with at most one $1$ in each row or column. In this paper we prove that most of fundamental statistics and some set-valued statistics on permutations can also be defined on partial permutations and be encoded in the seed sequences. Results on two interesting permutation families, namely the connected permutations and cycle-up-down permutations, are also given.

An extending result on spectral radius of bipartite graphs

Let $G$ denote a bipartite graph with $e$ edges without isolated vertices. It was known that the spectral radius of $G$ is at most the square root of $e$, and the upper bound is attained if and only if $G$ is a complete bipartite graph. Suppose that $G$ is not a complete bipartite graph, and $e-1$ and $e+1$ are not twin primes. We determine the maximal spectral radius of $G$. As a byproduct of our study, we obtain a spectral characterization of a pair $(e-1, e+1)$ of integers to be a pair of twin primes.
