A Nitrogen-rich AGN Powering a Large Ionizing Bubble at z=8.63

We report the detection of Lyαα in CANUCS-LRD-z8.6, a recently discovered AGN at z = 8.63 by Tripodi et al. (2024), in new NIRSpec/MSA G140H/F070LP observations. We detect broad Lyαα emission (FWHM =1540±260= 1540 \pm 260 km/s) near the systemic velocity, which suggests a large ionizing bubble considering that the universe is almost fully neutral at the redshift. Through Lyαα line-shape modeling assuming a Stromgren sphere, we find a large bubble radius, Rb=1.5−0.2+0.3R_b = 1.5^{+0.3}_{-0.2} pMpc, and a moderately high Lyαα escape fraction, fesc=11±3f_{esc} = 11 \pm 3 %. The intrinsic line width is inferred to be broad (2200±2802200 \pm 280 km/s), likely originating in the broad-line region. Existing data indicate that CANUCS-LRD-z8.6 is within a mild overdensity, δ=1.8−0.6+3.0δ= 1.8^{+3.0}_{-0.6}, suggesting that other galaxies in its proximity might have contributed to the formation of the bubble. The high N IV]λλ1488 / C IVλλ1548 and N IV]λλ1488 / O III]λλ1661 line ratios measured in existing NIRSpec/PRISM data indicate nitrogen enrichment in this metal-poor, low-luminosity AGN. The spectroscopic features are overall similar to other nitrogen-rich galaxies discovered in the literature, such as GN-z11 and GHZ2/GLASSz12. This suggests that CANUCS-LRD-z8.6 may represent one of the evolutionary phases of those nitrogen-rich galaxies.

BEACON: JWST NIRCam Pure-parallel Imaging Survey. II. Physical Properties of z=7−14z=7-14 Galaxies

We present photometric properties of 161 galaxy candidates at z=7−14z=7-14 selected from the second data release (DR2) of BEACON, a JWST Cycle 2 pure-parallel NIRCam imaging program. Carefully selected from 36 independent pointings (corresponding to ∼350\sim350\,arcmin2^2 sky coverage), and hence with reduced cosmic variance, our galaxy candidates provide an unbiased sample for investigating galaxy properties over a wide range of environments. We measure the physical properties, including UV continuum slope (βUVβ_{\rm UV}), stellar mass (M∗M_*), star formation rate (SFR), and sizes. Our highest redshift galaxy candidate at z=13.71±0.15z=13.71\pm0.15 has a remarkably bright UV luminosity of MUV=−21.19±0.08M_{\rm UV}=-21.19\pm0.08, making it the brightest galaxy at z>12z>12 if spectroscopically confirmed. With an extremely blue UV slope, compact morphology, and high star formation rate surface density (ΣSFRΣ_{\rm SFR}), this candidate may have extremely low metallicity, high ionizing photon escape fraction, or contributions from an AGN. Among our multiple independent sightlines, we identify three fields of galaxy number overdensity with >3σ>3σ significance. The properties of galaxies in various environments do not exhibit significant differences, implying either that accelerated galaxy evolution in overdense regions is not yet widespread at z>7z>7, or that the current constraints are limited by sample size. Our simulations indicate that increasing the sample by an order of magnitude would allow such environmental trends to be robustly confirmed or ruled out, underscoring the importance of future pure-parallel observations.

Census for the Rest-frame Optical and UV Morphologies of Galaxies at z=4−10z=4-10: First Phase of Inside-Out Galaxy Formation

We present the rest-frame optical and UV surface brightness (SB) profiles for 149149 galaxies with Mopt<−19.4M_{\rm opt}< -19.4 mag at z=4z=4-1010 (2929 of which are spectroscopically confirmed with JWST NIRSpec), securing high signal-to-noise ratios of 1010-135135 with deep JWST NIRCam 11-5μ5μm images obtained by the CEERS survey. We derive morphologies of our high-zz galaxies, carefully evaluating the systematics of SB profile measurements with Monte Carlo simulations as well as the impacts of a) AGNs, b) multiple clumps including galaxy mergers, c) spatial resolution differences with previous HST studies, and d) strong emission lines, e.g., Hαα and [OIII], on optical morphologies with medium-band F410M images. Conducting Sérsic profile fitting to our high-zz galaxy SBs with GALFIT, we obtain the effective radii of optical re,optr_{\rm e, opt} and UV re,UVr_{\rm e, UV} wavelengths ranging re,opt=0.05r_{\rm e, opt}=0.05-1.61.6 kpc and re,UV=0.03r_{\rm e, UV}=0.03-1.71.7 kpc that are consistent with previous results within large scatters in the size luminosity relations. However, we find the effective radius ratio, re,opt/re,UVr_{\rm e, opt}/r_{\rm e, UV}, is almost unity, 1.01−0.22+0.351.01^{+0.35}_{-0.22}, over z=4z=4-1010 with no signatures of past inside-out star formation such found at z∼0z\sim 0-22. There are no spatial offsets exceeding 3σ3σ between the optical and UV morphology centers in case of no mergers, indicative of major star-forming activity only found near a mass center of galaxies at z≳4z\gtrsim 4 probably experiencing the first phase of inside-out galaxy formation.

The Active Galactic Nuclei in the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment Survey (HETDEX) I. Sample selection

We present the first Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) catalog in the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment Survey (HETDEX) observed between January 2017 and June 2020. HETDEX is an ongoing spectroscopic survey with no pre-selection based on magnitudes, colors or morphologies, enabling us to select AGN based on their spectral features. Both luminous quasars and low-luminosity Seyferts are found in our catalog. AGN candidates are selected with at least two significant AGN emission lines, such as the LyA and CIV line pair, or with single broad emission lines (FWHM > 1000 km/s). Each source is further confirmed by visual inspections. This catalog contains 5,322 AGN, covering an effective sky coverage of 30.61 deg^2. A total of 3,733 of these AGN have secure redshifts, and we provide redshift estimates for the remaining 1,589 single broad-line AGN with no cross matched spectral redshifts from SDSS DR14Q. The redshift range of the AGN catalog is 0.25 < z < 4.32, with a median of z = 2.1. The bolometric luminosity range is 10^9-10^14 Lsun with a median of 10^12 Lsun. The median r-band magnitude of the AGN is 21.6 mag, with 34% of the AGN have r > 22.5, and 2.6% reaching the detection limit at r ~ 26 mag of the deepest imaging surveys we searched. We also provide a composite spectrum of the AGN sample covering 700 AA - 4400 AA.

The Active Galactic Nuclei in the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment Survey (HETDEX) II. Luminosity Function

We present the LyA emission line luminosity function (LF) of the Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in the first release of the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment Survey (HETDEX) AGN catalog (Liu et al. 2022, Paper I). The AGN are selected either by emission-line pairs characteristic of AGN or by single broad emission line, free of any photometric pre-selections (magnitude/color/morphology). The sample consists of 2,346 AGN spanning 1.88<z<3.53, covering an effective area of 30.61 deg^2. Approximately 2.6 of the HETDEX AGN are not detected at >5σ>5σ confidence at r~26 in the deepest rr-band images we have searched. The LyA line luminosity ranges from ~10^42.3 to ~10^45.9 erg s^-1. Our LyA LF shows a turnover luminosity with opposite slopes on the bright end and the faint end: The space density is highest at L_LyA^*=10^43.4 erg s^-1. We explore the evolution of the AGN LF over a broader redshift range (0.8<z<3); constructing the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) LF with the 1450 AA monochromatic luminosity of the power-law component of the continuum (M1450\rm M_{1450}) from M_1450~-18 to ~-27.5. We divide the sample into three redshift bins (z~1.5, 2.1, and 2.6). In all three redshift bins, our UV LFs indicate that the space density of AGN is highest at the turnover luminosity M_1450^* with opposite slopes on the bright end and the faint end. The M_1450 LFs in the three redshift bins can be well-fit with a luminosity-evolution-density-evolution (LEDE) model: the turnover luminosity (M_1450^*) increases and the turnover density (Phi^*) decreases with increasing redshift.

First HETDEX Spectroscopic Determinations of Lyαα and UV Luminosity Functions at z=2−3z=2-3: Bridging a Gap Between Faint AGN and Bright Galaxies

We present Lyαα and ultraviolet-continuum (UV) luminosity functions (LFs) of galaxies and active galactic nuclei (AGN) at z=2.0−3.5z=2.0-3.5 determined by the un-targetted optical spectroscopic survey of the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX). We combine deep Subaru imaging with HETDEX spectra resulting in 11.411.4 deg2^2 of fiber-spectra sky coverage, obtaining 1832018320 galaxies spectroscopically identified with Lyαα emission, 21262126 of which host type 1 AGN showing broad (FWHM >1000~>1000 km s−1^{-1}) Lyαα emission lines. We derive the Lyαα (UV) LF over 2 orders of magnitude covering bright galaxies and AGN in log⁡LLyα/[erg s−1]=43.3−45.5\log L_\mathrm{Lyα}/\mathrm{[erg~s^{-1}]}=43.3-45.5 (−27<MUV<−20-27<M_\mathrm{UV}<-20) by the 1/Vmax1/V_\mathrm{max} estimator. Our results reveal the bright-end hump of the Lyαα LF is composed of type 1 AGN. In conjunction with previous spectroscopic results at the faint end, we measure a slope of the best-fit Schechter function to be αSch=−1.70−0.14+0.13α_\mathrm{Sch}=-1.70^{+0.13}_{-0.14}, which indicates αSchα_\mathrm{Sch} steepens from z=2−3z=2-3 towards high redshift. Our UV LF agrees well with previous AGN UV LFs, and extends to faint-AGN and bright-galaxy regimes. The number fraction of Lyαα-emitting objects (XLAEX_\mathrm{LAE}) increases from MUV∗∼−21M_\mathrm{UV}^*\sim-21 to bright magnitude due to the contribution of type 1 AGN, while previous studies claim that XLyαX_\mathrm{Lyα} decreases from faint magnitude to MUV∗M_\mathrm{UV}^*, suggesting a valley in the XLyα−X_\mathrm{Lyα}-magnitude relation at MUV∗M_\mathrm{UV}^*. Comparing our UV LF of type 1 AGN at z=2−3z=2-3 with those at z=0z=0, we find that the number density of faint (MUV>−21M_\mathrm{UV}>-21) type 1 AGN increases from z∼2z\sim2 to z∼0z\sim0 as opposed to the evolution of bright (MUV<−21M_\mathrm{UV}<-21) type 1 AGN, suggesting the AGN downsizing in the rest-frame UV luminosity.

The Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) Survey Design, Reductions, and Detections

We describe the survey design, calibration, commissioning, and emission-line detection algorithms for the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX). The goal of HETDEX is to measure the redshifts of over a million Lyαα emitting galaxies between 1.88<z<3.52, in a 540 deg^2 area encompassing a co-moving volume of 10.9 Gpc^3. No pre-selection of targets is involved; instead the HETDEX measurements are accomplished via a spectroscopic survey using a suite of wide-field integral field units distributed over the focal plane of the telescope. This survey measures the Hubble expansion parameter and angular diameter distance, with a final expected accuracy of better than 1%. We detail the project's observational strategy, reduction pipeline, source detection, and catalog generation, and present initial results for science verification in the COSMOS, Extended Groth Strip, and GOODS-N fields. We demonstrate that our data reach the required specifications in throughput, astrometric accuracy, flux limit, and object detection, with the end products being a catalog of emission-line sources, their object classifications, and flux-calibrated spectra.
