On biharmonic conformal hypersurfaces

In this paper, we first derive biharmonic equation for conformal hypersurfaces in a generic Riemannian manifold generalizing that for biharmonic hypersurfaces in \cite{Ou1} and that for biharmonic conformal surfaces in \cite{Ou3, Ou2, Ou4}. We then show that if a totally umbilical hypersurface in a space form admits a biharmonic conformal immersion into the ambient space, then the conformal factor has to be an isoparametric function. We also prove that no part of a non-minimal totally umbilical hypersurface in a space form of nonpositive curvature admits a biharmonic conformally immersion into that space form whilst, for the positive curvature space form, we show that the totally umbilical hypersurface $S^4(\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2})\hookrightarrow S^5$ does admit a biharmonic conformal immersion into $S^5$.

Biharmonic homogeneous polynomial maps between spheres

In this paper we first prove a characterization formula for biharmonic maps in Euclidean spheres and, as an application, we construct a family of biharmonic maps from a flat $2$-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}$ into the $3$-dimensional unit Euclidean sphere $\mathbb{S}^3$. Then, for the special case of maps between spheres whose components are given by homogeneous polynomials of the same degree, we find a more specific form for their bitension field. Further, we apply this formula to the case when the degree is $2$, and we obtain the classification of all proper biharmonic quadratic forms from $\mathbb{S}^1$ to $\mathbb{S}^n$, $n \geq 2$, from $\mathbb{S}^m$ to $\mathbb{S}^2$, $m \geq 2$, and from $\mathbb{S}^m$ to $\mathbb{S}^3$, $m \geq 2$.

Stability and the index of biharmonic hypersurfaces in a Riemannian manifold

In this paper, we give an explicit second variation formula for a biharmonic hypersurface in a Riamannian manifold similar to that of a minimal hypersurface. We then use the second variation formula to compute the stability index of the known biharmonic hypersurfaces in a Euclidean sphere, and to prove the non-existence of unstable proper biharmonic hypersurface in a Euclidean space or a hyperbolic space, which adds another special case to support Chen's conjecture on biharmonic submanifolds.

f-Biharmonic maps and f-biharmonic submanifolds II

We continue our study [Ou4] of f-biharmonic maps and f-biharmonic submanifolds by exploring the applications of f-biharmonic maps and the relationships among biharmonicity, f-biharmonicity and conformality of maps between Riemannian manifolds. We are able to characterize harmonic maps and minimal submanifolds by using the concept of f-biharmonic maps and prove that the set of all f-biharmonic maps from 2-dimensional domain is invariant under the conformal change of the metric on the domain. We give an improved equation for f-biharmonic hypersurfaces and use it to prove some rigidity theorems about f-biharmonic hypersurfaces in nonpositively curved manifolds, and to give some classifications of f-biharmonic hypersurfaces in Einstein spaces and in space forms. Finally, we also use the improved f-biharmonic hypersurface equation to obtain an improved equation and some classifications of biharmonic conformal immersions of surfaces into a 3-manifold.

Biharmonic and f-biharmonic maps from a 2-sphere

We study biharmonic maps and f-biharmonic maps from a round sphere $(S^2, g_0)$, the latter maps are equivalent to biharmonic maps from Riemann spheres $(S^2, f^{-1}g_0)$. We proved that for rotationally symmetric maps between rotationally symmetric spaces, both biharmonicity and f-biharmonicity reduce to a 2nd order linear ordinary differential equation. As applications, we give a method to produce biharmonic maps and f-biharmonic maps from given biharmonic maps and we construct many examples of biharmonic and f-biharmonic maps from a round sphere $S^2$ and between two round spheres. Our examples include non-conformal proper biharmonic maps $(S^2, f^{-1}g_0)\longrightarrow S^2$ and $(S^2, f^{-1}g_0)\longrightarrow S^n$, or non-conformal f-biharmonic maps $(S^2, g_0)\longrightarrow S^2$ and $(S^2,g_0)\longrightarrow S^n$ from round sphere with two singular points.

Biharmonic submanifolds of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds

In this paper, we derived biharmonic equations for pseudo-Riemannian submanifolds of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds which includes the biharmonic equations for submanifolds of Riemannian manifolds as a special case. As applications, we proved that a pseudo-umbilical biharmonic pseudo-Riemannian submanifold of a pseudo-Riemannian manifold has constant mean curvature, we completed the classifications of biharmonic pseudo-Riemannian hypersurfaces with at most two distinct principal curvatures, which were used to give four construction methods to produce proper biharmonic pseudo-Riemannian submanifolds from minimal submanifolds. We also made some comparison study between biharmonic hypersurfaces of Riemannian space forms and the space-like biharmonic hypersurfaces of pseudo-Riemannian space forms.

Biharmonic maps from tori into a 2-sphere

Biharmonic maps are generalizations of harmonic maps. A well-known result of Eells and Wood on harmonic maps between surfaces shows that there exists no harmonic map from a torus into a sphere (whatever the metrics chosen) in the homotopy class of maps of Brower degree $\pm 1$. It would be interesting to know if there exists any biharmonic map in that homotopy class of maps. In this paper, we obtain some classifications on biharmonic maps from a torus into a sphere, where the torus is provided with a flat or a class of non-flat metrics whilst the sphere is provided with the standard metric. Our results show that there exists no proper biharmonic maps of degree $\pm 1$ in a large family of maps from a torus into a sphere.

On the generalized Chen's conjecture on biharmonic submanifolds

The generalized Chen's conjecture on biharmonic submanifolds asserts that any biharmonic submanifold of a non-positively curved manifold is minimal (see e.g., [CMO1], [MO], [BMO1], [BMO2], [BMO3], [Ba1], [Ba2], [Ou1], [Ou2], [IIU]). In this paper, we prove that this conjecture is false by constructing foliations of proper biharmonic hyperplanes in a 5-dimensional conformally flat space with negative sectional curvature. Many examples of proper biharmonic submanifolds of non-positively curved spaces are also given.

Biharmonic maps from a 2-sphere

Motivated by the rich theory of harmonic maps from a 2-sphere, we study biharmonic maps from a 2-sphere in this paper. We first derive biharmonic equation for rotationally symmetric maps between rotationally symmetric 2-manifolds. We then apply the equation to obtain a classification of biharmonic maps in a family of rotationally symmetric maps between 2-spheres. We also find many examples of proper biharmonic maps defined locally on a 2-sphere. Our results seem to suggest that any biharmonic map $S^2\longrightarrow (N^n, h)$ be a weakly conformal immersion.

On f-biharmonic maps and f-biharmonic submanifolds

f-Biharmonic maps are the extrema of the f-bienergy functional. f-biharmonic submanifolds are submanifolds whose defining isometric immersions are f-biharmonic maps. In this paper, we prove that an f-biharmonic map from a compact Riemannian manifold into a non-positively curved manifold with constant f-bienergy density is a harmonic map; any f-biharmonic function on a compact manifold is constant, and that the inversions about $S^m$ for $m\ge 3$ are proper f-biharmonic conformal diffeomorphisms. We derive f-biharmonic submanifolds equations and prove that a surface in a manifold $(N^n, h)$ is an f-biharmonic surface if and only it can be biharmonically conformally immersed into $(N^n,h)$. We also give a complete classification of f-biharmonic curves in 3-dimensional Euclidean space. Many examples of proper f-biharmonic maps and f-biharmonic surfaces and curves are given.

Biharmonic conformal immersions into 3-dimensional manifolds

Motivated by the beautiful theory and the rich applications of harmonic conformal immersions and conformal immersions of constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces, we study biharmonic conformal immersions of surfaces into a generic 3-manifold. We first derive an invariant equation for such immersions, we then try to answer the question, "what surfaces can be biharmonically conformally immersed into Euclidean 3-space?" We prove that a circular cylinder is the only CMC surface that can be biharmonically conformally immersed into a Euclidean 3-space; We obtain a classification of biharmonic conformal immersions of complete CMC surfaces into a Euclidean 3-space and a hyperbolic 3-spaces. We also study rotational surfaces that can be biharmonically conformally immersed into a Euclidean 3-space and prove that a circular cone can never such an immersion.

Biharmonic hypersurfaces in a conformally flat space

Biharmonic hypersurfaces in a generic conformally flat space are studied in this paper. The equation of such hypersurfaces is derived and is used to determine the conformally flat metric $f^{-2}δ_{ij}$ on the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{m+1}$ so that a minimal hypersurface $M^m\longrightarrow (\mathbb{R}^{m+1}, δ_{ij})$ in a Euclidean space becomes a biharmonic hypersurface $M^m\longrightarrow (\mathbb{R}^{m+1}, f^{-2}δ_{ij})$ in the conformally flat space. Our examples include all biharmonic hypersurfaces found in [Ou1] and [OT] as special cases.

Constant mean curvature and totally umbilical biharmonic surfaces in 3-dimensional geometries

We prove that a totally umbilical biharmonic surface in any $3$-dimensional Riemannian manifold has constant mean curvature. We use this to show that a totally umbilical surface in Thurston's 3-dimensional geometries is proper biharmonic if and only if it is a part of $S^2(1/\sqrt{2})$ in $S^3$. We also give complete classifications of constant mean curvature proper biharmonic surfaces in 3-dimensional geometries and in 3-dimensional Bianchi-Cartan-Vranceanu spaces, and a complete classifications of proper biharmonic Hopf cylinders in 3-dimensional Bianchi-Cartan-Vranceanu spaces.

Infinity-harmonic maps and morphisms

We propose a new notion called \emph{infinity-harmonic maps}between Riemannain manifolds. These are natural generalizations of the well known notion of infinity harmonic functions and are also the limiting case of $p$% -harmonic maps as $p\to \infty $. Infinity harmoncity appears in many familiar contexts. For example, metric projection onto the orbit of an isometric group action from a tubular neighborhood is infinity harmonic. Unfortunately, infinity-harmonicity is not preserved under composition. Those infinity harmonic maps that always preserve infinity harmonicity under pull back are called infinity harmonic morphisms. We show that infinity harmonic morphisms are precisely horizontally homothetic mas. Many example of infinity-harmonic maps are given, including some very important and well-known classes of maps between Riemannian manifolds.

On f-harmonic morphisms between Riemannian manifolds

f-Harmonic maps were first introduced and studied by Lichnerowicz in \cite{Li} (see also Section 10.20 in Eells-Lemaire's report \cite{EL}). In this paper, we study a subclass of f-harmonic maps called f-harmonic morphisms which pull back local harmonic functions to local f-harmonic functions. We prove that a map between Riemannian manifolds is an f-harmonic morphism if and only if it is a horizontally weakly conformal f-harmonic map. This generalizes the well-known Fuglede-Ishihara characterization for harmonic morphisms. Some properties and many examples as well as some non-existence of f-harmonic morphisms are given. We also study the f-harmonicity of conformal immersions.

Biharmonic maps in two dimensions

Biharmonic maps between surfaces are studied in this paper. We compute the bitension field of a map between surfaces with conformal metrics in complex coordinates. As applications, we show that a linear map from Euclidean plane into $(\mathbb{R}^2, σ^2dwd\bar w)$ is always biharmonic if the conformal factor $σ$ is bi-analytic; we construct a family of such $ σ$, and we give a classification of linear biharmonic maps between $2$-spheres. We also study biharmonic maps between surfaces with warped product metrics. This includes a classification of linear biharmonic maps between hyperbolic planes and some constructions of many proper biharmonic maps into a circular cone or a helicoid.

Biharmonic Riemannian submersions from 3-manifolds

An important theorem about biharmonic submanifolds proved independently by Chen-Ishikawa [CI] and Jiang [Ji] states that an isometric immersion of a surface into 3-dimensional Euclidean space is biharmonic if and only if it is harmonic (i.e, minimal). In a later paper [CMO2], Cadeo-Monttaldo-Oniciuc shown that the theorem remains true if the target Euclidean space is replaced by a 3-dimensional hyperbolic space form. In this paper, we prove the dual results for Riemannian submersions, i.e., a Riemannian submersion from a 3-dimensional space form of non-positive curvature into a surface is biharmonic if and only if it is harmonic.

Biharmonic hypersurfaces in Riemannian manifolds

We study biharmonic hypersurfaces in a generic Riemannian manifold. We first derive an invariant equation for such hypersurfaces generalizing the biharmonic hypersurface equation in space forms studied in \cite{Ji2}, \cite{CH}, \cite{CMO1}, \cite{CMO2}. We then apply the equation to show that the generalized Chen's conjecture is true for totally umbilical biharmonic hypersurfaces in an Einstein space, and construct a (2-parameter) family of conformally flat metrics and a (4-parameter) family of multiply warped product metrics each of which turns the foliation of an upper-half space of $\mathhbb{R}^m$ by parallel hyperplanes into a foliation with each leave a proper biharmonic hypersurface. We also characterize proper biharmonic vertical cylinders in $S^2\times \mathbb{R}$ and $H^2\times \mathbb{R}$.
