Excitons in two-dimensional atomic layer materials from time-dependent density functional theory

Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) has been applied to the calculation of absorption spectra for two-dimensional atomic layer materials. We reveal that the character of the first bright exciton state of bi-layer hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is dependent on the layer stacking type through the use of many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) calculations, i.e., the electron and hole in the AA$'$ stacking are present in the same layer (intralayer exciton) while the A$'$B stacking exhibits an interlayer exciton. We demonstrate that the TDDFT approach with the meta-generalized gradient approximation to the exchange-correlation (XC) potential, and the Bootstrap XC kernel can capture the absorption peaks that correspond to these excitons without computationally heavy GW and Bethe-Salpeter equation calculations. We also show that the TDDFT method provides the absorption spectra for mono-layer transition metal dichalcogenides, MoS$_2$ and MoSe$_2$. This study confirms the validity of the TDDFT approach for the first investigation of the optical properties of complex two-dimensional atomic layer materials to which the MBPT calculation can not be readily applied.

Machine Learning Exchange-Correlation Potential in Time Dependent Density Functional Theory

We propose a machine learning based approach to develop the exchange-correlation potential of time dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). The neural network projection from the time-varying electron densities to the corresponding correlation potentials in the time-dependent Kohn-Sham equation is trained using a few exact datasets for a model system of electron-hydrogen scattering. We demonstrate that this neural network potential can capture the complex structures in the time-dependent correlation potential during the scattering process and provide correct scattering probabilities, which are not obtained by the standard adiabatic functionals. We also show that it is possible to incorporate the nonadiabatic (or memory) effect in the potential with this machine learning technique, which significantly improves the accuracy of the dynamics. The method developed here offers a novel way to improve the exchange-correlation potential of TDDFT, which makes the theory a more powerful tool to study various excited state phenomena.

Simulation of a Hydrogen Atom in Laser Field Using the Time-Dependent Variational Principle

The time-dependent variational principle is used to optimize the linear and nonlinear parameters of Gaussian basis functions to solve the time-dependent Schrodinger equation in 1 and 3 dimensions for a one-body soft Coulomb potential in a laser field. The accuracy is tested comparing the solution to finite difference grid calculations using several examples. The approach is not limited to one particle systems and the example presented for two electrons demonstrates the potential to tackle larger systems using correlated basis functions.

Bohmian mechanics in the exact factorization of electron-nuclear wavefunction

The exact factorization of an electron-nuclear wavefunction [A. Abedi, N. T. Maitra, and E. K. U. Gross, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 123002 (2010)] allows us to define the rigorous nuclear time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE) with a time-dependent potential-energy surface (TDPES) that fully accounts for the coupling to the electronic motion and drives the nuclear wavepacket dynamics. Here, we study whether the propagation of multiple classical trajectories can reproduce the quantum nuclear motion in strong-field processes when their motions are governed by the quantum Hamilton-Jacobi equation derived by applying Bohmian mechanics to this exact nuclear TDSE. We demonstrate that multiple classical trajectories propagated by the force from the gradient of the exact TDPES plus the Bohmian quantum potential can reproduce the strong-field dissociation dynamics of a one-dimensional model of the H$_2^+$ molecule. Our results show that the force from the Bohmian quantum potential plays a non-negligible role in yielding quantum nuclear dynamics in the strong-field process studied here, where ionization and/or splitting of nuclear probability density occurs.

Laser-induced electron localization in H$_2^+$: Mixed quantum-classical dynamics based on the exact time-dependent potential energy surface

We study the exact nuclear time-dependent potential energy surface (TDPES) for laser-induced electron localization with a view to eventually developing a mixed quantum-classical dynamics method for strong-field processes. The TDPES is defined within the framework of the exact factorization [A. Abedi, N. T. Maitra, and E. K. U. Gross, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 123002 (2010)] and contains the exact effect of the couplings to the electronic subsystem and to any external fields within a scalar potential. We compare its features with those of the quasistatic potential energy surfaces (QSPES) often used to analyse strong-field processes. We show that the gauge-independent component of the TDPES has a mean-field-like character very close to the density-weighted average of the QSPESs. Oscillations in this component are smoothened out by the gauge-dependent component, and both components are needed to yield the correct force on the nuclei. Once the localization begins to set in, the gradient of the exact TDPES tracks one QSPES and then switches to the other, similar to the description provided by surface-hopping between QSPESs. We show that evolving an ensemble of classical nuclear trajectories on the exact TDPES accurately reproduces the exact dynamics. This study suggests that the mixed quantum-classical dynamics scheme based on evolving multiple classical nuclear trajectories on the exact TDPES will be a novel and useful method to simulate strong field processes.

The exact forces on classical nuclei in non-adiabatic charge transfer

The decomposition of electronic and nuclear motion presented in~[A. Abedi, N. T. Maitra, and E. K. U. Gross, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 123002 (2010)] yields a time-dependent potential that drives the nuclear motion and fully accounts for the coupling to the electronic subsystem. Here we show that propagation of an ensemble of independent classical nuclear trajectories on this exact potential yields dynamics that are essentially indistinguishable from the exact quantum dynamics for a model non-adiabatic charge transfer problem. We point out the importance of step and bump features in the exact potential that are critical in obtaining the correct splitting of the quasiclassical nuclear wave packet in space after it passes through an avoided crossing between two Born-Oppenheimer surfaces, and analyze their structure. Lastly, an analysis of the exact potentials in the context of trajectory surface hopping procedure is presented, including preliminary investigations of velocity-adjustment, and the force-induced decoherence effect.

Exact Electronic Potentials in Coupled Electron-Ion Dynamics

We develop a novel approach to the coupled motion of electrons and ions that focuses on the dynamics of the electronic subsystem. Usually the description of electron dynamics involves an electronic Schrödinger equation where the nuclear degrees of freedom appear as parameters or as classical trajectories. Here we derive the exact Schrödinger equation for the subsystem of electrons, staying within a full quantum treatment of the nuclei. This exact Schrödinger equation features a time-dependent potential energy surface for electrons (e-TDPES). We demonstrate that this exact e-TDPES differs significantly from the electrostatic potential produced by classical or quantum nuclei.

Mixed quantum-classical dynamics on the exact time-dependent potential energy surface: A fresh look at non-adiabatic processes

The exact nuclear time-dependent potential energy surface arises from the exact decomposition of electronic and nuclear motion, recently presented in [A. Abedi, N. T. Maitra, and E. K. U. Gross, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 123002 (2010)]. Such time-dependent potential drives nuclear motion and fully accounts for the coupling to the electronic subsystem. We investigate the features of the potential in the context of electronic non-adiabatic processes and employ it to study the performance of the classical approximation on nuclear dynamics. We observe that the potential, after the nuclear wave-packet splits at an avoided crossing, develops dynamical steps connecting different regions, along the nuclear coordinate, in which it has the same slope as one or the other adiabatic surface. A detailed analysis of these steps is presented for systems with different non-adiabatic coupling strength. The exact factorization of the electron-nuclear wave-function is at the basis of the decomposition. In particular, the nuclear part is the true nuclear wave-function, solution of a time-dependent Schroedinger euqation and leading to the exact many-body density and current density. As a consequence, the Ehrenfest theorem can be extended to the nuclear subsystem and Hamiltonian, as discussed here with an analytical derivation and numerical results.

Steps in the exact time-dependent potential energy surface

We study the exact Time-Dependent Potential Energy Surface (TDPES) in the presence of strong non-adiabatic coupling between the electronic and nuclear motion. The concept of the TDPES emerges from the exact factorization of the full electron-nuclear wave-function [A. Abedi, N. T. Maitra, and E. K. U. Gross, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{105}, 123002 (2010)]. Employing a 1D model-system, we show that the TDPES exhibits a dynamical step that bridges between piecewise adiabatic shapes. We analytically investigate the position of the steps and the nature of the switching between the adiabatic pieces of the TDPES.
