Rank Dynamics for Functional Data

The study of the dynamic behavior of cross-sectional ranks over time for functional data and the ranks of the observed curves at each time point and their temporal evolution can yield valuable insights into the time dynamics of functional data. This approach is of interest in various application areas. For the analysis of the dynamics of ranks, estimation of the cross-sectional ranks of functional data is a first step. Several statistics of interest for ranked functional data are proposed. To quantify the evolution of ranks over time, a model for rank derivatives is introduced, where rank dynamics are decomposed into two components. One component corresponds to population changes and the other to individual changes that both affect the rank trajectories of individuals. The joint asymptotic normality for suitable estimates of these two components is established. The proposed approaches are illustrated with simulations and three longitudinal data sets: Growth curves obtained from the Zürich Longitudinal Growth Study, monthly house price data in the US from 1996 to 2015 and Major League Baseball offensive data for the 2017 season.

Towards Randomized Testing of $q$-Monomials in Multivariate Polynomials

Given any fixed integer $q\ge 2$, a $q$-monomial is of the format $\displaystyle x^{s_1}_{i_1}x^{s_2}_{i_2}...x_{i_t}^{s_t}$ such that $1\le s_j \le q-1$, $1\le j \le t$. $q$-monomials are natural generalizations of multilinear monomials. Recent research on testing multilinear monomials and $q$-monomails for prime $q$ in multivariate polynomials relies on the property that $Z_q$ is a field when $q\ge 2 $ is prime. When $q>2$ is not prime, it remains open whether the problem of testing $q$-monomials can be solved in some compatible complexity. In this paper, we present a randomized $O^*(7.15^k)$ algorithm for testing $q$-monomials of degree $k$ that are found in a multivariate polynomial that is represented by a tree-like circuit with a polynomial size, thus giving a positive, affirming answer to the above question. Our algorithm works regardless of the primality of $q$ and improves upon the time complexity of the previously known algorithm for testing $q$-monomials for prime $q>7$.

Enhanced Gas-Flow-Induced Voltage in Graphene

We show by systemically experimental investigation that gas-flow-induced voltage in monolayer graphene is more than twenty times of that in bulk graphite. Examination over samples with sheet resistances ranging from 307 to 1600 Ω/sq shows that the induced voltage increase with the resistance and can be further improved by controlling the quality and doping level of graphene. The induced voltage is nearly independent of the substrate materials and can be well explained by the interplay of Bernoulli's principle and the carrier density dependent Seebeck coefficient. The results demonstrate that graphene has great potential for flow sensors and energy conversion devices.
