Enhancement of giant magnetoelectric effect in Ni-doped CaBaCo$_{4}$O$_{7}$

The polar magnet CaBaCo$_{4}$O$_{7}$ is known to exhibit the largest magnetic-field-driven electric polarization change ($ΔP$) associated with an antiferromagnetic (AFM)-ferrimagnetic (FIM) transition in a narrow temperature range between 62 and 69 K. In this work, we investigate the effect of Ni doping on its multiferroic properties, by means of magnetization, electric polarization, dielectric constant, and magnetostriction measurements on single crystals of CaBaCo$_{3.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$O$_{7}$ up to 50 T. In the doped material, two kinds of AFM phases appear below 78 K, accompanying negative $ΔP$. Upon the application of a magnetic field along any crystallographic axis, giant positive $ΔP$ of up to $11 \sim 12$ mC/m$^{2}$ is observed along with an AFM-FIM transition in the whole temperature range below 78 K. The giant magnetoelectric effect inherent in CaBaCo$_{4}$O$_{7}$ can be further enhanced just by a small amount of chemical substitution, in terms of (i) increasing the magnitude of $ΔP$ and (ii) expanding the temperature range in which giant $ΔP$ appears.

Field-induced valence fluctuation in YbB$_{12}$

We performed high-magnetic-field ultrasonic experiments on YbB$_{12}$ up to 59 T to investigate the valence fluctuations in Yb ions. In zero field, the longitudinal elastic constant $C_{11}$, the transverse elastic constants $C_{44}$ and $\left( C_{11} - C_{12} \right)/2$, and the bulk modulus $C_\mathrm{B}$ show a hardening with a change of curvature at around 35 K indicating a small contribution of valence fluctuations to the elastic constants. When high magnetic fields are applied at low temperatures, $C_\mathrm{B}$ exhibits a softening above a field-induced insulator-metal transition signaling field-induced valence fluctuations. Furthermore, at elevated temperatures, the field-induced softening of $C_\mathrm{B}$ takes place at even lower fields and $C_\mathrm{B}$ decreases continuously with field. Our analysis using the multipole susceptibility based on a two-band model reveals that the softening of $C_\mathrm{B}$ originates from the enhancement of multipole-strain interaction in addition to the decrease of the insulator energy gap. This analysis indicates that field-induced valence fluctuations of Yb cause the instability of the bulk modulus $C_\mathrm{B}$.

Particle-hole symmetry breaking in a spin-dimer system TlCuCl$_3$ observed at 100 T

The entire magnetization process of TlCuCl$_3$ has been experimentally investigated up to 100 T employing the single-turn technique. The upper critical field $H_{c2}$ is observed to be 86.1 T at 2 K. A convex slope of the $M$-$H$ curve between the lower and upper critical fields ($H_{c1}$ and $H_{c2}$) is clearly observed, which indicates that a particle-hole symmetry is broken in TlCuCl$_3$. By quantum Monte Carlo simulation and the bond-operator theory method, we find that the particle-hole symmetry breaking results from strong inter-dimer interactions.

Physical properties of liquid oxygen under ultrahigh magnetic fields

We studied the acoustic properties of liquid oxygen up to 90 T by means of ultrasound measurements. We observed a monotonic decrease of the sound velocity and an asymptotic increase of the sound attenuation when applying magnetic fields. The unusual attenuation, twenty times as large as the zero-field value, suggests strong fluctuations of the local molecular arrangement. We point out that the observed fluctuations are related to a liquid-liquid transition or crossover, from a small-magnetization to a large-magnetization liquid, which is characterized by a local-structure rearrangement. To investigate higher-field properties of liquid oxygen, we performed single-turn-coil experiments up to 180 T by means of the acoustic, dilatometric, magnetic, and optical techniques. We observed only monotonic changes of these properties, reflecting the absence of the proposed liquid-liquid transition in our experimental conditions.

Magnetization of SrCu2(BO3)2 in ultrahigh magnetic fields up to 118 T

The magnetization process of the orthogonal-dimer antiferromagnet SrCu2(BO3)2 is investigated in high magnetic fields of up to 118 T. A 1/2 plateau is clearly observed in the field range 84 to 108 T in addition to 1/8, 1/4 and 1/3 plateaux at lower fields. Using a combination of state-of-the-art numerical simulations, the main features of the high-field magnetization, a 1/2 plateau of width 24 T, a 1/3 plateau of width 34 T, and no 2/5 plateau, are shown to agree quantitatively with the Shastry-Sutherland model if the ratio of inter- to intra-dimer exchange interactions J'/J=0.63. It is further predicted that the intermediate phase between the 1/3 and 1/2 plateau is not uniform but consists of a 1/3 supersolid followed by a 2/5 supersolid and possibly a domain-wall phase, with a reentrance into the 1/3 supersolid above the 1/2 plateau.

Precise Measurement of a Magnetic Field Generated by the Electromagnetic Flux Compression Technique

The precision of the values of a magnetic field generated by electromagnetic flux compression was investigated in ultra-high magnetic fields of up to 700 T. In an attempt to calibrate the magnetic field measured by pickup coils, precise Faraday rotation (FR) measurements were conducted on optical (quartz and crown) glasses. A discernible "turn-around" phenomenon was observed in the FR signal as well as the pickup coils before the end of a liner implosion. We found that the magnetic field measured by pickup coils should be corrected by taking into account the high-frequency response of the signal transmission line. Near the peak magnetic field, however, the pickup coils failed to provide reliable values, leaving the FR measurement as the only method to precisely measure an extremely high magnetic fields.

Synchrotron X-ray Spectroscopy Study on the Valence State in alpha- and beta-YbAlB4 at Low Temperatures and High Magnetic Fields

The valence state of Yb ions in beta-YbAlB4 and its polymorph alpha-YbAlB4 has been investigated by using X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy in SPring-8 at temperatures from 2 to 280 K. The observed Yb valence is 2.78 +- 0.01 in beta-YbAlB4 at 2 K by using the X-ray emission spectroscopy. The valence is found to gradually increase with increasing temperature toward the trivalent state, and the characteristic temperature of the valence fluctuation is expected to be about 290 K. We also found a small increase in the Yb valence (~0.002) by applying a magnetic field of 32 T at 40 K to beta-YbAlB4.

Suppression of f-Electron Itinerancy in CeRu2Si2 by a Strong Magnetic Field

The valence state of Ce in a canonical heavy fermion compound CeRu2Si2 has been investigated by synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy at 1.8 K in high magnetic fields of up to 40 T. The valence was slightly larger than for the pure trivalent state (Ce3+: f1), as expected in heavy fermion compounds, and it decreased toward the trivalent state as the magnetic field was increased. The field-induced valence reduction indicates that the itinerant character of the 4f electrons in CeRu2Si2 was suppressed by a strong magnetic field. The suppression was gradual and showed characteristic magnetic field dependence, which reflects the metamagnetism around Hm \sim 8 T. The itinerant character persisted, even at 40 T (\sim 5Hm), suggesting that the Kondo bound state is continuously broken by magnetic fields and that it should completely collapse at fields exceeding 200 T.

Magnetoelastics of a spin liquid: X-ray diffraction studies of Tb2Ti2O7 in pulsed magnetic fields

We report high resolution single crystal x-ray diffraction measurements of the frustrated pyrochlore magnet Tb2Ti2O7, collected using a novel low temperature pulsed magnet system. This instrument allows characterization of structural degrees of freedom to temperatures as low as 4.4 K, and in applied magnetic fields as large as 30 Tesla. We show that Tb2Ti2O7 manifests intriguing structural effects under the application of magnetic fields, including strongly anisotropic giant magnetostriction, a restoration of perfect pyrochlore symmetry in low magnetic fields, and ultimately a structural phase transition in high magnetic fields. It is suggested that the magnetoelastic coupling thus revealed plays a significant role in the spin liquid physics of Tb2Ti2O7 at low temperatures.

High-field magnetization of a two dimensional spin frustration system Ni$_{5}$(TeO$_{3}$)$_{4}$X$_{2}$ (X = Br and Cl)

High-field magnetization, M($H$), on Ni$_{5}$(TeO$_{3}$)$_{4}$X$_{2}$ (X = Br and Cl) were measured by using a pulse magnet. These compounds have a two dimensional crystal structure and a distorted kagome spin frustrated system which is builded by the Ni$^{2+}$ ions ($\textbf{S}$ = 1). The Néel transition temperatures are $T_{N} \sim$ 28 and 23 K for X = Br and Cl, respectively. When $T < T_{N}$, we observed a step-like transition at $H_{c} \sim$ 11 and 10 T for X = Br and Cl, respectively. On the other hand, at $T > T_{N}$, the field-dependent magnetization curves behaved like a monotonically increasing straight line up to 55 T. The $H_{c}$ value is close to those obtained by previous spin resonance studies in which a model of spin-flop scenario was proposed to explain the field-dependent resonance spectra. Their model predicts a further transition at around 23 T, however, our observations did not show any plateau behaviors, saturation or other anomalies up to 55 T, suggesting that the further transition possibly exists at a much higher field region.
