Peculiar disk behaviors of the black hole candidate MAXI J1348-630 in the hard state observed by Insight-HXMT and Swift

We present a spectral study of the black hole candidate MAXI J1348-630 during its 2019 outburst, based on monitoring observations with Insight-HXMT and Swift. Throughout the outburst, the spectra are well fitted with power-law plus disk-blackbody components. In the soft-intermediate and soft states, we observed the canonical relation L ~ T_in^4 between disk luminosity L and peak colour temperature T_in, with a constant inner radius R_in (traditionally identified with the innermost stable circular orbit). At other stages of the outburst cycle, the behaviour is more unusual, inconsistent with the canonical outburst evolution of black hole transients. In particular, during the hard rise, the apparent inner radius is smaller than in the soft state (and increasing), and the peak colour temperature is higher (and decreasing). This anomalous behaviour is found even when we model the spectra with self-consistent Comptonization models, which take into account the up-scattering of photons from the disk component into the power-law component. To explain both those anomalous trends at the same time, we suggest that the hardening factor for the inner disk emission was larger than the canonical value of ~1.7 at the beginning of the outburst. A more physical trend of radii and temperature evolution requires a hardening factor evolving from ~3.5 at the beginning of the hard state to ~1.7 in the hard intermediate state. This could be evidence that the inner disk was in the process of condensing from the hot, optically thin medium and had not yet reached a sufficiently high optical depth for its emission spectrum to be described by the standard optically-thick disk solution.

Accretion Torque Reversals in GRO J1008-57 Revealed by Insight-HXMT

GRO J1008-57, as a Be/X-ray transient pulsar, is considered to have the highest magnetic field in known neutron star X-ray binary systems. Observational data of the X-ray outbursts in GRO J1008-57 from 2017 to 2020 were collected by the Insight-HXMT satellite. In this work, the spin period of the neutron star in GRO J1008-57 was determined to be about 93.28 seconds in August 2017, 93.22 seconds in February 2018, 93.25 seconds in June 2019 and 93.14 seconds in June 2020. GRO J1008-57 evolved in the spin-up process with a mean rate of $-(2.10\pm 0.05)\times$10$^{-4}$ s/d from 2009 -- 2018, and turned into a spin down process with a rate of $(6.7\pm 0.6)\times$10$^{-5}$ s/d from Feb 2018 to June 2019. During the type II outburst of 2020, GRO J1008-57 had the spin-up torque again. During the torque reversals, the pulse profiles and continuum X-ray spectra did not change significantly, and the cyclotron resonant scattering feature around 80 keV was only detected during the outbursts in 2017 and 2020. Based on the observed mean spin-up rate, we estimated the inner accretion disk radius in GRO J1008-57 (about 1 - 2 times of the Alfvén radius) by comparing different accretion torque models of magnetic neutron stars. During the spin-down process, the magnetic torque should dominate over the matter accreting inflow torque, and we constrained the surface dipole magnetic field $B\geq 6\times 10^{12}$ G for the neutron star in GRO J1008-57, which is consistent with the magnetic field strength obtained by cyclotron line centroid energy.

An Explanation for 13 consecutive days activities of Mrk 421

It is surprising to find a fact for migration in the peak positions of synchrotron spectra energy distribution component during in the activity epochs of Mrk 421, accompanying with an orphan flaring at the X-ray and GeV-TeV $γ$-ray bands. A geometric interpretation and standard shock or stochastic acceleration models of blazar emission have difficulty reproducing these observed behaviours. The present paper introduces a linear acceleration by integrating the reconnection electric field into the particle transport model for the observed behaviours of Mrk 421. We note that the strong evidence for evolution of multi-wavelength spectral energy distribution characteristic by shifting the peak frequency, accompanying with an orphan flaring at the X-ray and GeV-TeV $γ$-ray bands provides an important electrostatic acceleration diagnostic in blazar jet. Assuming suitable model parameters, we apply the results of the simulation to the 13-day flaring event in 2010 March of Mrk 421, concentrating on the evolution of multi-wavelength spectral energy distribution characteristic by shifting the peak frequency. It is clear that the ratio of the electric field and magnetic field strength plays an important role in temporal evolution of the peak frequency of synchrotron spectral energy distribution component. We suggest the electrostatic acceleration responsible for the evolution of multi-wavelength spectral energy distribution characteristic by shifting the peak frequency is reasonable. Based on the model results, we issue that the peak frequency of the synchrotron spectral energy distribution component may denote a temporary characteristic of blazars, rather than a permanent one.

Establishing a particle distribution for multi-wavelength emission from BL Lac objects

Electrons are accelerated at the shock wave diffuse and advect outward, and subsequently drift away into the emitting region of the jet that is located in the downstream flow from the plane shock. The current work considers the acceleration of the electrons in the shock front. Assuming a proper boundary condition at the interface between the shock and the downstream zones, a novel particle distribution in the downstream flow is proposed in this work to reproduce the broadband spectral energy distribution of BL Lac objects. We find that (1) we can obtain the particle distribution downstream of the shock wave in four cases; (2) electrons with higher energy ($γ>γ_{0}$) dominate the emission spectrum; (3) the distinctly important physical parameters assumed in our model can reasonably reproduce the multi-wavelength spectrum of the high-synchrotron-peaked BL Lac object Markarian 421 (Mrk 421).

Insight-HXMT firm detection of the highest energy fundamental cyclotron resonance scattering feature in the spectrum of GRO J1008-57

We report on the observation of the accreting pulsar GRO J1008-57 performed by Insight-HXMT at the peak of the source's 2017 outburst. Pulsations are detected with a spin period of 93.283(1) s. The pulse profile shows double peaks at soft X-rays, and only one peak above 20 keV. The spectrum is well described by the phenomenological models of X-ray pulsars. A cyclotron resonant scattering feature is detected with very high statistical significance at a centroid energy of $E_{\rm cyc}=90.32_{-0.28}^{+0.32}$ keV, for the reference continuum and line models, HIGHECUT and GABS respectively. Detection is very robust with respect to different continuum models. The line energy is significantly higher than what suggested from previous observations, which provided very marginal evidence for the line. This establishes a new record for the centroid energy of a fundamental cyclotron resonant scattering feature observed in accreting pulsars. We also discuss the accretion regime of the source during the Insight-HXMT observation.

Insight-HXMT insight into switch of the accretion mode: the case of the X-ray pulsar 4U 1901+03

We use the In data collected during the 2019 outburst from X-ray pulsar 4U 1901+03 to complement the orbital parameters reported by Fermi/GBM. Using the Insight-HXMT, we examine the correlation between the derivative of the intrinsic spin frequency and bolometric flux based on accretion torque models. It was found that the pulse profiles significantly evolve during the outburst. The existence of two types of the profile's pattern discovered in the Insight-HXMT data indicates that this source experienced transition between a super-critical and a sub-critical accretion regime during its 2019 outburst. Based on the evolution of the pulse profiles and the torque model, we derive the distance to 4U 1901+03 as 12.4+-0.2 kpc.

Insight-HXMT observations of a possible fast transition from jet to wind dominated state during a huge flare of GRS~1915+105

We present the analysis of the brightest flare that was recorded in the \emph{Insight}-HMXT data set, in a broad energy range (2$-$200 keV) from the microquasar GRS~1915+105 during an unusual low-luminosity state. This flare was detected by \emph{Insight}-HXMT among a series of flares during 2 June 2019 UTC 16:37:06 to 20:11:36, with a 2-200 keV luminosity of 3.4$-$7.27$\times10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Basing on the broad-band spectral analysis, we find that the flare spectrum shows different behaviors during bright and faint epochs. The spectrum of the flare can be fitted with a model dominated by a power-law component. Additional components show up in the bright epoch with a hard tail and in the faint epoch with an absorption line $\sim$ 6.78 keV. The reflection component of the latter is consistent with an inner disk radius $\sim$ 5 times larger than that of the former. These results on the giant flare during the "unusual" low-luminosity state of GRS~1915+105 may suggest that the source experiences a possible fast transition from a jet-dominated state to a wind-dominated state. We speculate that the evolving accretion disk and the large-scale magnetic field may play important roles in this peculiar huge flare.

Joint Analysis of Energy and RMS Spectra from MAXI J1535-571 with Insight-HXMT

A new black hole X-ray binary (BHXRB) MAXI J1535-571 was discovered by MAXI during its outburst in 2017. Using observations taken by the first Chinese X-ray satellite, the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (dubbed as Insight-HXMT), we perform a joint spectral analysis (2-150 keV) in both energy and time domains. The energy spectra provide the essential input for probing the intrinsic Quasi-Periodic Oscillation (QPO) fractional rms spectra (FRS). Our results show that during the intermediate state, the energy spectra are in general consistent with those reported by Swift/XRT and NuSTAR. However, the QPO FRS become harder and the FRS residuals may suggest the presence of either an additional power-law component in the energy spectrum or a turn-over in the intrinsic QPO FRS at high energies.

Bethe-Heitler cascades as a plausible origin of hard spectra in distant TeV blazars

Context. Very high-energy (VHE) $γ$-ray measurements of distant TeV blazars can be nicely explained by TeV spectra induced by ultra high-energy cosmic rays. Aims. We develop a model for a plausible origin of hard spectra in distant TeV blazars. Methods. In the model, the TeV emission in distant TeV blazars is dominated by two mixed components. The first is the internal component with the photon energy around 1 TeV produced by inverse Compton scattering of the relativistic electrons on the synchrotron photons (SSC) with a correction for extragalactic background light absorbtion and the other is the external component with the photon energy more than 1 TeV produced by the cascade emission from high-energy protons propagating through intergalactic space. Results. Assuming suitable model parameters, we apply the model to observed spectra of distant TeV blazars of 1ES 0229+200. Our results show that 1) the observed spectrum properties of 1ES 0229+200, especially the TeV $γ$-ray tail of the observed spectra, could be reproduced in our model and 2) an expected TeV $γ$-ray spectrum with photon energy $>$1 TeV of 1ES 0229+200 should be comparable with the 50-hour sensitivity goal of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) and the differential sensitivity curve for the one-year observation with the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). Conclusions. We argue that strong evidence for the Bethe-Heitler cascades along the line of sight as a plausible origin of hard spectra in distant TeV blazars could be obtained from VHE observations with CTA, LHAASO, HAWC, and HiSCORE.

Discerning the $γ$-ray emitting region in the flat spectrum radio quasars

A model-dependent method is proposed to determine the location of the $γ$-ray emitting region for a given flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ). In the model, the extra-relativistic electrons are injected at the base of the jet and non-thermal photons are produced by both synchrotron radiation and inverse-Comtpon (IC) scattering in the energy dissipation region. The target photons dominating inverse-Comtpon scattering originate from both synchrotron photons and external ambient photon fields, and the energy density of external radiation field is a function of the distance between the position of dissipation region and a central super-massive black hole, and their spectra are seen in the comoving frame. Moreover, the energy dissipation region could be determined by the model parameter through reproducing the $γ$-ray spectra. Such a model is applied to reproduce the quasi-simultaneous multi-wavelength observed data for 36 FSRQs. In order to define the width of the broad-line region shell and dusty molecular torus shell, a simple numerical constraint is used to determine the outer boundary of the broad-line region and dusty molecular torus. Our results show that 1) the $γ$-ray emitting regions are located at the range from 0.1 pc to 10 pc; 2) the $γ$-ray emitting regions are located outside the broad-line regions and within the dusty molecular tori; and 3) the $γ$-ray emitting region are located closer to the dusty molecular torus ranges than the broad-line regions. Therefore, it may concluded that a direct evidence for the \emph{far site} scenario could be obtained on the basis of the model results.

Evidence for the Secondary Emission as the Origin of Hard Spectra in TeV Blazars

We develop a model for a possible origin of hard very high energy spectra from a distant blazar. In the model, both the primary photons produced in the source and secondary photons produced outside the source contribute to the observed high energy $γ$-rays emission. That is, the primary photons are produced in the source through the synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) process, and the secondary photons are produced outside the source through high energy protons interaction with the background photons along the line of sight. We apply the model to a characteristic case was the very high energy (VHE) $γ$-ray emissions in distant blazar 1ES 1101-232. Assuming a suitable electron and proton spectra, we obtain excellent fits to observed spectra of distant blazar 1ES 1101-232. This indicated that the surprisingly low attenuation of high energy $γ$-rays, especially for the shape of the very high energy $γ$-rays tail of the observed spectra, can be explained by secondary $γ$-rays produced in interactions of cosmic-ray protons with background photons in the intergalactic space.

Modelling the $γ$-ray variability of 3C 273

We investigate MeV-GeV $γ$-ray outbursts in 3C 273 in the frame of a time-dependent one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model. In this model, electrons are accelerated to extra-relativistic energy through the stochastic particle acceleration and evolve with the time, nonthermal photons are produced by both synchrotron and inverse Compton scattering of synchrotron photons. Moreover, nonthermal photons during a quiescent are produced by the relativistic electrons in the steady state and those during a outburst are produced by the electrons whose injection rate is changed at some time interval. We apply the model to two exceptionally luminous $γ$-ray outbursts observed by the Fermi-LAT from 3C 273 in September, 2009 and obtain the multi-wavelength spectra during the quiescent and during the outburst states, respectively. Our results show that the time-dependent properties of outbursts can be reproduced by adopting the appropriate injection rate function of the electron population.

Modelling the multi-wavelength emission of flat spectrum radio quasar 3C 279

We employ a length-dependent conical jet model for the jet structure and emission properties of flat spectrum radio quasar 3C 279 in the steady state. In the model, ultra-relativistic leptons are injected at the base of jet and propagate along the jet structure, non-thermal photons are produced by both synchrotron emission and inverse Comtpon scattering off synchrotron photons and external soft photons at each segment of jet. We derive the total energy spectra contribution through integrating every segment. We apply the model to the quasi-simultaneous multi-wavelength observed data of two quiescent epoches. Using the observed radio data of source, we determine the length of jet $L\sim 100$ pc, and magnetic field $B_{0}\sim 0.1-1$ G at the base of jet. Assuming a steady geometry of the jet structure and suitable physical parameters, we reproduce the multi-wavelength spectra during two quiescent observed epoches, respectively. Our results show that the initial $γ$-ray emission site takes place at $\sim 0.5$ pc from black hole.

Rapid TeV Flaring in Markarian 501

We investigate rapid TeV flaring in markarian 501 in the frame of a time-dependent one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model. Inthis model, electrons are accelerated to extra-relativistic energy through the stochastic particle acceleration and evolve with the time, nonthermal photons are produced by both synchrotron and inverse Comtpon scattering off synchrotron photons. Moreover, nonthermal photons during a pre-flare are produced by the relativistic electrons in the steady state and those during a flare are produced by the electrons whose injection rate is changed at some time interval. We apply the model to the rapid flare of Markarian 501 on July 9, 2005 and obtain the multi-wavelength spectra during the pre-flare and during the flare. Our results show that the time-dependent properties of flares can be reproduced by varying the injection rate of electrons and a clear canonical anti-clockwise-loop can be given.

X-ray and gamma-ray variability of Mrk 421

We present an ordinary case in the momentum diffusion equation for the electron spectrum evolution and investigate the energy spectra and time dependent properties of flare in Mrk 421 in the frame of a time-dependent one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model. In this model, electrons are accelerated to extra-relativistic energy through the strong magnetic turbulence and evolve with time, and non-thermal photons are produced by both synchrotron and inverse Comtpon scattering off synchrotron photons. Moreover, non-thermal photons during a pre-flare are produced by the relativistic electrons in the steady state and those during a flare are produced by the electrons whose injection rate is changed during some time interval. We apply the model to the energy spectra and time-dependent properties of flares in Mrk 421 by reproducing the pre-burst spectrum of the source and varying the injection rate in the Bohm diffusion (q=1) and the hard sphere approximation (q=2) case, respectively. Our results show that Bohm diffusion case leads to hard photon spectra, and hard sphere case approximation seems to reproduce the energy spectra and the time dependent properties of flare still better.

Variability and spectral variation of 3C 66A

3C 66A was monitored by the BATC(Beijing-Arizona-Taipei-Connecticut) telescope from 2005 to 2008,1994 observations were obtained on 89 nights. Detailed research and analysis was performed on these observations in this paper. A long term burst occurred in the whole light curve. No intra-day variability was claimed in our campaign by intra-night light curve analysis. Time lag of shorter wavelenth preceding longer wavelength was shown by correlation analysis. The results showed that the optical spectral shape turned flatter when the source brightened, and the spectral variability indicator was bigger on shorter time-scale as determined by the color indices variation analysis.
