Electronic structures and multi-orbital models of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ thin films at ambient pressure

The recent discovery of superconductivity with a transition temperature $T_c$ exceeding 40 K in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ and (La,Pr)$_{3}$Ni$_2$O$_7$ thin films at ambient pressure marks a significant breakthrough in the field of nickelate superconductors. Using density functional theory (DFT), we propose a double-stacked two-orbital effective model for La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ thin film based on the Ni$-e_g$ orbitals. Our analysis of the Fermi surface reveals three electron pockets ($α,α^{\prime},β$) and two hole pockets ($γ,γ^{\prime}$), where the additional $α^{\prime}$ and $γ^{\prime}$ pockets arise from inter-stack interactions. Furthermore, we introduce a high-energy model that incorporates O$-p$ orbitals to facilitate future studies. Calculations of spin susceptibility within the random phase approximation (RPA) indicate that magnetic correlations are enhanced by nesting of the $γ$ pocket, which is predominantly derived from the Ni$-d_{z^2}$ orbital. Our results provide a theoretical foundation for understanding the electronic and magnetic properties of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ thin films.

(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$)$_{5}$GeTe$_{2}$: an antiferromagnetic triangular Ising lattice with itinerant magnetism

Based on first-principles calculations, an antiferromagnetic Ising model on a triangular lattice has been proposed to interpret the order of Fe$(1)$-Ge pairs and the formation of $\sqrt{3}$ $\times $ $\sqrt{3}$ superstructures in the Fe$_5$GeTe$_2$ (F5GT), as well as to predict the existence of similar superstructures in Ni doped F5GT (Ni-F5GT). Our study suggests that F5GT systems may be considered as a structural realization of the well known antiferromagnetic Ising model on a triangular lattice. Based on the superstructures, a Heisenberg-Landau Hamiltonian, taking into account both Heisenberg interactions and longitudinal spin fluctuations, is implemented to describe magnetism in both F5GT and Ni-F5GT. We unveil that frustrated magnetic interactions associated with Fe(1), tuned by a tiny Ni doping ($x \leq 0.2 $), is responsible for the experimentally observed enhancement of the $T_c$ to 478 K in Ni-F5GT. Our calculations show that at low doping levels, monolayer Ni-F5GT has almost the same magnetic phase diagram as that of the bulk, which indicates a pervasive beyond room temperature ferromagnetism in this Ni doped two-dimensional system.

Interplay between Charge-Density-Wave, Superconductivity, and Ferromagnetism in CuIr2-xCrxTe4 Chalcogenides

We report the crystal structure, charge-density-wave (CDW), superconductivity (SC), and ferromagnetism (FM) in CuIr2-xCrxTe4 chalcogenides. Powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD) results reveal that CuIr2-xCrxTe4 series are distinguished between two structural types and three different regions: (i) layered trigonal structure region, (ii) mixed phase regions, (iii) spinel structure region. Besides, Cr substitution for Ir site results in rich physical properties including the collapse of CDW, the formation of dome-shaped like SC, and the emergence of magnetism. Cr doping slightly elevates the superconducting critical temperature (Tsc) to its highest Tsc = 2.9 K around x = 0.06. As x increases from 0.3 to 0.4, the ferromagnetic Curie temperature (Tc) increases from 175 to 260 K. However, the Tc remains unchanged in the spinel range from 1.9 to 2. This finding provides a comprehensive material platform for investigating the interplay between CDW, SC, and FM multipartite quantum states.

Enhanced superconductivity with possible re-appearance of charge density wave states in polycrystalline Cu$_{1-x}$Ag$_x$Ir$_2$Te$_4$ alloys

In this study, we determined the effect of doping with the noble metal Ag on Ir$_2$Te$_4$ superconductors. Based on the resistivity, magnetization, and heat capacity, we explored the changes in the superconductivity and charge density wave for Cu$_{1-x}$Ag$_x$Ir$_2$Te$_4$ as a function of isoelectric substitution. We assessed a complete set of competing states from suppressed charge density wave in the low doping region to superconductor in the middle doping region and re-entrant charge density wave in the high doping region, thereby obtaining an electronic phase diagram, where the superconducting dome was near bipartite charge density wave regions with a maximum superconducting temperature Tc of about 2.93 K at an Ag doping level of 12%. The lower H$_{c1}$ and upper H$_{c2}$ critical magnetic fields were determined for some representative samples in the Cu$_{1-x}$Ag$_x$Ir$_2$Te$_4$ series based on magnetization and resistivity measurements, respectively. We showed that H$_{c1}$ decreased whereas H$_{c2}$ increased as the doping content increased. The specific heat anomalies at the superconducting transitions $ΔC_{el}/γT_c$ for representative samples comprising Cu$_{0.92}$Ag$_{0.08}$Ir$_2$Te$_4$, Cu$_{0.88}$Ag$_{0.12}$Ir$_2$Te$_4$, and Cu$_{0.85}$Ag$_{0.15}$Ir$_2$Te$_4$ were approximately 1.40, 1.44, and 1.42, respectively, which are all near the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer value of 1.43 and they indicate bulk superconductivity in these compounds.
