Finite Element de Rham and Stokes Complexes in Three Dimensions

Finite element de Rham complexes and finite element Stokes complexes with various smoothness in three dimensions are systematically constructed. First smooth scalar finite elements in three dimensions are derived through a non-overlapping decomposition of the simplicial lattice. Based on the smooth scalar finite elements, both H(div)-conforming finite elements and H(curl)-conforming finite elements with various smoothness are devised, which induce the finite element de Rham complexes with various smoothness and the associated commutative diagrams. The div stability is established for the H(div)-conforming finite elements, and the exactness of these finite element complexes.

Finite elements for div and divdiv conforming symmetric tensors in arbitrary dimension

Several div-conforming and divdiv-conforming finite elements for symmetric tensors on simplexes in arbitrary dimension are constructed in this work. The shape function space is first split as the trace space and the bubble space. The later is further decomposed into the null space of the differential operator and its orthogonal complement. Instead of characterization of these subspaces of the shape function space, characterization of the dual spaces are provided. Vector div-conforming finite elements are firstly constructed as an introductory example. Then new symmetric div-conforming finite elements are constructed. The dual subspaces are then used as build blocks to construct divdiv conforming finite elements.

Nonconforming finite element Stokes complexes in three dimensions

Two nonconforming finite element Stokes complexes starting from the conforming Lagrange element and ending with the nonconforming $P_1$-$P_0$ element for the Stokes equation in three dimensions are constructed. And commutative diagrams are also shown by combining nonconforming finite element Stokes complexes and interpolation operators. The lower order $\boldsymbol H(\textrm{grad}\textrm{curl})$-nonconforming finite element only has $14$ degrees of freedom, whose basis functions are explicitly given in terms of the barycentric coordinates. The $\boldsymbol H(\textrm{grad}\textrm{curl})$-nonconforming elements are applied to solve the quad-curl problem, and optimal convergence is derived. By the nonconforming finite element Stokes complexes, the mixed finite element methods of the quad-curl problem are decoupled into two mixed methods of the Maxwell equation and the nonconforming $P_1$-$P_0$ element method for the Stokes equation, based on which a fast solver is discussed. Numerical results are provided to verify the theoretical convergence rates.

Robust mixed finite element methods for a quad-curl singular perturbation problem

Robust mixed finite element methods are developed for a quad-curl singular perturbation problem. Lower order H(grad curl)-nonconforming but H(curl)-conforming finite elements are constructed, which are extended to nonconforming finite element Stokes complexes and the associated commutative diagrams. Then H(grad curl)-nonconforming finite elements are employed to discretize the quad-curl singular perturbation problem, which possess the sharp and uniform error estimates with respect to the perturbation parameter. The Nitsche's technique is exploited to achieve the optimal convergence rate in the case of the boundary layers. Numerical results are provided to verify the theoretical convergence rates. In addition, the regularity of the quad-curl singular perturbation problem is established.

Finite elements for divdiv-conforming symmetric tensors

Two types of finite element spaces on triangles are constructed for div-div conforming symmetric tensors. Besides the normal-normal continuity, the stress tensor is continuous at vertices and another trace involving combination of derivatives of stress is identified. Polynomial complex, finite element complex, and Hilbert complex are presented and a commuting diagram between them is given. The constructed div-div conforming elements are exploited to discretize the mixed formulation of the biharmonic equation. Optimal order and superconvergence error analysis is provided. By rotation, finite elements for rot-rot conforming symmetric strain are also obtained.

Finite elements for divdiv-conforming symmetric tensors in three dimensions

Two types of finite element spaces on a tetrahedron are constructed for divdiv conforming symmetric tensors in three dimensions. The key tools of the construction are the decomposition of polynomial tensor spaces and the characterization of the trace operators. First, the divdiv Hilbert complex and its corresponding polynomial complexes are presented. Several decompositions of polynomial vector and tensors spaces are derived from the polynomial complexes. Then, traces for div-div operator are characterized through a Green's identity. Besides the normal-normal component, another trace involving combination of first order derivatives of the tensor is continuous across the face. Due to the smoothness of polynomials, the symmetric tensor element is also continuous at vertices, and on the plane orthogonal to each edge. Third, a finite element for sym curl-conforming trace-free tensors is constructed following the same approach. Finally, a finite element divdiv complex, as well as the bubble functions complex, in three dimensions are established.

Nonconforming Virtual Element Method for $2m$-th Order Partial Differential Equations in $\mathbb R^n$ with $m>n$

The $H^m$-nonconforming virtual elements of any order $k$ on any shape of polytope in $\mathbb R^n$ with constraints $m>n$ and $k\geq m$ are constructed in a universal way. A generalized Green's identity for $H^m$ inner product with $m>n$ is derived, which is essential to devise the $H^m$-nonconforming virtual elements. By means of the local $H^m$ projection and a stabilization term using only the boundary degrees of freedom, the $H^m$-nonconforming virtual element methods are proposed to approximate solutions of the $m$-harmonic equation. The norm equivalence of the stabilization on the kernel of the local $H^m$ projection is proved by using the bubble function technique, the Poincaré inquality and the trace inequality, which implies the well-posedness of the virtual element methods. The optimal error estimates for the $H^m$-nonconforming virtual element methods are achieved from an estimate of the weak continuity and the error estimate of the canonical interpolation. Finally, the implementation of the nonconforming virtual element method is discussed.

Fast Auxiliary Space Preconditioner for Linear Elasticity in Mixed Form

A block diagonal preconditioner with the minimal residual method and a block triangular preconditioner with the generalized minimal residual method are developed for Hu-Zhang mixed finite element methods of linear elasticity. They are based on a new stability result of the saddle point system in mesh-dependent norms. The mesh-dependent norm for the stress corresponds to the mass matrix which is easy to invert while the displacement it is spectral equivalent to Schur complement. A fast auxiliary space preconditioner based on the $H^1$ conforming linear element of the linear elasticity problem is then designed for solving the Schur complement. For both diagonal and triangular preconditioners, it is proved that the conditioning numbers of the preconditioned systems are bounded above by a constant independent of both the crucial Lamé constant and the mesh-size. Numerical examples are presented to support theoretical results. As byproducts, a new stabilized low order mixed finite element method is proposed and analyzed and superconvergence results of Hu-Zhang element are obtained.

Quasi-optimal convergence rate for an adaptive hybridizable C0 discontinuous Galerkin method for Kirchhoff plates

In this paper, we present an adaptive hybridizable $C^0$ discontinuous Galerkin (HCDG) method for Kirchhoff plates. A reliable and efficient a posteriori error estimator is produced for this HCDG method. Quasi-orthogonality and discrete reliability are established with the help of a postprocessed bending moment and the discrete Helmholtz decomposition. Based on these, the contraction property between two consecutive loops and complexity of the adaptive HCDG method are studied thoroughly. The key points in our analysis are a postprocessed normal-normal continuous bending moment from the HCDG method solution and a lifting of jump residuals from inter-element boundaries to element interiors.

Stabilized mixed finite element methods for linear elasticity on simplicial grids in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$

In this paper, we design two classes of stabilized mixed finite element methods for linear elasticity on simplicial grids. In the first class of elements, we use $\boldsymbol{H}(\mathbf{div}, Ω; \mathbb{S})$-$P_k$ and $\boldsymbol{L}^2(Ω; \mathbb{R}^n)$-$P_{k-1}$ to approximate the stress and displacement spaces, respectively, for $1\leq k\leq n$, and employ a stabilization technique in terms of the jump of the discrete displacement over the faces of the triangulation under consideration; in the second class of elements, we use $\boldsymbol{H}_0^1(Ω; \mathbb{R}^n)$-$P_{k}$ to approximate the displacement space for $1\leq k\leq n$, and adopt the stabilization technique suggested by Brezzi, Fortin, and Marini. We establish the discrete inf-sup conditions, and consequently present the a priori error analysis for them. The main ingredient for the analysis is two special interpolation operators, which can be constructed using a crucial $\boldsymbol{H}(\mathbf{div})$ bubble function space of polynomials on each element. The feature of these methods is the low number of global degrees of freedom in the lowest order case. We present some numerical results to demonstrate the theoretical estimates.
