A 6.4yr optical quasi-periodic oscillations in SDSS J075217.84+193542.2: a new candidate for central binary black hole system

In this manuscript, a 6.4yr optical quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) is detected in the quasar SDSS J075217.84+193542.2 (=\obj) at a redshift 0.117, of which 13.6yr-long light curve from CSS and ASAS-SN directly described by a sinusoidal function with a periodicity 6.4yr. The 6.4yr QPOs can be further confirmed through the Generalized Lomb-Scargle periodogram with confidence level higher than 99.99\%, and through the auto-correlation analysis results, and through the WWZ technique. The optical QPOs strongly indicate a central binary black hole (BBH) system in \obj. The determined two broad Gaussian components in the broad H$α$ can lead to the BBH system with expected space separation about 0.02pc between the expected two central BHs with determined virial BH masses about $8.8\times10^7{\rm M_\odot}$ and $1.04\times10^9{\rm M_\odot}$. Meanwhile, we check the disk precessions applied to explain the optical QPOs. However, under the disk precession assumption, the determined optical emission regions from central BH have sizes about $40{\rm R_G}$ two times smaller than sizes of the expected NUV emission regions through the correlation between disk size and BH mass, indicating the disk precessions are not preferred. And due to the lower radio loudness around 0.28, jet precessions can be also totally ruled out. Furthermore, only 0.08\% probability can determined as the QPOs mis-detected through light curves randomly created by the CAR process, re-confirming the reported optical QPOs.

About 300 days optical quasi-periodic oscillations in the long-term light curves of the blazar PKS 2155-304

Based on the long-term light curves collected from the Catalina Sky Survey (CSS) (from 2005 to 2013) and the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) (from 2014 to 2018), optical quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) about 300 days can be well determined in the well-known blazar PKS~2155-304 through four different methods: the generalized Lomb-Scargle periodogram (GLSP) method, the weighted wavelet Z-transform (WWZ) technique, the epoch-folded method and redfit method. The GLSP determined significance level for the periodicity is higher than 99.9999\% based on a false alarm probability. The redfit provided confidence level for the periodicity is higher than 99\% in ASAS-SN light curve, after considering the effects of red noise. Based on continuous autoregressive (CAR) process created artificial light curves, the probability of detecting fake QPOs is lower than 0.8\%. The determined optical periodicity of 300 days from CSS and ASAS-SN light curves is well consistent with the reported optical periodicity in the literature. Moreover, three possible models are discussed to explain the optical QPOs in PKS 2155-304: the relativistic Frame-dragging effect, the binary black hole (BBH) model and the jet precession model.

Dependence of NLRs sizes on [OIII] luminosity in low redshift AGN with double-peaked broad Balmer emission lines

In the manuscript, the simple but interesting results are reported on the upper limits of NLRs sizes of a small sample of 38 low redshift ($z<0.1$) AGN with double-peaked broad emission lines (double-peaked BLAGN), in order to check whether the NLRs sizes in type-1 AGN and type-2 AGN obey the similar empirical dependence on \o3~ luminosity. In order to correct the inclination effects on projected NLRs sizes of type-1 AGN, the accretion disk origin is commonly applied to describe the double-peaked broad H$α$ leading to the determined inclination angles of central disk-like BLRs of the 38 double-peaked BLAGN. Then, considering the fixed SDSS fiber radius, the upper limits of NLRs sizes of the 38 double-peaked BLAGN can be estimated. Meanwhile, the strong linear correlation between continuum luminosity and \o3~ luminosity is applied to confirm that the \o3~ emissions of the 38 double-peaked BLAGN are totally covered in the SDSS fibers. Considering the reddening corrected measured \o3~ luminosity, the upper limits of NLRs sizes of the 38 double-peaked BLAGN are within the 99.9999\% confidence interval of the expected results from the empirical relation between NLRs sizes and \o3~ luminosity in the type-2 AGN. In the current stage, there are no clues to challenge the Unified model of AGN, through the space properties of NLRs.

Long-term variability of the composite galaxy SDSS J103911-000057: A candidate of true Type-2 AGN

In the manuscript, the composite galaxy SDSS J103911-000057 (=SDSS J1039) is reported as a better candidate of true Type-2 AGN without hidden BLRs. None broad but only narrow emission lines detected in SDSS J1039 can be well confirmed both by the F-test technique and by the expected broad emission lines with EW smaller than 13.5Å~ with 99\% confidence level. Meanwhile, a reliable AGN power law component is preferred with confidence level higher than 7sigma in SDSS J1039. Furthermore, the long-term variability of SDSS J1039 from CSS can be well described by the DRW process with intrinsic variability timescale $τ\sim100{\rm days}$, similar as normal quasars. And, based on BH mass in SDSS J1039 through the msig relation and on the correlation between AGN continuum luminosity and total H$α$ luminosity, the expected broad H$α$, if there was, could be re-constructed with line width about $300-1000{\rm km~s^{-1}}$ and with line flux about $666\times10^{-17}{\rm erg~s^{-1}~cm^{-2}}$ under the Virialization assumption to BLRs, providing robust evidence to reject the probability that the intrinsic probable broad H$α$ were overwhelmed by noises of the SDSS spectrum in SDSS J1039. Moreover, the SDSS J1039 does follow the same correlation between continuum luminosity and [O~{\sc iii}] line luminosity as the one for normal broad line AGN, indicating SDSS J1039 classified as a changing-look AGN at dim state can be well ruled out. Therefore, under the current knowledge, SDSS J1039 is a better candidate of true Type-2 AGN.

SDSS J154751.94+025550 with double-peaked broad Hβbut single-peaked broad Hα: a candidate for central binary black hole system?

In this manuscript, an interesting blue Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) SDSS J154751.94+025550 (=SDSS J1547) is reported with very different line profiles of broad Balmer emission lines: double-peaked broad H$β$ but single-peaked broad H$α$. SDSS J1547 is the first AGN with detailed discussions on very different line profiles of the broad Balmer emission lines, besides the simply mentioned different broad lines in the candidate for a binary black hole (BBH) system in SDSS J0159+0105. The very different line profiles of the broad Balmer emission lines can be well explained by different physical conditions to two central BLRs in a central BBH system in SDSS J1547. Furthermore, the long-term light curve from CSS can be well described by a sinusoidal function with a periodicity about 2159days, providing further evidence to support the expected central BBH system in SDSS J1547. Therefore, it is interesting to treat different line profiles of broad Balmer emission lines as intrinsic indicators of central BBH systems in broad line AGN. Under assumptions of BBH systems, 0.125\% of broad line AGN can be expected to have very different line profiles of broad Balmer emission lines. Future study on more broad line AGN with very different line profiles of broad Balmer emission lines could provide further clues on the different line profiles of broad Balmer emission lines as indicator of BBH systems.

Properties of long-term optical variability of active galactic nuclei with double-peaked broad low-ionization emission lines

In this manuscript, we study properties of long-term optical variability of a large sample of 106 SDSS spectroscopically confirmed AGN with double-peaked broad low-ionization emission lines (double-peaked emitters). The long-term optical light curves over 8 years are collected from the Catalina Sky Surveys Data Release 2. And, the Damped Random Walk (DRW) process is applied to describe the long-term variability of the double-peaked emitters. Meanwhile, the same DRW process is applied to long-term optical light curves of more than 7000 spectroscopically confirmed normal quasars in the SDSS Stripe82 Database. Then, we can find that the DRW process determined rest-frame intrinsic variability timescales $\ln(τ/{\rm days})$ are about 5.8 and about 4.8 for the double-peaked emitters and for the normal quasars, respectively. The statistically longer intrinsic variability timescales can be confirmed in the double-peaked emitters, after considerations of necessary effects, such as the effects from different distributions of redshift, BH mass and accretion rate between the double-peaked emitters and the normal quasars. Moreover, a radial dependence of accretion rate $\dot{m}_{\rm R}~\propto~R^β$ with larger values of $β$ could be an acceptable interpretation of the longer intrinsic variability timescales in the double-peaked emitters. Therefore, there are different intrinsic properties of emission regions between the double-peaked emitters and the normal quasars. The double-peaked emitters can be well treated as an unique subclass of AGN.

Apparent \oiii variability in the narrow line Seyfert I Mrk142

In this letter, we checked spectral properties of the well-known narrow line Seyfert I Mrk142, in order to try to find effects of narrow line variability on BLR radius of Mrk142 which is an outlier in the R-L plane. Although, no improvement can be found on BLR radius, apparent narrow line variability can be confirmed in Mrk142. Using the public spectra collected from the Lick AGN Monitoring Project, the spectral scaling method based on assumption of constant \oiii line is firstly checked by examining broad and narrow emission line properties. We find that with the application of the spectral scaling method, there is a strong correlation between the \oiii line flux and the \oiii line width, but weaker correlations between the broad H$α$ flux and the broad H$β$ flux, and between the broad H$α$ flux and the continuum emission at 5100Å. The results indicate that the assumption of constant \oiii line is not preferred, and caution should be exercised when applying the spectral scaling calibration method. And then, we can find a strong correlation between the \oiii line flux and the continuum emission at 5100Å, which indicates apparent short-term variability of the \oiii line in Mrk142 over about two months.

SDSS J083253.18+064316.7: one strange object with double-peaked narrow Hαbut single-peaked narrow Hβ

In this letter, we firstly report one unique object SDSS J0832+0643 with particular features of narrow balmer emission lines: double-peaked narrow Hαbut single-peaked narrow Hβ. The particular features can not be expected by currently proposed kinematic models for double-peaked narrow emission lines, because the proposed kinematic models lead to similar line profiles of narrow balmer emission lines. However, due to radiative transfer effects, the non-kinematic model can be naturally applied to well explain the particular features of narrow balmer emission lines: larger optical depth in Hαthan 10 leads to observed double-peaked narrow Hα, but smaller optical depth in Hβaround 2 leads to observed single-peaked narrow Hβ. Therefore, SDSS J0832+0643 can be used as strong evidence to support the non-kinematic model for double-peaked narrow emission lines.

Are broad optical balmer lines from central accretion disk in PG 1613+658?

In this letter, we report positive correlations between broad line width and broad line flux for the broad balmer lines of the long-term observed AGN PG 1613+658. Rather than the expected negative correlations under the widely accepted virialization assumption for AGN BLRs, the positive correlations indicate much different BLR structures of PG 1613+658 from the commonly considered BLR structures which are dominated by the equilibrium between radiation pressure and gas pressure. Therefore, accretion disk origin is preferred for the observed broad single-peaked optical balmer lines of PG 1613+658, because of the mainly gravity dominated disk-like BLRs with radial structures having few effects from radiation pressure.

Further Evidence for the Accretion Disk Origination of the Double-Peaked Broad H$α$ of 3C390.3

In the letter, under the widely accepted theoretical accretion disk model for the double-peaked emitter 3C390.3, the extended disk-like BLR can be well split into ten rings, and then the time lags between the lines from the rings and the continuum emission are estimated, based on the observed spectra around 1995. We can find one much strong correlation between the determined time lags (in unit of light-day) and the flux weighted radii (in unit of ${\rm R_G}$) of the rings, which is well consistent with the expected results through the theoretical accretion disk model. Moreover, through the strong correlation, the black hole masses of 3C390.3 are independently estimated as $\sim10^9{\rm M_{\odot}}$, the same as the reported black hole masses in the literature. The consistencies provide further evidence to strongly support the accretion disk origination of the double-peaked broad balmer lines of 3C390.3.

More Evidence for the Intermediate Broad Line Region of the Mapped AGN PG 0052+251

In the manuscript, the properties of the proposed intermediate BLR are checked for the mapped AGN PG 0052+251. With the considerations of the apparent effects of the broad He {\sc ii} line on the observed broad H$β$ profile, the line parameters (especially the line width and the line flux) of the observed broad H$α$ and the broad H$β$ are carefully determined. Based on the measured line parameters, the model with two broad components applied for each observed broad balmer line is preferred, and then confirmed by the calculated much different time lags for the inner/intermediate broad components and the corresponding virial BH masses ratio determined by the properties of the inner and the intermediate broad components. Then, the correlation between the broad line width and the broad line flux is checked for the two broad components: one clearly strong negative correlation for the inner broad component, but one positive correlation for the intermediate broad component. The different correlations for the two broad components strongly support the intermediate BLR of PG0052+251.

Optical spectral index - luminosity relation for the 17 mapped Palomar-Green quasars

In this paper, the optical spectra index - luminosity relationship is checked for the well-known 17 individual mapped QSOs, in order to give one more clearer conclusion on the so far conflicting dependence of the spectral index on the luminosity for AGN. Different from the global relationships based on the color difference (photometry parameters) for samples of AGN, the more reliable relationship is determined for the multi-epoch observed individual mapped QSOs with no contamination from the host galaxies, the line variabilities and the much different central properties. The final confirmed results are as follows. (1): No strong dependence of the optical spectral index on the continuum luminosity can be found for all the 17 QSOs, besides two objects (PG 0026 and PG 1613) having some weak trends (with $3σ$ confidence level) for the relationship. In other words, the common sense 'AGNs get bluer when they get brighter' is not so common. (2): There are much different damped intrinsic variability time scales for the variability modes of the optical spectral index and the continuum emission, through the well applied Damped Random Walk method for the AGN variability. In other words, there are some different intrinsic mechanisms controlling the variabilities of the optical spectral index and the power law AGN continuum emission. Therefore, the much weak dependence of the optical spectral index on the continuum luminosity can be further confirmed.

Correlation between Line Width and Line Flux of Double-Peaked Broad Halpha of 3C390.3

In this manuscript, we carefully check the correlation between the line width and the line flux of the double-peaked broad H$α$ of the well-known mapped AGN 3C390.3, in order to show some further distinctions between double-peaked emitters and normal broad line AGN. Based on the Virialization assumption and the empirical relation about $R_{BLR}$, one strong negative correlation of line parameters of the double-peaked broad lines should be expected for 3C390.3, such as the negative correlation confirmed for the mapped broad line object NGC5548. But, based on the public spectra around 1995 from the AGNWATCH project for 3C390.3, one reliable positive correlation is found. In the context of the proposed theoretical accretion disk model for double-peaked emitters, the unexpected positive correlation can be naturally explained, due to different time delays for inner parts and outer parts of disk-like BLR of 3C390.3. Moreover, the Virialization assumption is checked and found to be still available for 3C390.3. However, time-varying size of the BLR of 3C390.3 can not be expected by the empirical relation $R_{BLR}\propto L^{\sim0.5}$, the continuum emission strengthening leads to the size of BLR decreasing (not increasing) in different moments for 3C390.3. Then, we compared our results of 3C390.3 with the previous results reported in the literature for the other double-peaked emitters, and found that before to clearly correct effects from disk physical parameters varying for long-term observed line spectra and effects from the probable 'external' ionizing source with so far unclear structures, it is hard to give one conclusion that the positive correlation can be found for all double-peaked emitters. However, once one positive correlation of broad line parameters was found, the accretion disk origination of the broad line should be firstly considered.

Obscured Binary Quasar Cores in SDSS J104807.74+005543.5?

We report the discovery of a possible close binary system of quasars in SDSS J1048+0055. The [OIII]4959,5007 emission lines are clearly double-peaked, and two discrete radio sources with a projected physical separation of ~20 pc are found in the VLBA milliarcsec resolution image at 8.4 GHz. Each of the [O III]4959,5007 doublets and Hbeta can be well modelled by two Gaussians and the line ratio, [O III]5007/Hbeta ~7, is typical of Seyfert 2 galaxies. No broad component of Hbeta was detected and its [O III]5007 luminosity, L_[OIII] ~ 9.2 times 10^42 erg s^-1, is comparable to luminous quasars and is a few ten times more luminous than typical Seyfert galaxies. One natural interpretation is that SDSS J1048+0055 contains two close quasar-like nuclei and the BLR around them are obscured. Other possible models are also discussed. We suggest that double-peaked narrow emission line profile may be an effective way of selecting candidates of binary black holes with intermediate separation.
