Beyond Position Bias: Shifting Context Compression from Position-Driven to Semantic-Driven

Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated exceptional performance across diverse tasks. However, their deployment in long-context scenarios faces high computational overhead and information redundancy. While soft prompt compression has emerged as a promising way to mitigate these costs by compressing sequences into compact embeddings, existing paradigms remain fundamentally constrained by position bias: they primarily rely on learnable tokens insertion at fixed positions or group tokens according to their physical token layout, thereby inducing performance instability and semantic fragmentation. To overcome this bottleneck, we propose Semantic Consistency Context Compression (SeCo), a method that shifts context compression from position-driven to semantic-driven. Rather than constraint by physical token layout, SeCo dynamically anchors compression directly in the semantic space by selecting query-relevant tokens as semantic centers and aggregating remaining tokens via consistency-weighted merging. This design inherently preserves semantic consistency while eliminating position bias. Extensive experiments on 14 benchmarks across two backbone models demonstrate that SeCo consistently shows superiority in downstream tasks, inference latency, and out-of-domain robustness. GLM-4.5V and GLM-4.1V-Thinking: Towards Versatile Multimodal Reasoning with Scalable Reinforcement Learning

We present GLM-4.1V-Thinking, GLM-4.5V, and GLM-4.6V, a family of vision-language models (VLMs) designed to advance general-purpose multimodal understanding and reasoning. In this report, we share our key findings in the development of the reasoning-centric training framework. We first develop a capable vision foundation model with significant potential through large-scale pre-training, which arguably sets the upper bound for the final performance. We then propose Reinforcement Learning with Curriculum Sampling (RLCS) to unlock the full potential of the model, leading to comprehensive capability enhancement across a diverse range of tasks, including STEM problem solving, video understanding, content recognition, coding, grounding, GUI-based agents, and long document interpretation. In a comprehensive evaluation across 42 public benchmarks, GLM-4.5V achieves state-of-the-art performance on nearly all tasks among open-source models of similar size, and demonstrates competitive or even superior results compared to closed-source models such as Gemini-2.5-Flash on challenging tasks including Coding and GUI Agents. Meanwhile, the smaller GLM-4.1V-9B-Thinking remains highly competitive-achieving superior results to the much larger Qwen2.5-VL-72B on 29 benchmarks. We open-source both GLM-4.1V-9B-Thinking and GLM-4.5V. We further introduce the GLM-4.6V series, open-source multimodal models with native tool use and a 128K context window. GLM-5V-Turbo: Toward a Native Foundation Model for Multimodal Agents

We present GLM-5V-Turbo, a step toward native foundation models for multimodal agents. As foundation models are increasingly deployed in real environments, agentic capability depends not only on language reasoning, but also on the ability to perceive, interpret, and act over heterogeneous contexts such as images, videos, webpages, documents, GUIs. GLM-5V-Turbo is built around this objective: multimodal perception is integrated as a core component of reasoning, planning, tool use, and execution, rather than as an auxiliary interface to a language model. This report summarizes the main improvements behind GLM-5V-Turbo across model design, multimodal training, reinforcement learning, toolchain expansion, and integration with agent frameworks. These developments lead to strong performance in multimodal coding, visual tool use, and framework-based agentic tasks, while preserving competitive text-only coding capability. More importantly, our development process offers practical insights for building multimodal agents, highlighting the central role of multimodal perception, hierarchical optimization, and reliable end-to-end verification.

Kernelized Advantage Estimation: From Nonparametric Statistics to LLM Reasoning

Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) have increasingly relied on reinforcement learning (RL) to improve their reasoning capabilities. Three types of approaches have been widely adopted: The first relies on a deep neural network to estimate the value function of the learning policy in order to reduce the variance of the policy gradient. However, estimating and maintaining such a value network incurs substantial computational and memory overhead. The second avoids training a value network by approximating the value function using sample averages. However, it samples a large number of reasoning traces per prompt for accurate value function approximation, making it computationally expensive. The third samples only a single reasoning trajectory per prompt, which reduces computational cost but suffers from poor sample efficiency. This paper focuses on a practical, resource-constrained setting in which only a small number of reasoning traces can be sampled per prompt, while low-variance gradient estimation remains essential for high-quality policy learning. To address this challenge, we bring classical nonparametric statistical methods, which are both computationally and statistically efficient, to LLM reasoning. We employ kernel smoothing as a concrete example for value function estimation and the subsequent policy optimization. Numerical and theoretical results demonstrate that our proposal achieves accurate value and gradient estimation, leading to improved policy optimization.

Learning Visual Feature-Based World Models via Residual Latent Action

World models predict future transitions from observations and actions. Existing works predominantly focus on image generation only. Visual feature-based world models, on the other hand, predict future visual features instead of raw video pixels, offering a promising alternative that is more efficient and less prone to hallucination. However, current feature-based approaches rely on direct regression, which leads to blurry or collapsed predictions in complex interactions, while generative modeling in high-dimensional feature spaces still remains challenging. In this work, we discover that a new type of latent action representation, which we refer to as *Residual Latent Action* (RLA), can be easily learned from DINO residuals. We also show that RLA is predictive, generalizable, and encodes temporal progression. Building on RLA, we propose *RLA World Model* (RLA-WM), which predicts RLA values via flow matching. RLA-WM outperforms both state-of-the-art feature-based and video-diffusion world models on simulation and real-world datasets, while being orders of magnitude faster than video diffusion. Furthermore, we develop two robot learning techniques that use RLA-WM to improve policy learning. The first one is a minimalist world action model with RLA that learns from actionless demonstration videos. The second one is the first visual RL framework trained entirely inside a world model learned from offline videos only, using a video-aligned reward and no online interactions or handcrafted rewards. LERA: LLM-Enhanced RAG for Ad Auction in Generative Chatbots

The integration of advertising auction mechanisms into large language model (LLM)-based chatbots presents a significant opportunity for commercialization, yet poses unique challenges in balancing relevance, efficiency, and user experience. Recently, Feizi et al.~\citep{feizi2023online} and Hajiaghayi et al.~\citep{hajiaghayi2024ad} outlined a retrieve-then-generate paradigm that decouples retrieval and generation, offering lightweight ad insertion and payment determination. However, current retrieval relies solely on text embedding similarity, which may lead to commercial misinterpretation and issues such as repetitive insertions. In this paper, we propose LERA, a two-stage retrieve-then-generate auction framework tailored for LLM chatbots. In the first stage, embedding-based coarse filtering pre-selects a small set of candidate advertisers. In the second stage, the LLM itself is queried with a carefully designed prompt to produce logits over candidates, which serve as refined organic relevance scores. These scores are combined with bids, and a critical-value payment rule accounts for both the coarse-filtering and fine-ranking thresholds, ensuring truthfulness for utility-maximizing advertisers. The framework naturally extends to multiple ad insertions within dynamic dialogue flows and long responses. Experiments on a synthetic advertiser-query benchmark show that LERA substantially improves ad selection accuracy and insertion diversity while incurring only controllable latency overhead.

OneViewAll: Semantic Prior Guided One-View 6D Pose Estimation for Novel Objects

In many practical 6D object pose estimation scenarios, we often have access to only a single real-world RGB-D reference view per object, typically without CAD models. Existing methods largely rely on explicit 3D models or multi-view data, which limits their scalability. To address this challenging single-reference model-free setting, we propose \textbf{OneViewAll}, a semantic-prior-guided framework that performs pose estimation via a novel Project-and-Compare paradigm. Instead of relying on computationally expensive CAD-based rendering, our method directly aligns reference and query observations within a projection-equivariant space. OneViewAll progressively integrates hierarchical semantic priors across three levels: (1) \textit{category- and scene-level} priors for efficient hypothesis initialization; (2) \textit{object-level symmetry} priors for geometry completion via mirror fusion; and (3) \textit{patch-level} priors for discriminative refinement. Extensive experiments demonstrate that OneViewAll achieves \textbf{92.5\%} ADD-0.1 accuracy on the LINEMOD dataset using only one real reference view -- significantly outperforming the CVPR 2025 baseline One2Any (52.6\%). It also yields consistent improvements on YCB-V, Real275, and Toyota-Light while maintaining low inference latency. Our results underscore the efficacy of symmetry-aware projection in handling symmetric, texture-less, and occluded objects.

Plug-and-play Class-aware Knowledge Injection for Prompt Learning with Visual-Language Model

Prompt learning has become an effective and widely used technique in enhancing vision-language models (VLMs) such as CLIP for various downstream tasks, particularly in zero-shot classification within specific domains. Existing methods typically focus on either learning class-shared prompts for a given domain or generating instance-specific prompts through conditional prompt learning. While these methods have achieved promising performance, they often overlook class-specific knowledge in prompt design, leading to suboptimal outcomes. The underlying reasons are: 1) class-specific prompts offer more fine-grained supervision compared to coarse class-shared prompts, which helps prevent misclassification of data from different classes into a single class; 2) compared to class-specific prompts, instance-specific prompts neglect the richer class-level information across multiple instances, potentially causing data from the same class to be divided into multiple classes. To effectively supplement the class-specific knowledge into existing methods, we propose a plug-and-play Class-Aware Knowledge Injection (CAKI) framework. CAKI comprises two key components, i.e., class-specific prompt generation and query-key prompt matching. The former encodes class-specific knowledge into prompts from few-shot samples that belong to the same class and stores the learned prompts in a class-level knowledge bank. The latter provides a plug-and-play mechanism for each test instance to retrieve relevant class-level knowledge from the knowledge bank and inject such knowledge to refine model predictions. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our CAKI effectively improves the performance of existing methods on base and novel classes. Post-training makes large language models less human-like

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used as surrogates for human participants, but it remains unclear which models best capture human behavior and why. To address this, we introduce Psych-201, a novel dataset that enables us to measure behavioral alignment at scale. We find that post-training -- the stage that turns base models into useful assistants -- consistently reduces alignment with human behavior across model families, sizes, and objectives. Moreover, this misalignment widens in newer model generations even as base models continue to improve. Finally, we find that persona-induction -- a popular technique for eliciting human-like behavior by conditioning models on participant-specific information -- does not improve predictions at the level of individuals. Taken together, our results suggest that the very processes that are currently employed to turn LLMs into useful assistants also make them less accurate models of human behavior.

Process In-Context Learning: Enhancing Mathematical Reasoning via Dynamic Demonstration Insertion

In-context learning (ICL) has proven highly effective across diverse large language model (LLM) tasks. However, its potential for enhancing tasks that demand step-by-step logical deduction, such as mathematical reasoning, remains underexplored. A core limitation of existing ICL approaches is their static use of demonstrations: examples are pre-selected before inference and remain fixed, failing to adapt to the dynamic confusion points that often arise during multi-step reasoning such as ambiguous calculations or logical gaps. These unresolved confusion points can lead to cascading errors that degrade final accuracy. To tackle this issue, we propose Process In-Context Learning (PICL), a dynamic demonstration integration framework designed to boost mathematical reasoning by responding to real-time inference needs. PICL operates in two stages: 1)~it identifies potential confusion points by analyzing semantics and entropy in the reasoning process and summarizes their core characteristics; 2)~upon encountering these points, it retrieves relevant demonstrations from the demonstration pool that match the confusion context and inserts them directly into the ongoing reasoning process to guide subsequent steps. Experiments show that PICL outperforms baseline methods by mitigating mid-inference confusion, highlighting the value of adaptive demonstration insertion in complex mathematical reasoning.

Revisiting Chain-of-Thought Prompting: Zero-shot Can Be Stronger than Few-shot

In-Context Learning (ICL) is an essential emergent ability of Large Language Models (LLMs), and recent studies introduce Chain-of-Thought (CoT) to exemplars of ICL to enhance the reasoning capability, especially in mathematics tasks. However, given the continuous advancement of model capabilities, it remains unclear whether CoT exemplars still benefit recent, stronger models in such tasks. Through systematic experiments, we find that for recent strong models such as the Qwen2.5 series, adding traditional CoT exemplars does not improve reasoning performance compared to Zero-Shot CoT. Instead, their primary function is to align the output format with human expectations. We further investigate the effectiveness of enhanced CoT exemplars, constructed using answers from advanced models such as \texttt{Qwen2.5-Max} and \texttt{DeepSeek-R1}. Experimental results indicate that these enhanced exemplars still fail to improve the model's reasoning performance. Further analysis reveals that models tend to ignore the exemplars and focus primarily on the instructions, leading to no observable gain in reasoning ability. Overall, our findings highlight the limitations of the current ICL+CoT framework in mathematical reasoning, calling for a re-examination of the ICL paradigm and the definition of exemplars.

Saliency-Aware Regularized Quantization Calibration for Large Language Models

Post-training quantization (PTQ) is an effective approach for deploying large language models (LLMs) under memory and latency constraints. Most existing PTQ methods determine quantization parameters by minimizing a layer-wise reconstruction error on a predetermined calibration dataset, typically optimized via either scale search or Gram-based methods. However, from the perspective of generalization risk, existing PTQ calibration objectives based solely on empirical reconstruction error over limited or unrepresentative calibration data may move the quantized weights away from the original floating-point weights, potentially degrading downstream performance. To address this issue, we propose \emph{Regularized Quantization Calibration} (RQC), a unified framework that augments standard PTQ objectives with a regularizer that explicitly controls weight deviation from the original weights. We further generalize this framework to incorporate a saliency-aware regularizer, resulting in \emph{Saliency-Aware Regularized Quantization Calibration} (SARQC). The proposed regularization encourages quantized weights to remain close to the original weights during calibration, leading to improved generalization at inference time. SARQC integrates seamlessly into existing PTQ pipelines and enhances both scale-search-based and Gram-based methods under a unified formulation. Extensive experiments on dense and Mixture-of-Experts LLMs demonstrate consistent improvements in perplexity and zero-shot accuracy, without introducing additional inference overhead.

Swarm Skills: A Portable, Self-Evolving Multi-Agent System Specification for Coordination Engineering

As artificial intelligence engineering paradigms shift from single-agent Prompt and Context Engineering toward multi-agent \textbf{Coordination Engineering}, the ability to codify and systematically improve how multiple agents collaborate has emerged as a critical bottleneck. While single-agent skills can now be distributed as portable assets, multi-agent coordination protocols remain locked within framework-internal code or static configurations, preventing them from being shared across systems or autonomously improved over time. We propose \textbf{Swarm Skills}, a portable specification that extends the Anthropic Skills standard with multi-agent semantics. Swarm Skills turns multi-agent workflows into first-class, distributable assets that consist of roles, workflows, execution bounds, and a built-in semantic structure for self-evolution. To operationalize the specification's evolving nature, we present a companion self-evolution algorithm that automatically distills successful execution trajectories into new Swarm Skills and continuously patches existing ones based on multi-dimensional scoring (Effectiveness, Utilization, and Freshness), eliminating the need for human-in-the-loop oversight during the refinement process. Through an architectural compatibility analysis and a comprehensive qualitative case study using the open-source JiuwenSwarm reference implementation, we demonstrate how Swarm Skills achieves zero-adapter cross-agent portability via progressive disclosure, enabling agent teams to self-evolve their coordination strategies without framework lock-in.

Towards Efficient 3D Object Detection for Vehicle-Infrastructure Collaboration via Risk-Intent Selection

Vehicle-Infrastructure Collaborative Perception (VICP) is pivotal for resolving occlusion in autonomous driving, yet the trade-off between communication bandwidth and feature redundancy remains a critical bottleneck. While intermediate fusion mitigates data volume compared to raw sharing, existing frameworks typically rely on spatial compression or static confidence maps, which inefficiently transmit spatially redundant features from non-critical background regions. To address this, we propose Risk-intent Selective detection (RiSe), an interaction-aware framework that shifts the paradigm from identifying visible regions to prioritizing risk-critical ones. Specifically, we introduce a Potential Field-Trajectory Correlation Model (PTCM) grounded in potential field theory to quantitatively assess kinematic risks. Complementing this, an Intention-Driven Area Prediction Module (IDAPM) leverages ego-motion priors to proactively predict and filter key Bird's-Eye-View (BEV) areas essential for decision-making. By integrating these components, RiSe implements a semantic-selective fusion scheme that transmits high-fidelity features only from high-interaction regions, effectively acting as a feature denoiser. Extensive experiments on the DeepAccident dataset demonstrate that our method reduces communication volume to 0.71\% of full feature sharing while maintaining state-of-the-art detection accuracy, establishing a competitive Pareto frontier between bandwidth efficiency and perception performance.

V2X-Radar: A Multi-modal Dataset with 4D Radar for Cooperative Perception

Modern autonomous vehicle perception systems often struggle with occlusions and limited perception range. Previous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of cooperative perception in extending the perception range and overcoming occlusions, thereby enhancing the safety of autonomous driving. In recent years, a series of cooperative perception datasets have emerged; however, these datasets primarily focus on cameras and LiDAR, neglecting 4D Radar, a sensor used in single-vehicle autonomous driving to provide robust perception in adverse weather conditions. In this paper, to bridge the gap created by the absence of 4D Radar datasets in cooperative perception, we present V2X-Radar, the first large-scale, real-world multi-modal dataset featuring 4D Radar. V2X-Radar dataset is collected using a connected vehicle platform and an intelligent roadside unit equipped with 4D Radar, LiDAR, and multi-view cameras. The collected data encompasses sunny and rainy weather conditions, spanning daytime, dusk, and nighttime, as well as various typical challenging scenarios. The dataset consists of 20K LiDAR frames, 40K camera images, and 20K 4D Radar data, including 350K annotated boxes across five categories. To support various research domains, we have established V2X-Radar-C for cooperative perception, V2X-Radar-I for roadside perception, and V2X-Radar-V for single-vehicle perception. Furthermore, we provide comprehensive benchmarks across these three sub-datasets. From Data to Insights: A Comprehensive Survey on Advanced Applications in Thyroid Cancer Research

Thyroid cancer, the most prevalent endocrine cancer, has gained significant global attention due to its impact on public health. Extensive research efforts have been dedicated to leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) methods for the early detection of this disease, aiming to reduce its morbidity rates. However, a comprehensive understanding of the structured organization of research applications in this particular field remains elusive. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a systematic review and developed a comprehensive taxonomy of machine learning-based applications in thyroid cancer pathogenesis, diagnosis, and prognosis. Our primary objective was to facilitate the research community's ability to stay abreast of technological advancements and potentially lead the emerging trends in this field. This survey presents a coherent literature review framework for interpreting the advanced techniques used in thyroid cancer research. A total of 758 related studies were identified and scrutinized. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first review that provides an in-depth analysis of the various aspects of AI applications employed in the context of thyroid cancer. Furthermore, we highlight key challenges encountered in this domain and propose future research opportunities for those interested in studying the latest trends or exploring less-investigated aspects of thyroid cancer research. By presenting this comprehensive review and taxonomy, we contribute to the existing knowledge in the field, while providing valuable insights for researchers, clinicians, and stakeholders in advancing the understanding and management of this disease.

A Distributionally Robust Optimization Framework for Extreme Event Estimation

Conventional methods for extreme event estimation rely on well-chosen parametric models asymptotically justified from extreme value theory (EVT). These methods, while powerful and theoretically grounded, could however encounter a difficult bias-variance tradeoff that exacerbates especially when data size is too small, deteriorating the reliability of the tail estimation. In this paper, we study a framework based on the recently surging literature of distributionally robust optimization. This approach can be viewed as a nonparametric alternative to conventional EVT, by imposing general shape belief on the tail instead of parametric assumption and using worst-case optimization as a resolution to handle the nonparametric uncertainty. We explain how this approach bypasses the bias-variance tradeoff in EVT. On the other hand, we face a conservativeness-variance tradeoff which we describe how to tackle. We also demonstrate computational tools for the involved optimization problems and compare our performance with conventional EVT across a range of numerical examples.

MobileVLM : A Fast, Strong and Open Vision Language Assistant for Mobile Devices

We present MobileVLM, a competent multimodal vision language model (MMVLM) targeted to run on mobile devices. It is an amalgamation of a myriad of architectural designs and techniques that are mobile-oriented, which comprises a set of language models at the scale of 1.4B and 2.7B parameters, trained from scratch, a multimodal vision model that is pre-trained in the CLIP fashion, cross-modality interaction via an efficient projector. We evaluate MobileVLM on several typical VLM benchmarks. Our models demonstrate on par performance compared with a few much larger models. More importantly, we measure the inference speed on both a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 CPU and an NVIDIA Jeston Orin GPU, and we obtain state-of-the-art performance of 21.5 tokens and 65.3 tokens per second, respectively. A Hybrid Cloud ERP Framework For Processing Purchasing Data

Cloud-based enterprise resource planning (cloud ERP) systems have existed in the business market for around ten years. Cloud ERP supports enterprises' daily activities by integrating organizational back-end systems in the cloud environment. One of the critical functions that cloud ERP offers is the purchasing application. The purchasing function of cloud ERP enables enterprises to streamline all the online purchasing transactions in real-time automatically. Even cloud ERP is deployed quite often these days, organizations somehow still lack the knowledge of it; to be specific, there are many issues attached to cloud ERP implementation yet to be solved. Hence, this paper compares four leading cloud ERP platforms in Australia and proposes a hybrid cloud ERP framework to process online purchasing transactions. By adopting a case study approach, a purchasing web-based application is designed and presented in this paper. In general, the proposed hybrid cloud ERP framework and the integrated web-based purchasing application allow user companies to process online purchasing transactions with short operation time and increased business efficiency; in the meantime, the proposed framework also reduces security risks attached to the public cloud.

Ambiguity Function Shaping based on Alternating Direction Riemannian Optimal Algorithm

In order to improve the ability of cognitive radar (CR) to adapt to the environment, the required ambiguity function (AF) can be synthesized by designing the waveform. The key to this problem is how to minimize the interference power. Suppressing the interference power is equivalent to minimize the expectation of slow-time ambiguity function (STAF) over range-Doppler bins. From a technical point of view, this is actually an optimization problem of a non-convex quartic function with constant modulus constraints (CMC). In this paper, we proposed a novel method to design a waveform to synthesize the STAF based on suppressing the interference power. We put forward an iterative algorithm within an alternating direction penalty method (ADPM) framework. In each iteration, this problem is split into two sub-problems by introducing auxiliary variables. In the first sub-problem, we solved the convex problem directly with a closed-form solution, then utilized the Riemannian trust region (RTR) algorithm in the second sub-problem. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms other advanced algorithms in the aspects of STAF, range-cut and signal-to-interference-ratio (SIR) value.

CAMO-MOT: Combined Appearance-Motion Optimization for 3D Multi-Object Tracking with Camera-LiDAR Fusion

3D Multi-object tracking (MOT) ensures consistency during continuous dynamic detection, conducive to subsequent motion planning and navigation tasks in autonomous driving. However, camera-based methods suffer in the case of occlusions and it can be challenging to accurately track the irregular motion of objects for LiDAR-based methods. Some fusion methods work well but do not consider the untrustworthy issue of appearance features under occlusion. At the same time, the false detection problem also significantly affects tracking. As such, we propose a novel camera-LiDAR fusion 3D MOT framework based on the Combined Appearance-Motion Optimization (CAMO-MOT), which uses both camera and LiDAR data and significantly reduces tracking failures caused by occlusion and false detection. For occlusion problems, we are the first to propose an occlusion head to select the best object appearance features multiple times effectively, reducing the influence of occlusions. To decrease the impact of false detection in tracking, we design a motion cost matrix based on confidence scores which improve the positioning and object prediction accuracy in 3D space. As existing multi-object tracking methods only consider a single category, we also propose to build a multi-category loss to implement multi-object tracking in multi-category scenes. A series of validation experiments are conducted on the KITTI and nuScenes tracking benchmarks. Our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance and the lowest identity switches (IDS) value (23 for Car and 137 for Pedestrian) among all multi-modal MOT methods on the KITTI test dataset. And our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance among all algorithms on the nuScenes test dataset with 75.3% AMOTA.

Certified Error Control of Candidate Set Pruning for Two-Stage Relevance Ranking

In information retrieval (IR), candidate set pruning has been commonly used to speed up two-stage relevance ranking. However, such an approach lacks accurate error control and often trades accuracy off against computational efficiency in an empirical fashion, lacking theoretical guarantees. In this paper, we propose the concept of certified error control of candidate set pruning for relevance ranking, which means that the test error after pruning is guaranteed to be controlled under a user-specified threshold with high probability. Both in-domain and out-of-domain experiments show that our method successfully prunes the first-stage retrieved candidate sets to improve the second-stage reranking speed while satisfying the pre-specified accuracy constraints in both settings. For example, on MS MARCO Passage v1, our method yields an average candidate set size of 27 out of 1,000 which increases the reranking speed by about 37 times, while the MRR@10 is greater than a pre-specified value of 0.38 with about 90% empirical coverage and the empirical baselines fail to provide such guarantee. Coarse-to-Fine: Hierarchical Multi-task Learning for Natural Language Understanding

Generalized text representations are the foundation of many natural language understanding tasks. To fully utilize the different corpus, it is inevitable that models need to understand the relevance among them. However, many methods ignore the relevance and adopt a single-channel model (a coarse paradigm) directly for all tasks, which lacks enough rationality and interpretation. In addition, some existing works learn downstream tasks by stitches skill block(a fine paradigm), which might cause irrationalresults due to its redundancy and noise. Inthis work, we first analyze the task correlation through three different perspectives, i.e., data property, manual design, and model-based relevance, based on which the similar tasks are grouped together. Then, we propose a hierarchical framework with a coarse-to-fine paradigm, with the bottom level shared to all the tasks, the mid-level divided to different groups, and the top-level assigned to each of the tasks. This allows our model to learn basic language properties from all tasks, boost performance on relevant tasks, and reduce the negative impact from irrelevant tasks. Our experiments on 13 benchmark datasets across five natural language understanding tasks demonstrate the superiority of our method.

DE-RSTC: A rational secure two-party computation protocol based on direction entropy

Rational secure multi-party computation (RSMC) means two or more rational parties to complete a function on private inputs. In the process, the rational parties choose strategies to maximize utility, which will cause players to maliciously execute the protocol and undermine the fairness and correctness of the protocol. To solve this problem, we leverage game theory to propose the direction entropy-based solution. First, we utilize the direction vector of the direction entropy to examine the player's strategy uncertainty and quantify its strategy from different dimensions. Specifically, when parties choose a cooperation strategy, the direction vector is positive, and the information transmitted is positive, conversely, it is negative information. Then, we provide mutual information to construct new utility functions for the players. What's more, we measure the mutual information of players to appraise their strategies. Finally, we prove in detail the protocol we gave, and the result show that the fairness problem in rational secure two-party computation. We also prove that the proposed protocol reaches the Nash equilibrium. Furthermore, we conduct experiments using mutual information to construct utility, and the results show that the utility obtained when the player is honest will be higher.

Dynamic Registration: Joint Ego Motion Estimation and 3D Moving Object Detection in Dynamic Environment

Localization in a dynamic environment suffers from moving objects. Removing dynamic object is crucial in this situation but become tricky when ego-motion is coupled. In this paper, instead of proposing a new slam framework, we aim at a more general strategy for a localization scenario. In that case, Dynamic Registration is available for integrating with any lidar slam system. We utilize 3D object detection to obtain potential moving objects and remove them temporarily. Then we proposed Dynamic Registration, to iteratively estimate ego-motion and segment moving objects until no static object generates. Static objects are merged with the environment. Finally, we successfully segment dynamic objects, static environments with static objects, and ego-motion estimation in a dynamic environment. We evaluate the performance of our proposed method on KITTI Tracking datasets. Results show stable and consistent improvements based on other classical registration algorithms.

Evolutionary Game-Theoretical Analysis for General Multiplayer Asymmetric Games

Evolutionary game theory has been a successful tool to combine classical game theory with learning-dynamical descriptions in multiagent systems. Provided some symmetric structures of interacting players, many studies have been focused on using a simplified heuristic payoff table as input to analyse the dynamics of interactions. Nevertheless, even for the state-of-the-art method, there are two limits. First, there is inaccuracy when analysing the simplified payoff table. Second, no existing work is able to deal with 2-population multiplayer asymmetric games. In this paper, we fill the gap between heuristic payoff table and dynamic analysis without any inaccuracy. In addition, we propose a general framework for $m$ versus $n$ 2-population multiplayer asymmetric games. Then, we compare our method with the state-of-the-art in some classic games. Finally, to illustrate our method, we perform empirical game-theoretical analysis on Wolfpack as well as StarCraft II, both of which involve complex multiagent interactions.

From Easy to Hard: A Dual Curriculum Learning Framework for Context-Aware Document Ranking

Contextual information in search sessions is important for capturing users' search intents. Various approaches have been proposed to model user behavior sequences to improve document ranking in a session. Typically, training samples of (search context, document) pairs are sampled randomly in each training epoch. In reality, the difficulty to understand user's search intent and to judge document's relevance varies greatly from one search context to another. Mixing up training samples of different difficulties may confuse the model's optimization process. In this work, we propose a curriculum learning framework for context-aware document ranking, in which the ranking model learns matching signals between the search context and the candidate document in an easy-to-hard manner. In so doing, we aim to guide the model gradually toward a global optimum. To leverage both positive and negative examples, two curricula are designed. Experiments on two real query log datasets show that our proposed framework can improve the performance of several existing methods significantly, demonstrating the effectiveness of curriculum learning for context-aware document ranking.

Functionally Reconfigurable Integrated Structure of Fabry-Perot Antenna and Wideband Liquid Absorber

This paper proposes a functionally reconfigurable integrated structure of a Fabry-Perot (FP) antenna and wideband liquid absorber. The partial reflecting surface (PRS) is elaborately tailored to serve as both a component of the FP antenna and the metal ground of the broadband liquid absorber. Then the integrated structure is realized by combining the FP antenna with the liquid absorber. The PRS is composed of patches on the top layer of the substrate and the square loop on the bottom and the microstrip patch antenna is used as a source. The liquid absorber is composed of a 3-D printed container, 45% ethanol layer, and a metal ground. By this design, the structure can serve as the FP antenna when the ethanol is extracted or the liquid absorber when the ethanol is injected. This can be used to switch between detection and stealth mode which can better adapt to the complex electromagnetic environment. The simulation results show that the gain of the antenna reaches to 19.7 dBi and the operating band is 100 MHz when the ethanol is extracted. When the ethanol is injected, the absorption band of the absorber ranges from 4 GHz to 20 GHz and the absorption bandwidth is over 133%. The monostatic RCS reduction bands of the structure with ethanol range from 4 GHz to 20GHz and the average RCS reduction is 28.4 dB. The measured and simulated results agree well.

GCN-MIF: Graph Convolutional Network with Multi-Information Fusion for Low-dose CT Denoising

Being low-level radiation exposure and less harmful to health, low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) has been widely adopted in the early screening of lung cancer and COVID-19. LDCT images inevitably suffer from the degradation problem caused by complex noises. It was reported that deep learning (DL)-based LDCT denoising methods using convolutional neural network (CNN) achieved impressive denoising performance. Although most existing DL-based methods (e.g., encoder-decoder framework) can implicitly utilize non-local and contextual information via downsampling operator and 3D CNN, the explicit multi-information (i.e., local, non-local, and contextual) integration may not be explored enough. To address this issue, we propose a novel graph convolutional network-based LDCT denoising model, namely GCN-MIF, to explicitly perform multi-information fusion for denoising purpose. Concretely, by constructing intra- and inter-slice graph, the graph convolutional network is introduced to leverage the non-local and contextual relationships among pixels. The traditional CNN is adopted for the extraction of local information. Finally, the proposed GCN-MIF model fuses all the extracted local, non-local, and contextual information. Extensive experiments show the effectiveness of our proposed GCN-MIF model by quantitative and visualized results. Furthermore, a double-blind reader study on a public clinical dataset is also performed to validate the usability of denoising results in terms of the structural fidelity, the noise suppression, and the overall score. Generative Pre-Trained Transformers for Biologically Inspired Design

Biological systems in nature have evolved for millions of years to adapt and survive the environment. Many features they developed can be inspirational and beneficial for solving technical problems in modern industries. This leads to a novel form of design-by-analogy called bio-inspired design (BID). Although BID as a design method has been proven beneficial, the gap between biology and engineering continuously hinders designers from effectively applying the method. Therefore, we explore the recent advance of artificial intelligence (AI) for a computational approach to bridge the gap. This paper proposes a generative design approach based on the pre-trained language model (PLM) to automatically retrieve and map biological analogy and generate BID in the form of natural language. The latest generative pre-trained transformer, namely GPT-3, is used as the base PLM. Three types of design concept generators are identified and fine-tuned from the PLM according to the looseness of the problem space representation. Machine evaluators are also fine-tuned to assess the correlation between the domains within the generated BID concepts. The approach is then tested via a case study in which the fine-tuned models are applied to generate and evaluate light-weighted flying car concepts inspired by nature. The results show our approach can generate BID concepts with good performance.

Hyperlink-induced Pre-training for Passage Retrieval in Open-domain Question Answering

To alleviate the data scarcity problem in training question answering systems, recent works propose additional intermediate pre-training for dense passage retrieval (DPR). However, there still remains a large discrepancy between the provided upstream signals and the downstream question-passage relevance, which leads to less improvement. To bridge this gap, we propose the HyperLink-induced Pre-training (HLP), a method to pre-train the dense retriever with the text relevance induced by hyperlink-based topology within Web documents. We demonstrate that the hyperlink-based structures of dual-link and co-mention can provide effective relevance signals for large-scale pre-training that better facilitate downstream passage retrieval. We investigate the effectiveness of our approach across a wide range of open-domain QA datasets under zero-shot, few-shot, multi-hop, and out-of-domain scenarios. The experiments show our HLP outperforms the BM25 by up to 7 points as well as other pre-training methods by more than 10 points in terms of top-20 retrieval accuracy under the zero-shot scenario. Furthermore, HLP significantly outperforms other pre-training methods under the other scenarios.

Implicit Sample Extension for Unsupervised Person Re-Identification

Most existing unsupervised person re-identification (Re-ID) methods use clustering to generate pseudo labels for model training. Unfortunately, clustering sometimes mixes different true identities together or splits the same identity into two or more sub clusters. Training on these noisy clusters substantially hampers the Re-ID accuracy. Due to the limited samples in each identity, we suppose there may lack some underlying information to well reveal the accurate clusters. To discover these information, we propose an Implicit Sample Extension (\OurWholeMethod) method to generate what we call support samples around the cluster boundaries. Specifically, we generate support samples from actual samples and their neighbouring clusters in the embedding space through a progressive linear interpolation (PLI) strategy. PLI controls the generation with two critical factors, i.e., 1) the direction from the actual sample towards its K-nearest clusters and 2) the degree for mixing up the context information from the K-nearest clusters. Meanwhile, given the support samples, ISE further uses a label-preserving loss to pull them towards their corresponding actual samples, so as to compact each cluster. Consequently, ISE reduces the "sub and mixed" clustering errors, thus improving the Re-ID performance. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed method is effective and achieves state-of-the-art performance for unsupervised person Re-ID. KMIR: A Benchmark for Evaluating Knowledge Memorization, Identification and Reasoning Abilities of Language Models

Previous works show the great potential of pre-trained language models (PLMs) for storing a large amount of factual knowledge. However, to figure out whether PLMs can be reliable knowledge sources and used as alternative knowledge bases (KBs), we need to further explore some critical features of PLMs. Firstly, knowledge memorization and identification abilities: traditional KBs can store various types of entities and relationships; do PLMs have a high knowledge capacity to store different types of knowledge? Secondly, reasoning ability: a qualified knowledge source should not only provide a collection of facts, but support a symbolic reasoner. Can PLMs derive new knowledge based on the correlations between facts? To evaluate these features of PLMs, we propose a benchmark, named Knowledge Memorization, Identification, and Reasoning test (KMIR). KMIR covers 3 types of knowledge, including general knowledge, domain-specific knowledge, and commonsense, and provides 184,348 well-designed questions. Preliminary experiments with various representative pre-training language models on KMIR reveal many interesting phenomenons: 1) The memorization ability of PLMs depends more on the number of parameters than training schemes. 2) Current PLMs are struggling to robustly remember the facts. 3) Model compression technology retains the amount of knowledge well, but hurts the identification and reasoning abilities. We hope KMIR can facilitate the design of PLMs as better knowledge sources.

Learning Granularity-Unified Representations for Text-to-Image Person Re-identification

Text-to-image person re-identification (ReID) aims to search for pedestrian images of an interested identity via textual descriptions. It is challenging due to both rich intra-modal variations and significant inter-modal gaps. Existing works usually ignore the difference in feature granularity between the two modalities, i.e., the visual features are usually fine-grained while textual features are coarse, which is mainly responsible for the large inter-modal gaps. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end framework based on transformers to learn granularity-unified representations for both modalities, denoted as LGUR. LGUR framework contains two modules: a Dictionary-based Granularity Alignment (DGA) module and a Prototype-based Granularity Unification (PGU) module. In DGA, in order to align the granularities of two modalities, we introduce a Multi-modality Shared Dictionary (MSD) to reconstruct both visual and textual features. Besides, DGA has two important factors, i.e., the cross-modality guidance and the foreground-centric reconstruction, to facilitate the optimization of MSD. In PGU, we adopt a set of shared and learnable prototypes as the queries to extract diverse and semantically aligned features for both modalities in the granularity-unified feature space, which further promotes the ReID performance. Comprehensive experiments show that our LGUR consistently outperforms state-of-the-arts by large margins on both CUHK-PEDES and ICFG-PEDES datasets. Mix-Teaching: A Simple, Unified and Effective Semi-Supervised Learning Framework for Monocular 3D Object Detection

Monocular 3D object detection is an essential perception task for autonomous driving. However, the high reliance on large-scale labeled data make it costly and time-consuming during model optimization. To reduce such over-reliance on human annotations, we propose Mix-Teaching, an effective semi-supervised learning framework applicable to employ both labeled and unlabeled images in training stage. Mix-Teaching first generates pseudo-labels for unlabeled images by self-training. The student model is then trained on the mixed images possessing much more intensive and precise labeling by merging instance-level image patches into empty backgrounds or labeled images. This is the first to break the image-level limitation and put high-quality pseudo labels from multi frames into one image for semi-supervised training. Besides, as a result of the misalignment between confidence score and localization quality, it's hard to discriminate high-quality pseudo-labels from noisy predictions using only confidence-based criterion. To that end, we further introduce an uncertainty-based filter to help select reliable pseudo boxes for the above mixing operation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first unified SSL framework for monocular 3D object detection. Mix-Teaching consistently improves MonoFlex and GUPNet by significant margins under various labeling ratios on KITTI dataset. For example, our method achieves around +6.34% AP@0.7 improvement against the GUPNet baseline on validation set when using only 10% labeled data. Besides, by leveraging full training set and the additional 48K raw images of KITTI, it can further improve the MonoFlex by +4.65% improvement on AP@0.7 for car detection, reaching 18.54% AP@0.7, which ranks the 1st place among all monocular based methods on KITTI test leaderboard. Multi-channel deep convolutional neural networks for multi-classifying thyroid disease

Thyroid disease instances have been continuously increasing since the 1990s, and thyroid cancer has become the most rapidly rising disease among all the malignancies in recent years. Most existing studies focused on applying deep convolutional neural networks for detecting thyroid cancer. Despite their satisfactory performance on binary classification tasks, limited studies have explored multi-class classification of thyroid disease types; much less is known of the diagnosis of co-existence situation for different types of thyroid diseases. Therefore, this study proposed a novel multi-channel convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture to address the multi-class classification task of thyroid disease. The multi-channel CNN merits from computed tomography to drive a comprehensive diagnostic decision for the overall thyroid gland, emphasizing the disease co-existence circumstance. Moreover, this study also examined alternative strategies to enhance the diagnostic accuracy of CNN models through concatenation of different scales of feature maps. Benchmarking experiments demonstrate the improved performance of the proposed multi-channel CNN architecture compared with the standard single-channel CNN architecture. More specifically, the multi-channel CNN achieved an accuracy of 0.909, precision of 0.944, recall of 0.896, specificity of 0.994, and F1 of 0.917, in contrast to the single-channel CNN, which obtained 0.902, 0.892, 0.909, 0.993, 0.898, respectively. In addition, the proposed model was evaluated in different gender groups; it reached a diagnostic accuracy of 0.908 for the female group and 0.901 for the male group. Collectively, the results highlight that the proposed multi-channel CNN has excellent generalization and has the potential to be deployed to provide computational decision support in clinical settings.

Multi-Objective Model-based Reinforcement Learning for Infectious Disease Control

Severe infectious diseases such as the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pose a huge threat to public health. Stringent control measures, such as school closures and stay-at-home orders, while having significant effects, also bring huge economic losses. In the face of an emerging infectious disease, a crucial question for policymakers is how to make the trade-off and implement the appropriate interventions timely given the huge uncertainty. In this work, we propose a Multi-Objective Model-based Reinforcement Learning framework to facilitate data-driven decision-making and minimize the overall long-term cost. Specifically, at each decision point, a Bayesian epidemiological model is first learned as the environment model, and then the proposed model-based multi-objective planning algorithm is applied to find a set of Pareto-optimal policies. This framework, combined with the prediction bands for each policy, provides a real-time decision support tool for policymakers. The application is demonstrated with the spread of COVID-19 in China.

Optimal model averaging for single-index models with divergent dimensions

This paper offers a new approach to address the model uncertainty in (potentially) divergent-dimensional single-index models (SIMs). We propose a model-averaging estimator based on cross-validation, which allows the dimension of covariates and the number of candidate models to increase with the sample size. We show that when all candidate models are misspecified, our model-averaging estimator is asymptotically optimal in the sense that its squared loss is asymptotically identical to that of the infeasible best possible averaging estimator. In a different situation where correct models are available in the model set, the proposed weighting scheme assigns all weights to the correct models in the asymptotic sense. We also extend our method to average regularized estimators and propose pre-screening methods to deal with cases with high-dimensional covariates. We illustrate the merits of our method via simulations and two empirical applications.

Pre-training for Information Retrieval: Are Hyperlinks Fully Explored?

Recent years have witnessed great progress on applying pre-trained language models, e.g., BERT, to information retrieval (IR) tasks. Hyperlinks, which are commonly used in Web pages, have been leveraged for designing pre-training objectives. For example, anchor texts of the hyperlinks have been used for simulating queries, thus constructing tremendous query-document pairs for pre-training. However, as a bridge across two web pages, the potential of hyperlinks has not been fully explored. In this work, we focus on modeling the relationship between two documents that are connected by hyperlinks and designing a new pre-training objective for ad-hoc retrieval. Specifically, we categorize the relationships between documents into four groups: no link, unidirectional link, symmetric link, and the most relevant symmetric link. By comparing two documents sampled from adjacent groups, the model can gradually improve its capability of capturing matching signals. We propose a progressive hyperlink predication ({PHP}) framework to explore the utilization of hyperlinks in pre-training. Experimental results on two large-scale ad-hoc retrieval datasets and six question-answering datasets demonstrate its superiority over existing pre-training methods.

Recycling of Perovskite Substrate

The use of water-soluble sacrificial layer of Sr$_3$Al$_2$O$_6$ has tremendously boosted the research on freestanding functional oxide thin films, especially thanks to its ultimate capability to produce high-quality epitaxial perovskite thin films. However, the costly single-crystalline substrates, e.g. SrTiO$_3$, were generally discarded after obtaining the freestanding thin films. Here, we demonstrate that the SrTiO$_3$ substrates can be recycled to fabricate La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ films with nearly identical structural and electrical properties. After attaining freestanding thin films, the residues on SrTiO$_3$ can be removed by 80 \degree C hot water soaking and rinsing treatments. Consequently, the surface of SrTiO$_3$ reverted to its original step-and-terrace structure.

Temporal and Spatial Online Integrated Calibration for Camera and LiDAR

While camera and LiDAR are widely used in most of the assisted and autonomous driving systems, only a few works have been proposed to associate the temporal synchronization and extrinsic calibration for camera and LiDAR which are dedicated to online sensors data fusion. The temporal and spatial calibration technologies are facing the challenges of lack of relevance and real-time. In this paper, we introduce the pose estimation model and environmental robust line features extraction to improve the relevance of data fusion and instant online ability of correction. Dynamic targets eliminating aims to seek optimal policy considering the correspondence of point cloud matching between adjacent moments. The searching optimization process aims to provide accurate parameters with both computation accuracy and efficiency. To demonstrate the benefits of this method, we evaluate it on the KITTI benchmark with ground truth value. In online experiments, our approach improves the accuracy by 38.5\% than the soft synchronization method in temporal calibration. While in spatial calibration, our approach automatically corrects disturbance errors within 0.4 second and achieves an accuracy of 0.3-degree. This work can promote the research and application of sensor fusion.

Tetrahedron instantons

We introduce and study tetrahedron instantons, which can be realized in string theory by D$1$-branes probing a configuration of intersecting D$7$-branes in flat spacetime with a proper constant $B$-field. Physically they capture instantons on $\mathbb{C}^{3}$ in the presence of the most general intersecting real codimension-two supersymmetric defects. Moreover, we construct the tetrahedron instantons as particular solutions of general instanton equations in noncommutative field theory. We analyze the moduli space of tetrahedron instantons and discuss the geometric interpretations. We compute the instanton partition function both via the equivariant localization on the moduli space of tetrahedron instantons and via the elliptic genus of the worldvolume theory on the D$1$-branes probing the intersecting D$7$-branes, obtaining the same result. The instanton partition function of the tetrahedron instantons lies between the higher-rank Donaldson-Thomas invariants on $\mathbb{C}^{3}$ and the partition function of the magnificent four model, which is conjectured to be the mother of all instanton partition functions. Finally, we show that the instanton partition function admits a free field representation, suggesting the existence of a novel kind of symmetry which acts on the cohomology of the moduli spaces of tetrahedron instantons.

Towards Best Practices for Training Multilingual Dense Retrieval Models

Dense retrieval models using a transformer-based bi-encoder design have emerged as an active area of research. In this work, we focus on the task of monolingual retrieval in a variety of typologically diverse languages using one such design. Although recent work with multilingual transformers demonstrates that they exhibit strong cross-lingual generalization capabilities, there remain many open research questions, which we tackle here. Our study is organized as a "best practices" guide for training multilingual dense retrieval models, broken down into three main scenarios: where a multilingual transformer is available, but relevance judgments are not available in the language of interest; where both models and training data are available; and, where training data are available not but models. In considering these scenarios, we gain a better understanding of the role of multi-stage fine-tuning, the strength of cross-lingual transfer under various conditions, the usefulness of out-of-language data, and the advantages of multilingual vs. monolingual transformers. Our recommendations offer a guide for practitioners building search applications, particularly for low-resource languages, and while our work leaves open a number of research questions, we provide a solid foundation for future work.

Towards Efficient NLP: A Standard Evaluation and A Strong Baseline

Supersized pre-trained language models have pushed the accuracy of various natural language processing (NLP) tasks to a new state-of-the-art (SOTA). Rather than pursuing the reachless SOTA accuracy, more and more researchers start paying attention on model efficiency and usability. Different from accuracy, the metric for efficiency varies across different studies, making them hard to be fairly compared. To that end, this work presents ELUE (Efficient Language Understanding Evaluation), a standard evaluation, and a public leaderboard for efficient NLP models. ELUE is dedicated to depict the Pareto Frontier for various language understanding tasks, such that it can tell whether and how much a method achieves Pareto improvement. Along with the benchmark, we also release a strong baseline, ElasticBERT, which allows BERT to exit at any layer in both static and dynamic ways. We demonstrate the ElasticBERT, despite its simplicity, outperforms or performs on par with SOTA compressed and early exiting models. With ElasticBERT, the proposed ELUE has a strong Pareto Frontier and makes a better evaluation for efficient NLP models.

Transforming the Latent Space of StyleGAN for Real Face Editing

Despite recent advances in semantic manipulation using StyleGAN, semantic editing of real faces remains challenging. The gap between the $W$ space and the $W$+ space demands an undesirable trade-off between reconstruction quality and editing quality. To solve this problem, we propose to expand the latent space by replacing fully-connected layers in the StyleGAN's mapping network with attention-based transformers. This simple and effective technique integrates the aforementioned two spaces and transforms them into one new latent space called $W$++. Our modified StyleGAN maintains the state-of-the-art generation quality of the original StyleGAN with moderately better diversity. But more importantly, the proposed $W$++ space achieves superior performance in both reconstruction quality and editing quality. Despite these significant advantages, our $W$++ space supports existing inversion algorithms and editing methods with only negligible modifications thanks to its structural similarity with the $W/W$+ space. Extensive experiments on the FFHQ dataset prove that our proposed $W$++ space is evidently more preferable than the previous $W/W$+ space for real face editing. UFO: Unified Feature Optimization

This paper proposes a novel Unified Feature Optimization (UFO) paradigm for training and deploying deep models under real-world and large-scale scenarios, which requires a collection of multiple AI functions. UFO aims to benefit each single task with a large-scale pretraining on all tasks. Compared with the well known foundation model, UFO has two different points of emphasis, i.e., relatively smaller model size and NO adaptation cost: 1) UFO squeezes a wide range of tasks into a moderate-sized unified model in a multi-task learning manner and further trims the model size when transferred to down-stream tasks. 2) UFO does not emphasize transfer to novel tasks. Instead, it aims to make the trimmed model dedicated for one or more already-seen task. With these two characteristics, UFO provides great convenience for flexible deployment, while maintaining the benefits of large-scale pretraining. A key merit of UFO is that the trimming process not only reduces the model size and inference consumption, but also even improves the accuracy on certain tasks. Specifically, UFO considers the multi-task training and brings two-fold impact on the unified model: some closely related tasks have mutual benefits, while some tasks have conflicts against each other. UFO manages to reduce the conflicts and to preserve the mutual benefits through a novel Network Architecture Search (NAS) method. Experiments on a wide range of deep representation learning tasks (i.e., face recognition, person re-identification, vehicle re-identification and product retrieval) show that the model trimmed from UFO achieves higher accuracy than its single-task-trained counterpart and yet has smaller model size, validating the concept of UFO. Besides, UFO also supported the release of 17 billion parameters computer vision (CV) foundation model which is the largest CV model in the industry.

$\mathcal{N}=1$ Curves on Generalized Coulomb Branches

We study the low energy effective dynamics of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theories of class $\mathcal{S}_k$ on the generalized Coulomb branch. The low energy effective gauge couplings are naturally encoded in algebraic curves $\mathcal{X}$, which we derive for general values of the couplings and mass deformations. We then recast these IR curves $\mathcal{X}$ to the UV or M-theory form $\mathcal{C}$: the punctured Riemann surfaces on which the six-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ ${A_{k-1}}$ SCFTs are compactified giving the class $\mathcal{S}_k$ theories. We find that the UV curves $\mathcal{C}$ and their corresponding meromorphic differentials take the same form as those for their mother four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories of class $\mathcal{S}$. They have the same poles, and their residues are functions of all the exactly marginal couplings and the bare mass parameters which we can compute exactly.

A Broad-Spectrum Diffractive Network via Ensemble Learning

We proposed a broad-spectrum diffractive deep neural network (BS-D2NN) framework, which incorporates multi-wavelength channels of input lightfields and performs a parallel phase-only modulation utilizing a layered passive mask architecture. A complementary multi-channel base learner cluster is formed in a homogeneous ensemble framework based on the diffractive dispersion during lightwave modulation. In addition, both the optical Sum operation and the Hybrid (optical-electronic) Maxout operation are performed for motivating the BS-D2NN to learn and construct a mapping between input lightfields and truth labels under heterochromatic ambient lighting. The BS-D2NN can be trained using deep learning algorithms so as to perform a kind of wavelength-insensitive high-accuracy object classification.

A New Window Loss Function for Bone Fracture Detection and Localization in X-ray Images with Point-based Annotation

Object detection methods are widely adopted for computer-aided diagnosis using medical images. Anomalous findings are usually treated as objects that are described by bounding boxes. Yet, many pathological findings, e.g., bone fractures, cannot be clearly defined by bounding boxes, owing to considerable instance, shape and boundary ambiguities. This makes bounding box annotations, and their associated losses, highly ill-suited. In this work, we propose a new bone fracture detection method for X-ray images, based on a labor effective and flexible annotation scheme suitable for abnormal findings with no clear object-level spatial extents or boundaries. Our method employs a simple, intuitive, and informative point-based annotation protocol to mark localized pathology information. To address the uncertainty in the fracture scales annotated via point(s), we convert the annotations into pixel-wise supervision that uses lower and upper bounds with positive, negative, and uncertain regions. A novel Window Loss is subsequently proposed to only penalize the predictions outside of the uncertain regions. Our method has been extensively evaluated on 4410 pelvic X-ray images of unique patients. Experiments demonstrate that our method outperforms previous state-of-the-art image classification and object detection baselines by healthy margins, with an AUROC of 0.983 and FROC score of 89.6%.

DNA: Deeply-supervised Nonlinear Aggregation for Salient Object Detection

Recent progress on salient object detection mainly aims at exploiting how to effectively integrate multi-scale convolutional features in convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Many popular methods impose deep supervision to perform side-output predictions that are linearly aggregated for final saliency prediction. In this paper, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate that linear aggregation of side-output predictions is suboptimal, and it only makes limited use of the side-output information obtained by deep supervision. To solve this problem, we propose Deeply-supervised Nonlinear Aggregation (DNA) for better leveraging the complementary information of various side-outputs. Compared with existing methods, it i) aggregates side-output features rather than predictions, and ii) adopts nonlinear instead of linear transformations. Experiments demonstrate that DNA can successfully break through the bottleneck of current linear approaches. Specifically, the proposed saliency detector, a modified U-Net architecture with DNA, performs favorably against state-of-the-art methods on various datasets and evaluation metrics without bells and whistles.

A note on chiral trace relations from qq-characters

We study chiral operators in four-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories. We provide a general procedure to derive the exact relations among the vacuum expectation values of chiral operators in the Omega-background using the non-perturbative Dyson-Schwinger equations of qq-characters. We demonstrate our procedure using several examples. For pure SU(N) gauge theory and SU(N) gauge theory with 2N fundamental hypermultiplets, we verify the relations conjectured previously in the literature. We also briefly discuss the relations in SU(N) linear superconformal quiver gauge theories.

DeepDualMapper: A Gated Fusion Network for Automatic Map Extraction using Aerial Images and Trajectories

Automatic map extraction is of great importance to urban computing and location-based services. Aerial image and GPS trajectory data refer to two different data sources that could be leveraged to generate the map, although they carry different types of information. Most previous works on data fusion between aerial images and data from auxiliary sensors do not fully utilize the information of both modalities and hence suffer from the issue of information loss. We propose a deep convolutional neural network called DeepDualMapper which fuses the aerial image and trajectory data in a more seamless manner to extract the digital map. We design a gated fusion module to explicitly control the information flows from both modalities in a complementary-aware manner. Moreover, we propose a novel densely supervised refinement decoder to generate the prediction in a coarse-to-fine way. Our comprehensive experiments demonstrate that DeepDualMapper can fuse the information of images and trajectories much more effectively than existing approaches, and is able to generate maps with higher accuracy.

Dual-discriminator GAN: A GAN way of profile face recognition

A wealth of angle problems occur when facial recognition is performed: At present, the feature extraction network presents eigenvectors with large differences between the frontal face and profile face recognition of the same person in many cases. For this reason, the state-of-the-art facial recognition network will use multiple samples for the same target to ensure that eigenvector differences caused by angles are ignored during training. However, there is another solution available, which is to generate frontal face images with profile face images before recognition. In this paper, we proposed a method of generating frontal faces with image-to-image profile faces based on Generative Adversarial Network (GAN).

Effective gravitational couplings of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories

The low energy effective couplings of a four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theory to topological invariants of the background gravitational field are described by two functions $A$ and $B$. These two functions play an important role in the study of topologically twisted four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories and in the computation of central charges of $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal theories. In this paper, we compute $A$ and $B$ from the partition function in the $Ω$-background for $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ gauge theories. Our results not only confirm the predicted expressions of the effective gravitational couplings, but also give the previously undetermined overall multiplicative factors. We also analyze $A$ and $B$ for the $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ super-Yang-Mills theory, and confirm all the previous predictions.

Electronic structure of pristine and Ni-substituted LaFeO$_3$ from near edge x-ray absorption fine structure experiments and first-principles simulations

We present a joint theoretical and experimental study of the oxygen $K$-edge spectra for LaFeO$_3$ and homovalent Ni-substituted LaFeO$_3$ (LaFe$_{0.75}$Ni$_{0.25}$O$_3$), using first-principles simulations based on density-functional theory with extended Hubbard functionals and x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) measurements. Ground-state and excited-state XANES calculations employ Hubbard on-site $U$ and inter-site $V$ parameters determined from first principles and the Lanczos recursive method to obtain absorption cross sections, which allows for a reliable description of XANES spectra in transition-metal compounds in a very broad energy range, with an accuracy comparable to that of hybrid functionals but at a substantially lower cost. We show that standard gradient-corrected exchange-correlation functionals fail in capturing accurately the electronic properties of both materials. In particular, for LaFe$_{0.75}$Ni$_{0.25}$O$_3$ they do not reproduce its semiconducting behaviour and provide a poor description of the pre-edge features at the O $K$ edge. The inclusion of Hubbard interactions leads to a drastic improvement, accounting for the semiconducting ground state of LaFe$_{0.75}$Ni$_{0.25}$O$_3$ and for a good agreement between calculated and measured XANES spectra. We show that the partial substitution of Fe for Ni affects the conduction-band bottom by generating a strongly hybridized O($2p$)-Ni($3d$) minority-spin empty electronic state. The present work, based on a consistent correction of self-interaction errors, outlines the crucial role of extended Hubbard functionals to describe the electronic structure of complex transition-metal oxides such as LaFeO$_3$ and LaFe$_{0.75}$Ni$_{0.25}$O$_3$ and paves the way to future studies on similar systems.

Error Bounds for Generalized Group Sparsity

In high-dimensional statistical inference, sparsity regularizations have shown advantages in consistency and convergence rates for coefficient estimation. We consider a generalized version of Sparse-Group Lasso which captures both element-wise sparsity and group-wise sparsity simultaneously. We state one universal theorem which is proved to obtain results on consistency and convergence rates for different forms of double sparsity regularization. The universality of the results lies in an generalization of various convergence rates for single regularization cases such as LASSO and group LASSO and also double regularization cases such as sparse-group LASSO. Our analysis identifies a generalized norm of $ε$-norm, which provides a dual formulation for our double sparsity regularization.

Exploit the potential of Multi-column architecture for Crowd Counting

Crowd counting is an important yet challenging task in computer vision due to serious occlusions, complex background and large scale variations, etc. Multi-column architecture is widely adopted to overcome these challenges, yielding state-of-the-art performance in many public benchmarks. However, there still are two issues in such design: scale limitation and feature similarity. Further performance improvements are thus restricted. In this paper, we propose a novel crowd counting framework called Pyramid Scale Network (PSNet) to explicitly address these issues. Specifically, for scale limitation, we adopt three Pyramid Scale Modules (PSM) to efficiently capture multi-scale features, which integrate a message passing mechanism and an attention mechanism into multi-column architecture. Moreover, for feature similarity, a novel loss function named Multi-column variance loss is introduced to make the features learned by each column in PSM appropriately different from each other. To the best of our knowledge, PSNet is the first work to explicitly address scale limitation and feature similarity in multi-column design. Extensive experiments on five benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed innovations as well as the superior performance over the state-of-the-art. Memorizing Comprehensively to Learn Adaptively: Unsupervised Cross-Domain Person Re-ID with Multi-level Memory

Unsupervised cross-domain person re-identification (Re-ID) aims to adapt the information from the labelled source domain to an unlabelled target domain. Due to the lack of supervision in the target domain, it is crucial to identify the underlying similarity-and-dissimilarity relationships among the unlabelled samples in the target domain. In order to use the whole data relationships efficiently in mini-batch training, we apply a series of memory modules to maintain an up-to-date representation of the entire dataset. Unlike the simple exemplar memory in previous works, we propose a novel multi-level memory network (MMN) to discover multi-level complementary information in the target domain, relying on three memory modules, i.e., part-level memory, instance-level memory, and domain-level memory. The proposed memory modules store multi-level representations of the target domain, which capture both the fine-grained differences between images and the global structure for the holistic target domain. The three memory modules complement each other and systematically integrate multi-level supervision from bottom to up. Experiments on three datasets demonstrate that the multi-level memory modules cooperatively boost the unsupervised cross-domain Re-ID task, and the proposed MMN achieves competitive results.

Towards Embodied Scene Description

Embodiment is an important characteristic for all intelligent agents (creatures and robots), while existing scene description tasks mainly focus on analyzing images passively and the semantic understanding of the scenario is separated from the interaction between the agent and the environment. In this work, we propose the Embodied Scene Description, which exploits the embodiment ability of the agent to find an optimal viewpoint in its environment for scene description tasks. A learning framework with the paradigms of imitation learning and reinforcement learning is established to teach the intelligent agent to generate corresponding sensorimotor activities. The proposed framework is tested on both the AI2Thor dataset and a real world robotic platform demonstrating the effectiveness and extendability of the developed method.

Diversity Transfer Network for Few-Shot Learning

Few-shot learning is a challenging task that aims at training a classifier for unseen classes with only a few training examples. The main difficulty of few-shot learning lies in the lack of intra-class diversity within insufficient training samples. To alleviate this problem, we propose a novel generative framework, Diversity Transfer Network (DTN), that learns to transfer latent diversities from known categories and composite them with support features to generate diverse samples for novel categories in feature space. The learning problem of the sample generation (i.e., diversity transfer) is solved via minimizing an effective meta-classification loss in a single-stage network, instead of the generative loss in previous works. Besides, an organized auxiliary task co-training over known categories is proposed to stabilize the meta-training process of DTN. We perform extensive experiments and ablation studies on three datasets, i.e., \emph{mini}ImageNet, CIFAR100 and CUB. The results show that DTN, with single-stage training and faster convergence speed, obtains the state-of-the-art results among the feature generation based few-shot learning methods.
