Engineering reconfigurable flow patterns via surface-driven light-controlled active matter

Surface-driven flows are ubiquitous in nature, from subcellular cytoplasmic streaming to organ-scale ciliary arrays. Here, we model how confined geometries can be used to engineer complex hydrodynamic patterns driven by activity prescribed solely on the boundary. Specifically, we simulate light-controlled surface-driven active matter, probing the emergent properties of a suspension of active colloids that can bind and unbind pre-patterned surfaces of a closed microchamber, together creating an active carpet. The attached colloids generate large scale flows that in turn can advect detached particles towards the walls. Switching the particle velocities with light, we program the active suspension and demonstrate a rich design space of flow patterns characterised by topological defects. We derive the possible mode structures and use this theory to optimise different microfluidic functions including hydrodynamic compartmentalisation and chaotic mixing. Our results pave the way towards designing and controlling surface-driven active fluids.

Algorithmic Lattice Kirigami: A Route to Pluripotent Materials

We use a regular arrangement of kirigami elements to demonstrate an inverse design paradigm for folding a flat surface into complex target configurations. We first present a scheme using arrays of disclination defect pairs on the dual to the honeycomb lattice; by arranging these defect pairs properly with respect to each other and choosing an appropriate fold pattern a target stepped surface can be designed. We then present a more general method that specifies a fixed lattice of kirigami cuts to be performed on a flat sheet. This single "pluripotent" lattice of cuts permits a wide variety of target surfaces to be programmed into the sheet by changing the folding directions.

Making the Cut: Lattice Kirigami Rules

In this paper we explore and develop a simple set of rules that apply to cutting, pasting, and folding honeycomb lattices. We consider origami-like structures that are extinsically flat away from zero-dimensional sources of Gaussian curvature and one-dimensional sources of mean curvature, and our cutting and pasting rules maintain the intrinsic bond lengths on both the lattice and its dual lattice. We find that a small set of rules is allowed providing a framework for exploring and building kirigami -- folding, cutting, and pasting the edges of paper.

Stacking Textures and Singularities in Bilayer Graphene

We study a family of globally smooth spatially varying two dimensional stacking textures in bilayer graphene. We find that the strain-minimizing stacking patterns connecting inequivalent ground states with local $AB$ and $BA$ interlayer registries are two dimensional twisted textures of an interlayer displacement field. We construct and display these topological stacking textures for bilayer graphene, examine their interactions and develop the composition rules that allow us to represent other more complex stacking textures, including globally twisted graphenes and extended one dimensional domain walls.
