Dual Adversarial Adaptation for Cross-Device Real-World Image Super-Resolution

Due to the sophisticated imaging process, an identical scene captured by different cameras could exhibit distinct imaging patterns, introducing distinct proficiency among the super-resolution (SR) models trained on images from different devices. In this paper, we investigate a novel and practical task coded cross-device SR, which strives to adapt a real-world SR model trained on the paired images captured by one camera to low-resolution (LR) images captured by arbitrary target devices. The proposed task is highly challenging due to the absence of paired data from various imaging devices. To address this issue, we propose an unsupervised domain adaptation mechanism for real-world SR, named Dual ADversarial Adaptation (DADA), which only requires LR images in the target domain with available real paired data from a source camera. DADA employs the Domain-Invariant Attention (DIA) module to establish the basis of target model training even without HR supervision. Furthermore, the dual framework of DADA facilitates an Inter-domain Adversarial Adaptation (InterAA) in one branch for two LR input images from two domains, and an Intra-domain Adversarial Adaptation (IntraAA) in two branches for an LR input image. InterAA and IntraAA together improve the model transferability from the source domain to the target. We empirically conduct experiments under six Real to Real adaptation settings among three different cameras, and achieve superior performance compared with existing state-of-the-art approaches. We also evaluate the proposed DADA to address the adaptation to the video camera, which presents a promising research topic to promote the wide applications of real-world super-resolution. Convection-Induced Singularity Suppression in the Keller-Segel and Other Non-linear PDEs

In this paper we study the effect of the addition of a convective term, and of the resulting increased dissipation rate, on the growth of solutions to a general class of non-linear parabolic PDEs. In particular, we show that blow-up in these models can always be prevented if the added drift has a small enough dissipation time. We also prove a general result relating the dissipation time and the effective diffusivity of stationary cellular flows, which allows us to obtain examples of simple incompressible flows with arbitrarily small dissipation times. As an application, we show that blow-up in the Keller-Segel model of chemotaxis can always be prevented if the velocity field of the ambient fluid has a sufficiently small dissipation time. We also study reaction-diffusion equations with ignition-type nonlinearities, and show that the reaction can always be quenched by the addition of a convective term with a small enough dissipation time, provided the average initial temperature is initially below the ignition threshold.

Stability of Blow Up for a 1D model of Axisymmetric 3D Euler Equation

The question of the global regularity vs finite time blow up in solutions of the 3D incompressible Euler equation is a major open problem of modern applied analysis. In this paper, we study a class of one-dimensional models of the axisymmetric hyperbolic boundary blow up scenario for the 3D Euler equation proposed by Hou and Luo based on extensive numerical simulations. These models generalize the 1D Hou-Luo model suggested in Hou & Luo's paper, for which finite time blow up has been established in the paper by Kyudong Choi, Thomas Y. Hou, Alexander Kiselev, Guo Luo, Vladimir Sverak, Yao Yao. The main new aspects of this work are twofold. First, we establish finite time blow up for a model that is a closer approximation of the three dimensional case than the original Hou-Luo model, in the sense that it contains relevant lower order terms in the Biot-Savart law that have been discarded in the paper by Hou & Luo's and the paper by Choi et al.. Secondly, we show that the blow up mechanism is quite robust, by considering a broader family of models with the same main term as in the Hou-Luo model. Such blow up stability result may be useful in further work on understanding the 3D hyperbolic blow up scenario.

Suppression of chemotactic explosion by mixing

Chemotaxis plays a crucial role in a variety of processes in biology and ecology. In many instances, processes involving chemical attraction take place in fluids. One of the most studied PDE models of chemotaxis is given by Keller-Segel equation, which describes a population density of bacteria or mold which attract chemically to substance they secrete. Solution of Keller-Segel equation can exhibit dramatic collapsing behavior, where the density concentrates positive mass in a measure zero region. A natural question is whether presence of fluid flow can affect singularity formation by mixing the density thus making concentration harder to achieve. In this paper, we consider parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel equation in two and three dimensions with additional advection term modeling ambient fluid flow. We prove that for any initial data, there exist incompressible fluid flows such that the solution to the equation stays globally regular. On the other hand, it is well known that when the fluid flow is absent, there exist initial data leading to finite time blow up. Thus presence of fluid can prevent the singularity formation. We discuss two classes of flows that have the explosion arresting property. Both classes are known as very efficient mixers. The first class are relaxation enhancing (RE) flow. These flows are stationary. The second class of flows are Yao-Zlatos optimal mixing flows, which are time dependent. The proof is based on the nonlinear version of the relaxation enhancement construction of the paper by Peter Constantin, Alexander Kiselev, Lenya Ryzhik, Andrej Zlatos, and on some variations of global regularity estimate for Keller-Segel model.

Lower bounds on the mix norm of passive scalars advected by incompressible enstrophy-constrained flows

Consider a diffusion-free passive scalar $θ$ being mixed by an incompressible flow $u$ on the torus $\mathbb{T}^d$. Our aim is to study how well this scalar can be mixed under an enstrophy constraint on the advecting velocity field. Our main result shows that the mix-norm ($||θ(t)||_{H^{-1}}$) is bounded below by an exponential function of time. The exponential decay rate we obtain is not universal and depends on the size of the support of the initial data. We also perform numerical simulations and confirm that the numerically observed decay rate scales similarly to the rigorous lower bound, at least for a significant initial period of time. The main idea behind our proof is to use recent work of Crippa and DeLellis ('08) making progress towards the resolution of Bressan's rearrangement cost conjecture.
