Logistics in the Sky: A Two-phase Optimization Approach for the Drone Package Pickup and Delivery System

The application of drones in the last-mile distribution is a research hotspot in recent years. Different from the previous urban distribution mode that depends on trucks, this paper proposes a novel package pick-up and delivery mode and system in which multiple drones collaborate with automatic devices. The proposed mode uses free areas on the top of residential buildings to set automatic devices as delivery and pick-up points of packages, and employs drones to transport packages between buildings and depots. Integrated scheduling problem of package drop-pickup considering m-drone, m-depot, m-customer is crucial for the system. We propose a simulated-annealing-based two-phase optimization approach (SATO) to solve this problem. In the first phase, tasks are allocated to depots for serving, such that the initial problem is decomposed into multiple single depot scheduling problems with m-drone. In the second phase, considering the drone capability constraints and task demand constraints, we generate the route planning scheme for drones in each depot. Concurrently, an improved variable neighborhood descent algorithm (IVND) is designed in the first phase to reallocate tasks, and a local search algorithm (LS) are proposed to search the high-quality solution in the second phase. Finally, extensive experiments and comparative studies are conducted to test the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Experiments indicate that the proposed SATO-IVND can reduce the cost by more than 14% in a reasonable time compared with several other peer algorithms.

Sharp estimate of electric field from a conductive rod and application

We are concerned with the quantitative study of the electric field perturbation due to the presence of an inhomogeneous conductive rod embedded in a homogenous conductivity. We sharply quantify the dependence of the perturbed electric field on the geometry of the conductive rod. In particular, we accurately characterise the localisation of the gradient field (i.e. the electric current) near the boundary of the rod where the curvature is sufficiently large. We develop layer-potential techniques in deriving the quantitative estimates and the major difficulty comes from the anisotropic geometry of the rod.The result complements and sharpens several existing studies in the literature. It also generates an interesting application in EIT (electrical impedance tomography) in determining the conductive rod by a single measurement, which is also known as the Calderon's inverse inclusion problem in the literature.

Numerical implementation for reconstruction of inhomogeneous conductivities via Generalized Polarization Tensors

This paper deals with numerical methods for reconstruction of inhomogeneous conductivities. We use the concept of Generalized Polarization Tensors, which were introduced in [3], to do reconstruction. Basic resolution and stability analysis are presented. Least square norm methods with respect to Generalized Polarization Tensors are used for reconstruction of conductivities. Finally, reconstruction of three different types of conductivities in the plane is demonstrated.

Numerical methods for reconstruction of source term of heat equation from the final overdetermination

This paper deals with the numerical methods for the reconstruction of source term in linear parabolic equation from final overdetermination. We assume that the source term has the form f(x)h(t) and h(t) is given, which guarantees the uniqueness of the inverse problem for determining the source term $f(x)$ from final overdetermination. We present the numerical methods for both free boundary and Neumann boundary situations. Moreover, we show that the solution of the boundary conditions problem has the form of the free boundary solution problem by using the extension method. Numerical experiments are done for the inverse problem with the boundary conditions.

Explicit calculation of strong solution on linear parabolic equation

In this paper, we give the existence and uniqueness of the strong solution of one dimensional linear parabolic equation with mixed boundary conditions. The boundary conditions can be any kind of mixed Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin boundary conditions. We use the extension method to get the unique solution. Furthermore, the method can also be easily implemented as a numerical method. Some simple examples are presented.

Plasmon resonance and heat generation model in nanostructures

In this paper, we investigate the photothermal effects of the plasmon resonance. Metal nanoparticles efficiently generate heat in the presence of electromagnetic radiation. The process is strongly enhanced when a fixed frequency of the incident wave illuminate on nanoprticles such that plasmon resonance happen. We shall introduce the electromagnetic radiation model and show exactly how and when the plasmon resonance happen. We then construct the heat generation and transfer model and derive the heat effect induced by plasmon resonance. Finally, we consider the heat generation under plasmon resonance in a concentric nanoshell structure.
