An Empirical Study of Methods for Small Object Detection from Satellite Imagery

This paper reviews object detection methods for finding small objects from remote sensing imagery and provides an empirical evaluation of four state-of-the-art methods to gain insights into method performance and technical challenges. In particular, we use car detection from urban satellite images and bee box detection from satellite images of agricultural lands as application scenarios. Drawing from the existing surveys and literature, we identify several top-performing methods for the empirical study. Public, high-resolution satellite image datasets are used in our experiments.

Optimal subsampling algorithm for composite quantile regression with distributed data

For massive data stored at multiple machines, we propose a distributed subsampling procedure for the composite quantile regression. By establishing the consistency and asymptotic normality of the composite quantile regression estimator from a general subsampling algorithm, we derive the optimal subsampling probabilities and the optimal allocation sizes under the L-optimality criteria. A two-step algorithm to approximate the optimal subsampling procedure is developed. The proposed methods are illustrated through numerical experiments on simulated and real datasets.

A gridded establishment dataset as a proxy for economic activity in China

Measuring the geographical distribution of economic activity plays a key role in scientific research and policymaking. However, previous studies and data on economic activity either have a coarse spatial resolution or cover a limited time span, and the high-resolution characteristics of socioeconomic dynamics are largely unknown. Here, we construct a dataset on the economic activity of mainland China, the gridded establishment dataset (GED), which measures the volume of establishments at a 0.01$^{\circ}$ latitude by 0.01$^{\circ}$ longitude scale. Specifically, our dataset captures the geographically based opening and closing of approximately 25.5 million firms that registered in mainland China over the period 2005-2015. The characteristics of fine granularity and long-term observability give the GED a high application value. The dataset not only allows us to quantify the spatiotemporal patterns of the establishments, urban vibrancy and socioeconomic activity, but also helps us uncover the fundamental principles underlying the dynamics of industrial and economic development.

GL-GAN: Adaptive Global and Local Bilevel Optimization model of Image Generation

Although Generative Adversarial Networks have shown remarkable performance in image generation, there are some challenges in image realism and convergence speed. The results of some models display the imbalances of quality within a generated image, in which some defective parts appear compared with other regions. Different from general single global optimization methods, we introduce an adaptive global and local bilevel optimization model(GL-GAN). The model achieves the generation of high-resolution images in a complementary and promoting way, where global optimization is to optimize the whole images and local is only to optimize the low-quality areas. With a simple network structure, GL-GAN is allowed to effectively avoid the nature of imbalance by local bilevel optimization, which is accomplished by first locating low-quality areas and then optimizing them. Moreover, by using feature map cues from discriminator output, we propose the adaptive local and global optimization method(Ada-OP) for specific implementation and find that it boosts the convergence speed. Compared with the current GAN methods, our model has shown impressive performance on CelebA, CelebA-HQ and LSUN datasets.

Varied fusion reaction probability induced by ion stopping modification in laser-driven plasma with different temperature

The dynamics of nuclear reaction in plasma is a fundamental issue in many high energy density researches, such as the astrophysical reactions and the inertial confinement fusion. The effective reaction cross-sections and ion stopping power in plasma need to be taken into account to analyze the reactivity. In this research, we have experimentally investigated the from D-D reactions from interactions between deuteron beams and deuterated polystyrene (CD) plasma, driven by two laser pulses respectively. The neutron yields, plasma density and deuteron energy loss in plasma have been measured, and the plasma temperature and deuteron stopping power have been analyzed from simulations. It is shown that, compared with a cold target, the reaction probability in plasma conditions can be enhanced or suppressed, which is ascribed to the deuteron stopping power modifications in plasma. In hotter CD plasma, the energy loss of moderate energetic deuterons reduces, which leads to higher D-D reaction probability, while the contrary happens in colder plasma. This work provides new understanding of fusion reactions in plasma environment.

An efficient and doubly robust empirical likelihood approach for estimating equations with missing data

This paper considers an empirical likelihood inference for parameters defined by general estimating equations, when data are missing at random. The efficiency of existing estimators depends critically on correctly specifying the conditional expectation of the estimating function given the observed components of the random observations. When the conditional expectation is not correctly specified, the efficiency of estimation can be severely compromised even if the propensity function (of missingness) is correctly specified. We propose an efficient estimator which enjoys the double-robustness property and can achieve the semiparametric efficiency bound within the class of the estimating functions that are generated by the estimating function of estimating equations, if both the propensity model and the regression model (of the conditional expectation) are specified correctly. Moreover, if the propensity model is specified correctly but the regression model is misspecified, the proposed estimator still achieves a semiparametric efficiency lower bound within a more general class of estimating functions. Simulation results suggest that the proposed estimators are robust against misspecification of the propensity model or regression model and outperform many existing competitors in the sense of having smaller mean-square errors. Moreover, using our approach for statistical inference requires neither resampling nor kernel smoothing. A real data example is used to illustrate the proposed approach.
