Multi-UE Multi-AP Beam Alignment in User-Centric Cell-Free Massive MIMO Systems Operating at mmWave

This paper considers the problem of beam alignment in a cell-free massive MIMO deployment with multiple access points (APs) and multiple user equipments (UEs) simultaneously operating in the same millimeter wave frequency band. Assuming the availability of a control channel at sub-6 GHz frequencies, a protocol is developed that permits estimating, for each UE, the strongest propagation path from each of the surrounding APs, and to perform user-centric association between the UEs and the APs. Estimation of the strongest paths from nearby APs is realized at the UE in a one-phase procedure, during which all the APs simultaneously transmit on pseudo-randomly selected channels with pseudo-random transmit beamformers. An algorithm for orthogonal channels assignment to the APs is also proposed, with the aim of minimizing the mutual interference between APs that transmit on the same channels. The performance of the proposed strategy is evaluated both in terms of probability of correct detection of the directions of arrival and of departure associated to the strongest beam from nearby APs, and in terms of downlink and uplink signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio. Numerical results show that the proposed approach is effective and capable of efficiently realizing beam alignment in a multi-UE multi-AP wireless scenario.

A computational approach to the twin paradox in curved spacetime

Despite being a major component in the teaching of special relativity, the twin `paradox' is generally not examined in courses on general relativity. Due to the complexity of analytical solutions to the problem, the paradox is often neglected entirely, and students are left with an incomplete understanding of the relativistic behaviour of time. This article outlines a project, undertaken by undergraduate physics students at the University of Sydney, in which a novel computational method was derived in order to predict the time experienced by a twin following a number of paths between two given spacetime coordinates. By utilising this method, it is possible to make clear to students that following a geodesic in curved spacetime does not always result in the greatest experienced proper time.

An Automatic Machine Translation Evaluation Metric Based on Dependency Parsing Model

Most of the syntax-based metrics obtain the similarity by comparing the sub-structures extracted from the trees of hypothesis and reference. These sub-structures are defined by human and can't express all the information in the trees because of the limited length of sub-structures. In addition, the overlapped parts between these sub-structures are computed repeatedly. To avoid these problems, we propose a novel automatic evaluation metric based on dependency parsing model, with no need to define sub-structures by human. First, we train a dependency parsing model by the reference dependency tree. Then we generate the hypothesis dependency tree and the corresponding probability by the dependency parsing model. The quality of the hypothesis can be judged by this probability. In order to obtain the lexicon similarity, we also introduce the unigram F-score to the new metric. Experiment results show that the new metric gets the state-of-the-art performance on system level, and is comparable with METEOR on sentence level.

Improve the Evaluation of Fluency Using Entropy for Machine Translation Evaluation Metrics

The widely-used automatic evaluation metrics cannot adequately reflect the fluency of the translations. The n-gram-based metrics, like BLEU, limit the maximum length of matched fragments to n and cannot catch the matched fragments longer than n, so they can only reflect the fluency indirectly. METEOR, which is not limited by n-gram, uses the number of matched chunks but it does not consider the length of each chunk. In this paper, we propose an entropy-based method, which can sufficiently reflect the fluency of translations through the distribution of matched words. This method can easily combine with the widely-used automatic evaluation metrics to improve the evaluation of fluency. Experiments show that the correlations of BLEU and METEOR are improved on sentence level after combining with the entropy-based method on WMT 2010 and WMT 2012.

Novel Photovoltaic Phenomenon in Manganite/ZnO Heterostructure

In this paper, we report a novel photovoltaic phenomenon in a low cost manganite/ZnO p-n heterojunction grown on ITO glass substrate by pulsed laser depositon (PLD) under relative low growth temperature. The heterostructure ITO/La0.62Ca0.29K0.09MnO3(LCKMO)/ZnO/Al exhibits reproducible rectifying characteristics and consists of four parts: aluminum top electrode, ITO bottom electrode, manganite and ZnO semiconductor films. Moreover, the light current can generate under continuous laser (λ=325nm) irradiation. In this article, we investigate the influence of manganite and ZnO film thickness on the electrical and photoelectric characteristics of the heterostructure at room temperature. The maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) is achieved not only when the LCKMO and ZnO layer is thin enough, but also when the full space charge layer is sufficient. We obtain the maximum value(0.0145%) of PCE when the thickness of LCKMO and ZnO layer is 25nm and 150nm, respectively. Under this condition, the open circuit voltage is 0.04V, which can be attributed to internal photoemission.
