Impact of Nuclear Reaction Rates on Calcium Production in Population III Stars: A Global Analysis

We investigate the sensitivity of calcium production to nuclear reaction rates of a 40 solar-mass Population III star using 1D multi-zone stellar models. A comprehensive nuclear reaction network was constructed, and all $(p,γ)$ and $(p,α)$ reaction rates were individually varied by a factor of 10 up and down, identifying 13 preliminary key reactions for calcium production. To propagate the reaction rate uncertainties on calcium production, two sets of Monte Carlo simulations were performed for these key reactions: one adopting STARLIB reaction rates and the other incorporating updated rates from recent experimental data and evaluations. Our results show that Monte Carlo simulations using the updated rates show good agreement with the observed calcium abundance of the extremely iron-poor star SMSS J031300.36-670839.3 within the 68% confidence interval predicted by the models. In contrast, the observed calcium abundance lies marginally outside the 68% C.I. when using the STARLIB rates. Spearman rank-order correlation analysis and SHAP values show that the $(p,γ)$ and $(p,α)$ reactions of F18 and F19 exhibit strong coupled effects on calcium production. These reaction-rate uncertainties need to be reduced to constrain the stellar model predictions. Our study provides insights for future nuclear physics experiments aimed at reducing reaction rate uncertainties in the nucleosynthesis of Population III Stars. Additionally, comparisons between 20 solar-mass and 40 solar-mass Population III stellar models confirm that the latter, with updated reaction rates, is more capable of reproducing the observed Ca abundance and [Ca/Mg] ratio.

Contribution of collapsars, supernovae, and neutron star mergers to the evolution of r-process elements in the Galaxy

We study the evolution of rapid neutron-capture process (r-process) isotopes in the Galaxy. We analyze relative contributions from core collapse supernovae (CCSNe), neutron star mergers (NSMs) and collapsars under a range of astrophysical conditions and nuclear input data. Although the r-process in each of these sites can lead to similar (or differing) isotopic abundances, our simulations reveal that the early contribution of r-process material to the Galaxy was dominated by CCSNe and collapsar r-process nucleosynthesis, while the NSM contribution is unavoidably delayed even under the assumption of the shortest possible minimum merger time.

An efficient method for mapping the 12C+12C molecular resonances at low energies

The 12C+12C fusion reaction is famous for its complication of molecular resonances, and plays an important role in both nuclear structure and astrophysics. It is extremely difficult to measure the cross sections of 12C+12C fusions at energies of astrophysical relevance due to very low reaction yields. To measure the complicated resonant structure existing in this important reaction, an efficient thick target method has been developed and applied for the first time at energies Ec.m.<5.3 MeV. A scan of the cross sections over a relatively wide range of energies can be carried out using only a single beam energy. The result of measurement at Ec.m.= 4.1 MeV is compared with other results from previous work. This method would be useful for searching potentially existing resonances of 12C+12C in the energy range 1 MeV<Ec.m.<3 MeV.

Giant-diamagnetic and magnetization-step effects in HgMnTe monocrystal

In Hg$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$Te (x$\geq$0.16) monocrystal, the giant-diamagnetic (GDM) and magnetization-step phenomena have been observed in spin glass (SG) regime. The susceptibility of GDM is about 100-1000 times than that of classic diamagnetic. It can be interpreted that: due to the long-range antiferromagnetic (AF) exchange interactions and the non-uniform random distribution of Mn$^{2+}$ ions in Hg$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$Te, a quasi-static spin wave forms and produces the GDM phenomenon below the critical temperature and magnetic field. Meanwhile, this theory is proved by Monte Carlo simulations in a two-dimensional AF cluster based on XY model. Hence, it is possible to emerge long-range magnetic order structure in SG state.
