Cellular Communications in Ocean Waves for Maritime Internet of Things

The rapid advancement of Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G and beyond technologies are transforming the marine industry and research. Our understanding of the vast sea that covers 71% of the Earth's surface is being enhanced by the various ocean sensor networks equipped with effective communications technologies. In this paper, we begin with a review of the research and development status-quo of maritime IoT (MIoT) enabled by multiple wireless communication technologies. Then we study the impact of sea waves to radio propagation and the communications link quality. Due to the severe attenuation of sea water to radio frequency electromagnetic waves propagation, large ocean waves can easily block the communications link between a buoy sensor and a cell tower near shore. This paper for the first time uses the ocean wave modeling of coastal and oceanic waters to examine the line of sight communications condition. Real wave measurement data parameters are applied in the numerical evaluation of the developed model. Finally, the critical antenna design taking into account the wave impact is numerically studied with implementation solutions proposed, and the system hardware and protocol aspects are discussed.

Channel Estimation and Hybrid Precoding for Distributed Phased Arrays Based MIMO Wireless Communications

Distributed phased arrays based multiple-input multiple-output (DPA-MIMO) is a newly introduced architecture that enables both spatial multiplexing and beamforming while facilitating highly reconfigurable hardware implementation in millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequency bands. With a DPA-MIMO system, we focus on channel state information (CSI) acquisition and hybrid precoding. As benefited from a coordinated and open-loop pilot beam pattern design, all the sub-arrays can perform channel sounding with less training overhead compared with the traditional orthogonal operation of each sub-array. Furthermore, two sparse channel recovery algorithms, known as joint orthogonal matching pursuit (JOMP) and joint sparse Bayesian learning with $\ell_2$ reweighting (JSBL-$\ell_2$), are proposed to exploit the hidden structured sparsity in the beam-domain channel vector. Finally, successive interference cancellation (SIC) based hybrid precoding through sub-array grouping is illustrated for the DPA-MIMO system, which decomposes the joint sub-array RF beamformer design into an interactive per-sub-array-group handle. Simulation results show that the proposed two channel estimators fully take advantage of the partial coupling characteristic of DPA-MIMO channels to perform channel recovery, and the proposed hybrid precoding algorithm is suitable for such array-of-sub-arrays architecture with satisfactory performance and low complexity.

Deep Q-Network Based Dynamic Movement Strategy in a UAV-Assisted Network

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted communications is a promising solution to improve the performance of future wireless networks, where UAVs are deployed as base stations for enhancing the quality of service (QoS) provided to ground users when traditional terrestrial base stations are unavailable or not sufficient. An effective framework is proposed in this paper to manage the dynamic movement of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in response to ground user mobility, with the objective to maximize the sum data rate of the ground users. First, we discuss the relationship between the air-to-ground (A2G) path loss (PL) and the location of UAVs. Then a deep Q-network (DQN) based method is proposed to adjust the locations of UAVs to maximize the sum data rate of the user equipment (UE). Finally, simulation results show that the proposed method is capable of adjusting UAV locations in a real-time condition to improve the QoS of the entire network.

Multi-cell Edge Coverage Enhancement Using Mobile UAV-Relay

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted communication is a promising technology in future wireless communication networks. UAVs can not only help offload data traffic from ground base stations (GBSs), but also improve the quality of service of cell-edge users (CEUs). In this paper, we consider the enhancement of cell-edge communications through a mobile relay, i.e., UAV, in multi-cell networks. During each transmission period, GBSs first send data to the UAV, and then the UAV forwards its received data to CEUs according to a certain association strategy. In order to maximize the sum rate of all CEUs, we jointly optimize the UAV mobility management, including trajectory, velocity, and acceleration, and association strategy of CEUs to the UAV, subject to minimum rate requirements of CEUs, mobility constraints of the UAV and causal buffer constraints in practice. To address the mixed-integer nonconvex problem, we transform it into two convex subproblems by applying tight bounds and relaxations. An iterative algorithm was proposed to solve the two subproblems in an alternating manner. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm achieves higher rates of CEUs as compared with existing benchmark schemes.

QoS-Compliant 3D Deployment Optimization Strategy for UAV Base Stations

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is being integrated as an active element in 5G and beyond networks. Because of its flexibility and mobility, UAV base stations (UAV-BSs) can be deployed according to the ground user distributions and their quality of service (QoS) requirement. Although there has been quite some prior research on the UAV deployment, no work has studied this problem in a 3 dimensional (3D) setting and taken into account the UAV-BS capacity limit and the quality of service (QoS) requirements of ground users. Therefore, in this paper, we focus on the problem of deploying UAV-BSs to provide satisfactory wireless communication services, with the aim to maximize the total number of covered user equipment (UE) subject to user data rate requirements and UAV-BSs' capacity limit. First, we model the relationship between the air-to-ground (A2G) path loss (PL) and the location of UAV-BSs in both horizontal and vertical dimensions which has not been considered in previous works. Unlike the conventional UAV deployment problem formulation, the 3D deployment problem is decoupled into a 2D horizontal placement and altitude determination connected by path loss requirement and minimization. Then, we propose a novel genetic algorithm (GA) based 2D placement approach in which UAV-BSs are placed to have maximum coverage of the users with consideration of data rate distribution. Finally, numerical and simulation results show that the proposed approach has enabled a better coverage percentage comparing with other schemes.

Downlink Performance of Pilot-Reused HetNet with Large-Scale Antenna Arrays

Considering a heterogeneous network (HetNet) where both macro base station (BS) and small cell (SC) nodes are equipped with massive antennas, this paper studies the performance for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) downlinks when the macro and small cells share the same spectrum and hence interfere with each other. Suppose that the large-scale antenna arrays at both macro BS and SC nodes employ maximum-ratio transmission (MRT) or zero-forcing transmission (ZFT) precoding, and transmit data streams to the served users simultaneously. A new pilot reuse pattern among SCs is proposed for channel estimation. Taking into account imperfect channel state information (CSI), capacity lower bounds for MRT and ZFT are derived, respectively, in closed-form expressions involving only statistical CSI. Then asymptotic analyses for massive arrays are presented under specific power scaling laws. Subsequently, two user scheduling algorithms, greedy scheduling algorithm and asymptotical scheduling algorithm (ASA), are proposed based on derived capacity lower bounds and asymptotic analyses, respectively. ASA is demonstrated to be a near optimal in the asymptotic regime and has low complexity. Finally, the derived closed-form expressions are verified to be accurate predictors of the system performance by Monte-Carlo simulations. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of asymptotic analysis and proposed user scheduling schemes.

Hierarchical Online Intrusion Detection for SCADA Networks

We propose a novel hierarchical online intrusion detection system (HOIDS) for supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) networks based on machine learning algorithms. By utilizing the server-client topology while keeping clients distributed for global protection, high detection rate is achieved with minimum network impact. We implement accurate models of normal-abnormal binary detection and multi-attack identification based on logistic regression and quasi-Newton optimization algorithm using the Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno approach. The detection system is capable of accelerating detection by information gain based feature selection or principle component analysis based dimension reduction. By evaluating our system using the KDD99 dataset and the industrial control system dataset, we demonstrate that HOIDS is highly scalable, efficient and cost effective for securing SCADA infrastructures.

MSE-based Precoding for MIMO Downlinks in Heterogeneous Networks

Considering a heterogeneous network (HetNet) system consisting of a macro tier overlaid with a second tier of small cells (SCs), this paper studies the mean square error (MSE) based precoding design to be employed by the macro base station and the SC nodes for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) downlinks. First, a new sum-MSE of all users based minimization problem is proposed aiming to design a set of macro cell (MC) and SC transmit precoding matrices or vectors. To solve it, two different algorithms are presented. One is via a relaxed-constraints based alternating optimization (RAO) realized by efficient alternating optimization and relaxing non-convex constraints to convex ones. The other is via an unconstrained alternating optimization with normalization (UAON) implemented by introducing the constraints into the iterations with the normalization operation. Second, a separate MSE minimization based precoding is proposed by considering the signal and interference terms corresponding to the macro tier and the SCs separately. Simulation results show that the sum-MSE based RAO algorithm provides the best MSE performance among the proposed schemes under a number of system configurations. When the number of antennas at the macro-BS is sufficiently large, the MSE of the separate MSE-based precoding is found to approach that of RAO and surpass that of UAON. Together, this paper provides a suite of three new precoding techniques that is expected to meet the need in a broad range of HetNet environments with adequate balance between performance and complexity.

Multipair Massive MIMO Relaying with Pilot-Data Transmission Overlay

We propose a pilot-data transmission overlay scheme for multipair massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relaying systems employing either half- or full-duplex (HD or FD) communications at the relay station (RS). In the proposed scheme, pilots are transmitted in partial overlap with data to decrease the channel estimation overhead. The RS can detect the source data with minimal destination pilot interference by exploiting the asymptotic orthogonality of massive MIMO channels. Then pilot-data interference can be effectively suppressed with assistance of the detected source data in the destination channel estimation. Due to the transmission overlay, the effective data period is extended, hence improving system throughput. Both theoretical and simulation results confirm that the proposed pilot-data overlay scheme outperforms the conventional separate pilot-data design in the limited coherence time interval scenario. Moreover, asymptotic analyses at high and low SNR regions demonstrate the superiority of the proposed scheme regardless of the coherence interval length. Because of simultaneous transmission, the proper allocation of source data transmission and relay data forwarding power can further improve the system performance. Hence a power allocation problem is formulated and a successive convex approximation approach is proposed to solve the non-convex optimization problem with the FD pilot-data transmission overlay.

Power Allocation for Multi-Pair Massive MIMO Two-Way AF Relaying with Linear Processing

In this paper, we consider a multi-pair two-way amplify-and-forward relaying system where multiple sources exchange information via a relay node equipped with large-scale antenna arrays. Given that channel estimation is non-ideal, and that the relay employs either maximum-ratio combining/maximum-ratio transmission (MRC/MRT) or zero-forcing reception/zero-forcing transmission (ZFR/ZFT) beamforming, we derive two corresponding closed-form lower bound expressions for the ergodic achievable rate of each pair sources. The closed-form expressions enable us to design an optimal power allocation (OPA) scheme that maximizes the sum spectral efficiency under certain practical constraints. As the antenna array size tends to infinity and the signal to noise ratios become very large, asymptotically optimal power allocation schemes in simple closed-form are derived. The capacity lower bounds are verified to be accurate predictors of the system performance by simulations, and the proposed OPA outperforms equal power allocation (EPA). It is also found that in the asymptotic regime, when MRC/MRT is used at the relay and the link end-to-end large-scale fading factors among all pairs are equal, the optimal power allocated to a user is inverse to the large-scale fading factor of the channel from the user to the relay, while OPA approaches EPA when ZFR/ZFT is adopted.

Hybrid Block Diagonalization for Massive Multiuser MIMO Systems

For a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, restricting the number of RF chains to far less than the number of antenna elements can significantly reduce the implementation cost compared to the full complexity RF chain configuration. In this paper, we consider the downlink communication of a massive multiuser MIMO (MU-MIMO) system and propose a low-complexity hybrid block diagonalization (Hy-BD) scheme to approach the capacity performance of the traditional BD processing method. We aim to harvest the large array gain through the phase-only RF precoding and combining and then digital BD processing is performed on the equivalent baseband channel. The proposed Hy-BD scheme is examined in both the large Rayleigh fading channels and millimeter wave (mmWave) channels. A performance analysis is further conducted for single-path channels and large number of transmit and receive antennas. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that our Hy-BD scheme, with a lower implementation and computational complexity, achieves a capacity performance that is close to (sometimes even higher than) that of the traditional high-dimensional BD processing.

Near-Optimal Hybrid Processing for Massive MIMO Systems via Matrix Decomposition

For the practical implementation of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, the hybrid processing (precoding/combining) structure is promising to reduce the high cost rendered by large number of RF chains of the traditional processing structure. The hybrid processing is performed through low-dimensional digital baseband processing combined with analog RF processing enabled by phase shifters. We propose to design hybrid RF and baseband precoders/combiners for multi-stream transmission in point-to-point massive MIMO systems, by directly decomposing the pre-designed unconstrained digital precoder/combiner of a large dimension. The constant amplitude constraint of analog RF processing results in the matrix decomposition problem non-convex. Based on an alternate optimization technique, the non-convex matrix decomposition problem can be decoupled into a series of convex sub-problems and effectively solved by restricting the phase increment of each entry in the RF precoder/combiner within a small vicinity of its preceding iterate. A singular value decomposition based technique is proposed to secure an initial point sufficiently close to the global solution of the original non-convex problem. Through simulation, the convergence of the alternate optimization for such a matrix decomposition based hybrid processing (MD-HP) scheme is examined, and the performance of the MD-HP scheme is demonstrated to be near-optimal.

Low-Complexity Hybrid Precoding in Massive Multiuser MIMO Systems

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is envisioned to offer considerable capacity improvement, but at the cost of high complexity of the hardware. In this paper, we propose a low-complexity hybrid precoding scheme to approach the performance of the traditional baseband zero-forcing (ZF) precoding (referred to as full-complexity ZF), which is considered a virtually optimal linear precoding scheme in massive MIMO systems. The proposed hybrid precoding scheme, named phased-ZF (PZF), essentially applies phase-only control at the RF domain and then performs a low-dimensional baseband ZF precoding based on the effective channel seen from baseband. Heavily quantized RF phase control up to $2$ bits of precision is also considered and shown to incur very limited degradation. The proposed scheme is simulated in both ideal Rayleigh fading channels and sparsely scattered millimeter wave (mmWave) channels, both achieving highly desirable performance.

MIMO Relaying Broadcast Channels with Linear Precoding and Quantized Channel State Information Feedback

Multi-antenna relaying has emerged as a promising technology to enhance the system performance in cellular networks. However, when precoding techniques are utilized to obtain multi-antenna gains, the system generally requires channel state information (CSI) at the transmitters. We consider a linear precoding scheme in a MIMO relaying broadcast channel with quantized CSI feedback from both two-hop links. With this scheme, each remote user feeds back its quantized CSI to the relay, and the relay sends back the quantized precoding information to the base station (BS). An upper bound on the rate loss due to quantized channel knowledge is first characterized. Then, in order to maintain the rate loss within a predetermined gap for growing SNRs, a strategy of scaling quantization quality of both two-hop links is proposed. It is revealed that the numbers of feedback bits of both links should scale linearly with the transmit power at the relay, while only the bit number of feedback from the relay to the BS needs to grow with the increasing transmit power at the BS. Numerical results are provided to verify the proposed strategy for feedback quality control.
