Quantitatively Designing Porous Copper Current Collectors for Lithium Metal Anode

Lithium metal has been an attractive candidate as a next generation anode material. Despite its popularity, stability issues of lithium in the liquid electrolyte and the formation of lithium whiskers have kept it from practical use. Three-dimensional (3D) current collectors have been proposed as an effective method to mitigate whiskers growth. Although extensive research efforts have been done, the effects of three key parameters of the 3D current collectors, namely the surface area, the tortuosity factor, and the surface chemistry, on the performance of lithium metal batteries remain elusive. Herein, we quantitatively studied the role of these three parameters by synthesizing four types of porous copper networks with different sizes of well-structured micro-channels. X-ray microscale computed tomography (micro-CT) allowed us to assess the surface area, the pore size and the tortuosity factor of the porous copper materials. A metallic Zn coating was also applied to study the influence of surface chemistry on the performance of the 3D current collectors. The effects of these parameters on the performance were studied in detail through Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Titration Gas Chromatography (TGC). Stochastic simulations further allowed us to interpret the role of the tortuosity factor in lithiation. By understanding these effects, the optimal range of the key parameters is found for the porous copper anodes and their performance is predicted. Using these parameters to inform the design of porous copper anodes for Li deposition, Coulombic efficiencies (CE) of up to 99.56% are achieved, thus paving the way for the design of effective 3D current collector systems.

$L^p$-estimates of maximal function related to Schrödinger Equation in $\mathbb{R}^2$

Using Guth's polynomial partitioning method, we obtain $L^p$ estimates for the maximal function associated to the solution of Schrödinger equation in $\mathbb R^2$. The $L^p$ estimates can be used to recover the previous best known result that $\lim_{t \to 0} e^{itΔ}f(x)=f(x)$ almost everywhere for all $f \in H^s (\mathbb{R}^2)$ provided that $s>3/8$.

Designable hybrid sonic crystals for transportation and division of acoustic images

Conventional sonic crystal (SC) devices designed for acoustic imaging can focus acoustic waves from an input source into only one image but not multi-images. Furthermore the output position of formed image cannot be designed at will. In this paper, we propose the hybrid SC imaging devices to achieve multi-images from one-source-input along with the designable image-positions. The proposed hybrid devices can image acoustic waves radiated both from point source and Gaussian beam, which different from conventional SC imaging devices that only applies to point source. These multi-functional but still simple and easy-to-fabricate devices are believed to find extensive applications, particularly in ultrasonic photography and compact acoustic imaging.

Discrete Fourier restriction associated with Schrodinger equations

In this paper, we present a different proof on the discrete Fourier restriction. The proof recovers Bourgain's level set result on Strichartz estimates associated with Schrödinger equations on torus. Some sharp estimates on $L^{\frac{2(d+2)}{d}}$ norm of certain exponential sums in higher dimensional cases are established. As an application, we show that some discrete multilinear maximal functions are bounded on $L^2(\mathbb Z)$.

On a Conjecture of EM Stein on the Hilbert Transform on Vector Fields

Let $ v$ be a smooth vector field on the plane, that is a map from the plane to the unit circle. We study sufficient conditions for the boundedness of the Hilbert transform \operatorname H_{v, ε}f(x) := \text{p.v.}\int_{-ε}^ εf(x-yv(x)) \frac{dy}y where $ ε$ is a suitably chosen parameter, determined by the smoothness properties of the vector field. It is a conjecture, due to E.\thinspace M.\thinspace Stein, that if $ v$ is Lipschitz, there is a positive $ ε$ for which the transform above is bounded on $ L ^{2}$. Our principal result gives a sufficient condition in terms of the boundedness of a maximal function associated to $ v$. This sufficient condition is that this new maximal function be bounded on some $ L ^{p}$, for some $ 1<p<2$. We show that the maximal function is bounded from $ L ^{2}$ to weak $ L ^{2}$ for all Lipschitz maximal function. The relationship between our results and other known sufficient conditions is explored.
