Nonlinear study of local ballooning mode near the separatrix

Small edge-localized-mode (ELM), similar to the quasi-continuous exhaust (QCE), has been achieved by increasing the density at the separatrix. Starting from the Type-I ELM experimental data in EAST, we have performed a numerical separatrix density scan to study the formation of the small ELM using BOUT++ 6-field 2-fluid module. In the high separatrix density case, localized collapse near the separatrix has been found. The corresponding ELM size, dominant mode number, and filament transport match the experimental observations of the QCE. Local ballooning mode near separatrix has been identified in the nonlinear simulation. The mode is driven by the local pressure gradient and the mode structure is constrained by the ExB shear.

Possibility of forming a stable Bose-Einstein condensate of $2\,^{3}\!S_1$ positronium atoms

The confined variational method in conjunction with the orthogonalizing pseudo-potential method and the stabilization method is used to study the low energy elastic scattering between two spin-polarized metastable positronium Ps(2\,$^{3}\!S_1$) atoms. Explicitly correlated Gaussian basis functions are adopted to properly describe the complicated Coulomb interaction among the four charged particles. The calculated $s$-wave scattering length ($\approx8.5\,a_0$) is positive, indicating the possibility of forming a stable Bose-Einstein condensate of fully spin-polarized $\text{Ps}(2\,^{3}\!S_1)$ atoms. Our results will open a new way of experimental realization of Ps condensate and development of $γ$-ray and $\text{Ps}(2\,^{3}\!S_1)$ atom lasers.

Response of a CMS HGCAL silicon-pad electromagnetic calorimeter prototype to 20-300 GeV positrons

The Compact Muon Solenoid Collaboration is designing a new high-granularity endcap calorimeter, HGCAL, to be installed later this decade. As part of this development work, a prototype system was built, with an electromagnetic section consisting of 14 double-sided structures, providing 28 sampling layers. Each sampling layer has an hexagonal module, where a multipad large-area silicon sensor is glued between an electronics circuit board and a metal baseplate. The sensor pads of approximately 1 cm$^2$ are wire-bonded to the circuit board and are readout by custom integrated circuits. The prototype was extensively tested with beams at CERN's Super Proton Synchrotron in 2018. Based on the data collected with beams of positrons, with energies ranging from 20 to 300 GeV, measurements of the energy resolution and linearity, the position and angular resolutions, and the shower shapes are presented and compared to a detailed Geant4 simulation.

The long-lived Type IIn SN 2015da: Infrared echoes and strong interaction within an extended massive shell

In this paper we report the results of the first $\sim$four years of spectroscopic and photometric monitoring of the Type IIn supernova SN 2015da (also known as PSN J13522411+3941286, or iPTF16tu). The supernova exploded in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 5337 in a relatively highly extinguished environment. The transient showed prominent narrow Balmer lines in emission at all times and a slow rise to maximum in all bands. In addition, early observations performed by amateur astronomers give a very well-constrained explosion epoch. The observables are consistent with continuous interaction between the supernova ejecta and a dense and extended H-rich circumstellar medium. The presence of such an extended and dense medium is difficult to reconcile with standard stellar evolution models, since the metallicity at the position of SN 2015da seems to be slightly subsolar. Interaction is likely the mechanism powering the light curve, as confirmed by the analysis of the pseudo bolometric light curve, which gives a total radiated energy $\gtrsim10^{51}\,\rm{erg}$. Modeling the light curve in the context of a supernova shock breakout through a dense circumstellar medium allowed us to infer the mass of the prexisting gas to be $\simeq8\,\rm{M_{\odot}}$, with an extreme mass-loss rate for the progenitor star $\simeq0.6\,\rm{M_{\odot}}\,\rm{yr^{-1}}$, suggesting that most of the circumstellar gas was produced during multiple eruptive events. Near- and mid-infrared observations reveal a flux excess in these domains, similar to those observed in SN 2010jl and other interacting transients, likely due to preexisting radiatively heated dust surrounding the supernova. By modeling the infrared excess, we infer a mass $\gtrsim0.4\times10^{-3}\,\rm{M_{\odot}}$ for the dust.

Design of geometric phase measurement in EAST Tokamak

The optimum scheme for geometric phase measurement in EAST Tokamak is proposed in this paper. The theoretical values of geometric phase for the probe beams of EAST Polarimeter-Interferometer (POINT) system are calculated by path integration in parameter space. Meanwhile, the influences of some controllable parameters on geometric phase are evaluated. The feasibility and challenge of distinguishing geometric effect in the POINT signal are also assessed in detail.

M31N 2008-12a - the remarkable recurrent nova in M31: Pan-chromatic observations of the 2015 eruption

The Andromeda Galaxy recurrent nova M31N 2008-12a had been observed in eruption ten times, including yearly eruptions from 2008-2014. With a measured recurrence period of $P_\mathrm{rec}=351\pm13$ days (we believe the true value to be half of this) and a white dwarf very close to the Chandrasekhar limit, M31N 2008-12a has become the leading pre-explosion supernova type Ia progenitor candidate. Following multi-wavelength follow-up observations of the 2013 and 2014 eruptions, we initiated a campaign to ensure early detection of the predicted 2015 eruption, which triggered ambitious ground and space-based follow-up programs. In this paper we present the 2015 detection; visible to near-infrared photometry and visible spectroscopy; and ultraviolet and X-ray observations from the Swift observatory. The LCOGT 2m (Hawaii) discovered the 2015 eruption, estimated to have commenced at Aug. $28.28\pm0.12$ UT. The 2013-2015 eruptions are remarkably similar at all wavelengths. New early spectroscopic observations reveal short-lived emission from material with velocities $\sim13000$ km s$^{-1}$, possibly collimated outflows. Photometric and spectroscopic observations of the eruption provide strong evidence supporting a red giant donor. An apparently stochastic variability during the early super-soft X-ray phase was comparable in amplitude and duration to past eruptions, but the 2013 and 2015 eruptions show evidence of a brief flux dip during this phase. The multi-eruption Swift/XRT spectra show tentative evidence of high-ionization emission lines above a high-temperature continuum. Following Henze et al. (2015a), the updated recurrence period based on all known eruptions is $P_\mathrm{rec}=174\pm10$ d, and we expect the next eruption of M31N 2008-12a to occur around mid-Sep. 2016.

A remarkable recurrent nova in M 31: The 2010 eruption recovered and evidence of a six-month period

The Andromeda Galaxy recurrent nova M31N 2008-12a has been caught in eruption nine times. Six observed eruptions in the seven years from 2008 to 2014 suggested a duty cycle of ~1 year, which makes this the most rapidly recurring system known and the leading single-degenerate Type Ia Supernova progenitor candidate; but no 2010 eruption has been found so far. Here we present evidence supporting the recovery of the 2010 eruption, based on archival images taken at and around the time. We detect the 2010 eruption in a pair of images at 2010 Nov 20.52 UT, with a magnitude of m_R = 17.84 +/- 0.19. The sequence of seven eruptions shows significant indications of a duty cycle slightly shorter than one year, which makes successive eruptions occur progressively earlier in the year. We compared three archival X-ray detections with the well observed multi-wavelength light curve of the 2014 eruption to accurately constrain the time of their optical peaks. The results imply that M31N 2008-12a might have in fact a recurrence period of ~6 months (175 +/- 11 days), making it even more exceptional. If this is the case, then we predict that soon two eruptions per year will be observable. Furthermore, we predict the next eruption will occur around late Sep 2015. We encourage additional observations.

SN 2011fu: A type IIb Supernova with a luminous double-peaked light curve

We present optical and near infrared observations of the type IIb supernova (SN) 2011fu from a few days to $\sim300$ d after explosion. The SN presents a double-peaked light curve (LC) similar to that of SN 1993J, although more luminous and with a longer cooling phase after the primary peak. The spectral evolution is also similar to SN 1993J's, with hydrogen dominating the spectra to $\sim40$ d, then helium gaining strength, and nebular emission lines appearing from $\sim60$ d post-explosion. The velocities derived from the P-Cygni absorptions are overall similar to those of other type IIb SNe. We have found a strong similarity between the oxygen and magnesium line profiles at late times, which suggests that these lines are forming at the same location within the ejecta. The hydrodynamical modelling of the pseudo-bolometric LC and the observed photospheric velocities suggest that SN 2011fu was the explosion of an extended star ($\rm R\sim450$ R$_\odot$), in which 1.3 $\times 10^{51}$ erg of kinetic energy were released and 0.15 M$_{\rm \odot}$ of $^{56}$Ni were synthesised. In addition, a better reproduction of the observed early pseudo-bolometric LC is achieved if a more massive H-rich-envelope than for other type IIb SNe is considered (0.3 M$_{\rm \odot}$). The hydrodynamical modelling of the LC and the comparison of our late-time spectra with nebular spectral models for type IIb SNe, point to a progenitor for SN 2011fu with a ZAMS mass of 13-18 M$_{\rm \odot}$.

Sensitivity analysis for diffusion processes constrained to an orthant

This paper studies diffusion processes constrained to the positive orthant under infinitesimal changes in the drift. Our first main result states that any constrained function and its (left) drift-derivative is the unique solution to an augmented Skorohod problem. Our second main result uses this characterization to establish a basic adjoint relationship for the stationary distribution of the constrained diffusion process jointly with its left-derivative process.

SCUBA-2: The 10000 pixel bolometer camera on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope

SCUBA-2 is an innovative 10000 pixel bolometer camera operating at submillimetre wavelengths on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). The camera has the capability to carry out wide-field surveys to unprecedented depths, addressing key questions relating to the origins of galaxies, stars and planets. With two imaging arrays working simultaneously in the atmospheric windows at 450 and 850 microns, the vast increase in pixel count means that SCUBA-2 maps the sky 100-150 times faster than the previous SCUBA instrument. In this paper we present an overview of the instrument, discuss the physical characteristics of the superconducting detector arrays, outline the observing modes and data acquisition, and present the early performance figures on the telescope. We also showcase the capabilities of the instrument via some early examples of the science SCUBA-2 has already undertaken. In February 2012, SCUBA-2 began a series of unique legacy surveys for the JCMT community. These surveys will take 2.5 years and the results are already providing complementary data to the shorter wavelength, shallower, larger-area surveys from Herschel. The SCUBA-2 surveys will also provide a wealth of information for further study with new facilities such as ALMA, and future telescopes such as CCAT and SPICA.

The SHER-HIAF Ring Lattice Design

Super Heavy Experimental Ring (SHER) is one of the rings of the next accelerator complex High Intensity Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF) at IMP[4]. Here, present ideas of the lattice design for the operation of the large acceptance ring are presented. The SHER ring has to be optimized for e-cooling and the lattice is designed for different modes. First of all, it is designed in the so called isochronous mode as time-of-flight mass spectrometer for short-lived secondary nuclei. Secondly, SHER can also be used to be a storage ring for collecting and cooling the secondary rare isotope beams from the transport line. In order to fulfil it's purpose, the ion optics can be set to different ion optical modes.

Experimental observation of the crystallization of a paired holon state

A new excitation is observed at 201 meV in the doped-hole ladder cuprate Sr$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$, using ultraviolet resonance Raman scattering with incident light at 3.7 eV polarized along the direction of the rungs. The excitation is found to be of charge nature, with a temperature independent excitation energy, and can be understood via an intra-ladder pair-breaking process. The intensity tracks closely the order parameter of the charge density wave in the ladder (CDW$_L$), but persists above the CDW$_L$ transition temperature ($T_{CDW_L}$), indicating a strong local pairing above $T_{CDW_L}$. The 201 meV excitation vanishes in La$_{6}$Ca$_{8}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41+δ}$, and La$_{5}$Ca$_{9}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ which are samples with no holes in the ladders. Our results suggest that the doped holes in the ladder are composite bosons consisting of paired holons that order below $T_{CDW}$.
