Blowup rate estimates of the Ball-Majumdar potential and its gradient in the Landau-de Gennes theory

In this paper we revisit a singular bulk potential in the Landau-de Gennes free energy that describes nematic liquid crystal configurations in the framework of the Q-tensor order parameter. This singular potential, called Ball-Majumdar potential, is introduced in [3], and is considered as a natural enforcement of a physical constraint on the eigenvalues of symmetric, traceless Q-tensors. Specifically, we establish blowup rates of both this singular potential and its gradient as Q approaches its physical boundary.

Numerical analysis of strongly nonlinear PDEs

We review the construction and analysis of numerical methods for strongly nonlinear PDEs, with an emphasis on convex and nonconvex fully nonlinear equations and the convergence to viscosity solutions. We begin by describing a fundamental result in this area which states that stable, consistent, and monotone schemes converge as the discretization parameter tends to zero. We review methodologies to construct finite difference, finite element, and semi-Lagrangian schemes that satisfy these criteria, and, in addition, discuss some rather novel tools that have paved the way to derive rates of convergence within this framework.

Finite element approximation of the Isaacs equation

We propose and analyze a two-scale finite element method for the Isaacs equation. The fine scale is given by the mesh size $h$ whereas the coarse scale $\varepsilon$ is dictated by an integro-differential approximation of the partial differential equation. We show that the method satisfies the discrete maximum principle provided that the mesh is weakly acute. This, in conjunction with weak operator consistency of the finite element method, allows us to establish convergence of the numerical solution to the viscosity solution as $\varepsilon, h\to0$, and $\varepsilon \gtrsim h^{1/2}|\log h|$. In addition, using a discrete Alexandrov Bakelman Pucci estimate we deduce rates of convergence, under suitable smoothness assumptions on the exact solution.

An analysis of HDG methods for convection dominated diffusion problems

In this paper, we establish an a priori error analysis of HDG methods with two types of stabilization parameter applied to convection dominated diffusion problem. We show that, using polynomials of degree no greater than k, L2 error of the scalar variable of HDG methods converges in order k + 1/2 if the meshes are not aligned with the flux. This result implies that the HDG approximation converges as fast as conventional DG methods. In the case that the meshes are aligned with the flux, we show that HDG methods with the second type of stabilization parameter achieves optimal rate of convergence. We also discuss preferred form for implementation of HDG methods. In appendix, we show that the spectral condition number of stiffness matrix of HDG methods is independent of the diffusion coefficient. Numerical experiments are presented to verify our theoretical results.
