Canonical transformations generated by the boundary volume: Unimodular and non-Abelian teleparallel gravity

Recently, a new choice of variables was identified to understand how the quantum group structure appeared in three-dimensional gravity [1]. These variables are introduced via a canonical transformation generated by a boundary term. We show that this boundary term can actually be taken to be the volume of the boundary and that the new variables can be defined in any dimension greater than three. In addition, we study the associated metric and teleparallel formalisms. The former is a variant of the Henneaux--Teitelboim model for unimodular gravity. The latter provides a non-Abelian generalization of the usual Abelian teleparallel formulation.

Barnich-Troessaert Bracket as a Dirac Bracket on the Covariant Phase Space

The Barnich--Troessaert bracket is a proposal for a modified Poisson bracket on the covariant phase space for general relativity. The new bracket allows us to compute charges, which are otherwise not integrable. Yet there is a catch. There is a clear prescription for how to evaluate the new bracket for any such charge, but little is known how to extend the bracket to the entire phase space. This is a problem, because not every gravitational observable is also a charge. In this paper, we propose such an extension. The basic idea is to remove the radiative data from the covariant phase space. This requires second-class constraints. Given a few basic assumptions, we show that the resulting Dirac bracket on the constraint surface is nothing but the BT bracket. A heuristic argument is given to show that the resulting constraint surface can only contain gravitational edge modes.

First-order formulation of teleparallel gravity and dual loop gravity

There are at least two ways to encode gravity into geometry: Einstein's general theory of relativity (GR) for the metric tensor, and teleparallel gravity, where torsion as opposed to curvature encodes the dynamics of the gravitational degrees of freedom. The main purpose of the paper is to explore the relation between loop gravity and teleparallel gravity. We argue that these two formulations of gravity are related to two different discretizations of the Einstein--Cartan action, which were studied recently in the literature. The first discretization leads to the \emph{loop gravity} kinematical phase space where the zero torsion condition is enforced {first} and the other is the \emph{dual loop gravity} kinematical phase space where curvature is imposed to vanish {first}. Our argument is based on the observation that the GR first-order Einstein--Cartan action can also be seen as a first-order action for teleparallel gravity up to a boundary term. The results of our paper suggest that the \emph{dual loop gravity} framework is a natural discretization of teleparallel gravity, whereas \emph{loop gravity} is naturally related to the standard GR metric description.

Deformed Heisenberg charges in three-dimensional gravity

In this paper, we consider the bulk plus boundary phase space for three-dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant for a particular choice of conformal boundary conditions: the conformal class of the induced metric at the boundary is kept fixed and the mean extrinsic curvature is constrained to be one. Such specific conformal boundary conditions define so-called Bryant surfaces, which can be classified completely in terms of holomorphic maps from Riemann surfaces into the spinor bundle. To study the observables and gauge symmetries of the resulting bulk plus boundary system, we introduce an extended phase space, where these holomorphic maps are now part of the gravitational bulk plus boundary phase space. The physical phase space is obtained by introducing two sets of Kac-Moody currents, which are constrained to vanish. The constraints are second-class and the corresponding Dirac bracket yields an infinite-dimensional deformation of the Heisenberg algebra for the spinor-valued surface charges. Finally, we compute the Poisson algebra among the generators of conformal diffeomorphisms and demonstrate that there is no central charge. Although the central charge vanishes and the boundary CFT is likely non-unitary, we will argue that a version of the Cardy formula still applies in this context, such that the entropy of the BTZ black hole can be derived from the degeneracy of the eigenstates of quasi-local energy.

Complex Ashtekar variables and reality conditions for Holst's action

From the Holst action in terms of complex valued Ashtekar variables additional reality conditions mimicking the linear simplicity constraints of spin foam gravity are found. In quantum theory with the results of You and Rovelli we are able to implement these constraints weakly, that is in the sense of Gupta and Bleuler. The resulting kinematical Hilbert space matches the original one of loop quantum gravity, that is for real valued Ashtekar connection. Our result perfectly fit with recent developments of Rovelli and Speziale concerning Lorentz covariance within spin-form gravity.

Horizon energy as the boost boundary term in general relativity and loop gravity

We show that the near-horizon energy introduced by Frodden, Ghosh and Perez arises from the action for general relativity as a horizon boundary term. Spin foam variables are used in the analysis. The result provides a derivation of the horizon boost Hamiltonian introduced by one of us to define the dynamics of the horizon degrees of freedom, and shows that loop gravity provides a realization of the horizon Schrodinger equation proposed by Carlip and Teitelboim.

The spin connection of twisted geometry

Twisted geometry is a piecewise-flat geometry less rigid than Regge geometry. In Loop Gravity, it provides the classical limit for each step of the truncation utilized in the definition of the quantum theory. We define the torsionless spin-connection of a twisted geometry. The difficulty given by the discontinuity of the triad is addressed by interpolating between triads. The curvature of the resulting spin connection reduces to the Regge curvature in the case of a Regge geometry.

Complex Ashtekar variables, the Kodama state and spinfoam gravity

Starting from a Hamiltonian description of four dimensional general relativity in presence of a cosmological constant we perform the program of canonical quantisation. This is done using complex Ashtekar variables while keeping the Barbero--Immirzi parameter real. Introducing the SL(2,C) Kodama state formally solving all first class constraints we propose a spinfoam vertex amplitude. We construct SL(2,C) boundary spinnetwork functions coloured by finite dimensional representations of the group, and derive the skein relations needed to calculate the amplitude. The space of boundary states is shown to carry a representation of the holonomy flux algebra and can naturally be equipped with a non-degenerate inner product. It fails to be positive definite, but cylindrical consistency is perfectly satisfied.
