The International Linear Collider: Report to Snowmass 2021

The International Linear Collider (ILC) is on the table now as a new global energy-frontier accelerator laboratory taking data in the 2030s. The ILC addresses key questions for our current understanding of particle physics. It is based on a proven accelerator technology. Its experiments will challenge the Standard Model of particle physics and will provide a new window to look beyond it. This document brings the story of the ILC up to date, emphasizing its strong physics motivation, its readiness for construction, and the opportunity it presents to the US and the global particle physics community.

Theoretical uncertainties in the MSSM Higgs boson mass calculation

The remaining theoretical uncertainties from unknown higher-order corrections in the prediction for the light Higgs-boson mass of the MSSM are estimated. The uncertainties associated with three different approaches that are implemented in the publicly available code FeynHiggs are compared: the fixed-order diagrammatic approach, suitable for low SUSY scales, the effective field theory (EFT) approach, suitable for high SUSY scales, and the hybrid approach which combines the fixed-order and the EFT approaches. It is demonstrated for a simple single-scale scenario that the result based on the hybrid approach yields a precise prediction for low, intermediate and high SUSY scales with a theoretical uncertainty of up to $\sim 1.5$ GeV for large stop mixing and $\sim 0.5$ GeV for small stop mixing. The uncertainty estimate of the hybrid calculation approaches the uncertainty estimate of the fixed-order result for low SUSY scales and the uncertainty estimate of the EFT approach for high SUSY scales, while for intermediate scales it is reduced compared to both of the individual results. The estimate of the theoretical uncertainty is also investigated in scenarios with more than one mass scale. A significantly enhanced uncertainty is found in scenarios where the gluino is substantially heavier than the scalar top quarks. The uncertainty estimate presented in this paper will be part of the public code FeynHiggs.

Electroweak corrections to squark-antisquark production at the LHC

We present the calculation of the electroweak corrections for squark-antisquark pair production at the LHC within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Taking into account all possible chirality and light-flavor configurations, we evaluate the NLO EW corrections, which are of O(a_s^2 a), as well as the subleading tree-level contributions of O(a_s a) and O(a^2). Numerical results are presented for several scans in the SUSY parameter space and relevant differential distributions are investigated. The impact of the electroweak corrections is nonnegligible and strongly depends on the chirality configuration of the produced squarks. Our analysis includes a discussion of photon-gluon initiated processes with a focus on the impact of the corresponding large PDF uncertainties.

Top Yukawa-Coupling Enhanced Two-Loop Corrections to the Masses of the Higgs Bosons in the MSSM with CP Violation

Recent results for the leading $\mathcal{O}{\left(α_t^2\right)}$ two-loop corrections to the Higgs-boson masses of the MSSM with complex parameters are presented. The strategy of the Feynman-diagrammatic, analytical calculation is illustrated. Numerical analyses show agreement with a previous result in the limit of real parameters. Furthermore, the newly available dependence on complex MSSM parameters is investigated. Mass shifts by $\approx 1$GeV for different phases underline the importance of this contribution for a precise prediction of the Higgs-boson mass spectrum in the MSSM.

Two-loop top-Yukawa-coupling corrections to the charged Higgs-boson mass in the MSSM

The top-Yukawa-coupling enhanced two-loop corrections to the charged Higgs-boson mass in the real MSSM are presented. The contributing two-loop self-energies are calculated in the Feynman- diagrammatic approach in the gaugeless limit with vanishing external momentum and bottom mass, within a renormalization scheme comprising on-shell and $\overline{\text{DR}}$ conditions. Numerical results illustrate the effect of the $\mathcal{O}{(α_t^2)}$ contributions and the importance of the two-loop corrections to the mass of the charged Higgs bosons.

Higgs boson masses and mixings in the complex MSSM with two-loop top-Yukawa-coupling corrections

Results for the leading two-loop corrections of $\mathcal{O}{\left(α_t^2\right)}$ from the Yukawa sector to the Higgs-boson mass spectrum of the MSSM with complex parameters are presented, with details of the analytical calculation performed in the Feynman-diagrammatic approach using a mixed $\left.\text{on-shell}\middle/\,\overline{\text{DR}}\right.$ scheme that can be directly matched onto the higher-order terms in the code ${\tt FeynHiggs}$. Numerical results are shown for the masses and mixing effects in the neutral Higgs-boson sector and their variation with the phases of the complex parameters. Furthermore, the analytical expressions of the two-loop self-energies and the required renormalization constants are recorded. The new results can consistently be implemented in ${\tt FeynHiggs}$.

Higher-Order Contributions in Higgs Sectors of Supersymmetric Models

In 2012, the discovery of a particle compatible with a Higgs boson of a mass of roughly 125 GeV was announced. This great success is now being followed by the identification of the nature of this particle and the particle's properties are being measured. One of these properties is the Higgs boson mass which is already known very precisely with an experimental uncertainty of below 1 GeV. In some extensions of the Standard Model, like in supersymmetric extensions, the Higgs boson mass can be predicted and hence, the measured mass constrains the parameters of the model. For a full exploitation of this constraint, a precise theoretical prediction is needed. The presented combination of the results obtained by the Feynman diagrammatic approach and the renormalization group equation approach improves the known Higgs mass prediction for larger mass scales of the superpartner particles.

Top-squark pair production at the LHC: a complete analysis at next-to-leading order

We present a complete next-to-leading order study of top-squark pair production at the LHC, including QCD and EW corrections. The calculation is performed within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and numerical results are presented for parameter regions compatible with the observed Higgs boson. We employ the most recent parton distribution functions including QED corrections and we find NLO EW corrections to the inclusive stop-pair production cross section up to $25 - 30\%$ compared to the leading-order prediction. Besides corrections to inclusive cross sections also important kinematic distributions are investigated.

Two-loop top-Yukawa-coupling corrections to the Higgs boson masses in the complex MSSM

Results for the leading two-loop corrections of $\mathcal{O}{\left(α_t^2\right)}$ from the Yukawa sector to the Higgs-boson masses of the MSSM with complex parameters are presented. The corresponding self-energies and their renormalization have been obtained in a Feynman-diagrammatic approach. A numerical analysis of the new contributions is performed for the mass of the lightest Higgs boson, supplemented by the full one-loop result and the $\mathcal{O}{\left(α_t α_s\right)}$ terms including complex phases. In the limit of the real MSSM a previous result is confirmed.

Electroweak corrections to $gg\to H^{-}t\bar{b}$ at the LHC

The dominant contribution to $H^- t\bar{b}$ production at the LHC is the gluon-gluon fusion parton subprocess. We perform for the case of the complex MSSM a complete calculation of the NLO electroweak contributions to this channel. The other small contributions with quarks or photon in the initial state are calculated at tree level. The results are improved by using the effective bottom-Higgs couplings to resum the leading radiative corrections. We find that, beyond these leading corrections, the NLO electroweak contributions can be still be significant. The effect of the complex phases of the soft-breaking parameters is found to be sizable.

NLO corrections to squark-squark production and decay at the LHC

We present the analysis of the signature 2j + ETmiss (+X) via squark-squark production and direct decay into the lightest neutralino, pp -> squark squark -> j j chi_1^0 chi_1^0 (+X), in next-to-leading order QCD within the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. In our approximation the produced squarks are treated on shell. Thus, the calculation of production and decay factorizes. In this way, we provide a consistent, fully differential calculation of NLO QCD factorizable corrections to the given processes. Clustering final states into partonic jets, we investigate the experimental inclusive signature 2j + ETmiss for several benchmark scenarios. We compare resulting differential distributions with leading-order approximations rescaled by a flat K-factor and examine a possible impact for cut-and-count searches for supersymmetry at the LHC.

On cascade decays of squarks at the LHC in NLO QCD

In this paper we present an analysis at NLO of the contribution from squark-squark production to the experimental signature 2j + 2l + missing E_T (+X) with opposite-sign same flavor leptons, taking into account decays and experimental cuts. We consider the case in which one squark decays directly into the lightest neutralino chi^0_1 and the other one into the second lightest neutralino and subsequently into l^+l^-chi^0_1 via an intermediate slepton. On one hand we study effects of the NLO corrections on invariant mass distributions which can be used for future parameter determination. On the other hand we analyze the impact on predictions for cut-and-count searches using this experimental signature.

Radiative Corrections to $H^0\to WW/ZZ$ in the MSSM

The electroweak $\mathcal O(α)$ radiative corrections to the decay of the heavy CP-even MSSM Higgs boson to weak gauge bosons are presented. Due to the suppression of the tree-level $H^0WW/H^0ZZ$ coupling, the electroweak contributions to the partial decay width are significant. Although the effective Born decay width can be rather small for certain $M_{A^0}$ values (especially for large $\tanβ$), the corrected partial widths at different values of $M_{A^0}$ are of comparable size.

The electroweak contribution to the top quark forward-backward asymmetry at the Tevatron

The electroweak contributions to the forward-backward asymmetry in the production of top-quark pairs at the Tevatron are evaluated at O(alpha^2) and O(alpha*alphas^2). We perform a detailed analysis of all partonic channels that produce an asymmetry and combine them with the QCD contributions. They provide a non-negligible fraction of the QCD-induced asymmetry with the same overall sign, thus enlarging the Standard Model prediction and diminishing the observed deviation. For the observed mass-dependent forward-backward asymmetry a 3-sigma deviation still remains at an invariant-mass cut of M_(t-tbar) > 450 GeV.

W-+ H+- production and CP asymmetry at the LHC

The dominant contributions to W-+ H+- production at the LHC are the tree-level b anti-b annihilation and the gg fusion. We perform for the case of the complex MSSM a complete calculation of the NLO EW corrections to the b anti-b annihilation channel and a consistent combination with other contributions including the standard and SUSY QCD corrections and the gg fusion, with resummation of the leading radiative corrections to the bottom-Higgs couplings and the neutral Higgs-boson propagators. We observe a large CP-violating asymmetry, arising mainly from the gg channel.

Hadronic production of squark-squark pairs: The electroweak contributions

We compute the electroweak (EW) contributions to squark--squark pair production processes at the LHC within the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). Both tree-level EW contributions, of O(alpha_s alpha + alpha^2), and next-to-leading order (NLO) EW corrections, of O(alpha_s^2 alpha), are calculated. Depending on the flavor and chirality of the produced quarks, many interferences between EW-mediated and QCD-mediated diagrams give non-zero contributions at tree-level and NLO. We discuss the computational techniques and present an extensive numerical analysis for inclusive squark--squark production as well as for subsets and single processes. While the tree-level EW contributions to the integrated cross sections can reach the 20% level, the NLO EW corrections typically lower the LO prediction by a few percent.

One-loop calculations of the decay of the next-to-lightest neutralino in the MSSM

We calculate one-loop corrections to the decays of the next-to-lightest neutralino $\tildeχ_2^0$ into the lightest neutralino $\tildeχ_1^0$ and two leptons; this includes diagrams where a real photon is emitted. In cases where two-body decays $\tildeχ_2^0 \to \tilde{l}^\pm_1 l^\mp \to \tildeχ_1^0 l^- l^+$ are kinematically allowed, we calculate these decays both with and without the single-pole approximation, and find consistent results. For example, for the minimal supergravity parameter set SPS1a, the integrated partial widths (the branching ratios) for $\tildeχ_2^0\to \tildeχ_1^0 l^- l^+ (l = e, μ)$ are enhanced by about 15.5 (13.6) percent by the one-loop corrections. We also study a scenario where $\tilde χ_2^0$ cannot undergo two-body decays, and find corrections to these branching ratios of about 13.6 percent. Moreover, we study the dilepton invariant mass ($M_{l^+ l^-}$) distribution, whose endpoint is often used in analyses that aim to reconstruct (differences of) supersymmetric particle masses at the LHC. The shape of this distribution is altered significantly by the emission of hard photons. For example, for the SPS1a parameter set the peak of the $M_{l^+ l^-}$ distribution is shifted by several GeV when these contributions are included.

Radiative corrections to scalar-fermion pair production in high energy e+e- collisions

We study the one-loop radiative corrections to pair production of the supersymmetric scalar partners of the standard fermions in e+e- annihilation. Both electroweak and SUSY-QCD corrections are considered. Applications are for production of scalar fermions of the third generation, $e^+e^-\to \wt{f}_i \wt{f}_j^*$ (i,j=1,2), $f=t, b,τ$, as well as for production of scalar quarks of the first and second generation. Effects on integrated cross sections are discussed and also the one-loop induced forward-backward asymmetries are studied. It is found that at low energy, \sqrt{s}\approx 500 \to 1000 GeV, the corrections are dominated by the QCD contributions, At high energy, $\sqrt{s}\geq 2$ TeV, the electroweak box diagrams give a substantial contribution and even dominate in some regions of parameters space. The purely loop-induced forward-backward asymmetry can reach values of several per cent.

Renormalization of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

The renormalization of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model of electroweak interactions is presented to all orders of perturbation theory using the algebraic method. Special attention is directed to the issues of soft supersymmetry breaking, gauge fixing, and infrared finiteness. We discuss the implications of $\hbar$-dependent field parametrizations on the counterterm structure and provide a complete set of on-shell normalization conditions.

Full electroweak one-loop radiative corrections to squark decays in the MSSM

We present results on the full one-loop electroweak radiative corrections to the squark decay partial widths into charginos and neutralinos. We show the renormalization framework, and present numerical results for the third squark family. The corrections can reach values of ~ 10%, which are comparable to the radiative corrections from the strong sector of the model. Therefore they should be taken into account for the precise extraction of the SUSY parameters at future colliders.

Yukawa coupling quantum corrections to the self couplings of the lightest MSSM Higgs boson

A detailed analysis of the top-quark/squark quantum corrections to the lightest CP-even Higgs boson (h^0) self-couplings is presented in the MSSM. By considering the leading one-loop Yukawa-coupling contributions of O(m_t^4), we discuss the decoupling behaviour of these corrections when the top-squarks are heavy compared to the electroweak scale. As shown analytically and numerically, the large corrections can almost completely be absorbed into the h^0-boson mass. Our conclusion is that the h^0 self-couplings remain similar to the coupling of the SM Higgs boson for a heavy top-squark sector.

Top quark decay into charged Higgs boson in a general Two-Higgs-Doublet model: implications for the TEVATRON data

We analyze the unconventional top quark decay mode t -> H^+ b at the quantum level within the context of general Two-Higgs-Doublet models by including the full electroweak effects from the Yukawa couplings. The results are presented in the on-shell renormalization scheme with a physically well motivated definition of tan(beta). While the QCD corrections have been taken into account in the current experimental analyses of that decay, the electroweak effects have always been neglected. However, we find that they can be rather large and could dramatically alter the interpretation of the present data from the Tevatron collider. For instance, in large portions of the parameter space the electroweak effects prevent the Tevatron data from placing any bound at all to the charged Higgs mass for essentially any value of tan(beta).

preprint1998arXiv

Yukawa-coupling corrections to scalar quark decays

Heavy squark decays into top and charginos or neutralinos could be an unexpected source of top quarks at hadron colliders. A detailed treatment of these processes is necessary for a reliable calculation of both the top quark production cross-section and the standard top quark branching ratio in the MSSM. Along this line we compute the electroweak corrections to the sbottom decays sbottom_a --> chargino_i top within the Yukawa coupling approximation. The calculation of these higher order contributions requires renormalization of both the bottom squark mixing angle and of tan(beta). This type of corrections gives the leading order electroweak effects at low and high tan(beta).

Electroweak Supersymmetric Quantum Corrections to the Top Quark Width

Within the framework of the MSSM, we compute the electroweak one-loop supersymmetric quantum corrections to the width $Γ(t\rightarrow W^{+}\, b)$ of the canonical main decay of the top quark. The results are presented in two on-shell renormalization schemes parametrized either by $α$ or $G_F$. While in the standard model, and in the Higgs sector of the MSSM, the electroweak radiative corrections in the $G_F$-scheme are rather insensitive to the top quark mass and are of order of $1\%$ at most, the rest (``genuine'' part) of the supersymmetric quantum effects in the MSSM amount to a non-negligible correction that could be about one order of magnitude larger, depending on the top quark mass and of the region of the supersymmetric parameter space. These new electroweak effects, therefore, could be of the same order (and go in the same direction) as the conventional leading QCD corrections.
