Daily monitoring of scattered light noise due to microseismic variability at the Virgo interferometer

Data acquired by the Virgo interferometer during the second part of the O3 scientific run, referred to as O3b, were analysed with the aim of characterising the onset and time evolution of scattered light noise in connection with the variability of microseismic noise in the environment surrounding the detector. The adaptive algorithm used, called pytvfemd, is suitable for the analysis of time series which are both nonlinear and nonstationary. It allowed to obtain the first oscillatory mode of the differential arm motion degree of freedom of the detector during days affected by scattered light noise. The mode's envelope i.e., its instantaneous amplitude, is then correlated with the motion of the West end bench, a known source of scattered light during O3. The relative velocity between the West end test mass and the West end optical bench is used as a predictor of scattered light noise. Higher values of correlation are obtained in periods of higher seismic noise in the microseismic frequency band. This is also confirmed by the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of scattered light glitches from GravitySpy for the January-March 2020 period. Obtained results suggest that the adopted methodology is suited for scattered light noise characterisation and monitoring in gravitational wave interferometers.

Scattered light noise characterisation at the Virgo interferometer with tvf-EMD adaptive algorithm

A methodology of adaptive time series analysis, based on Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD), and on its time varying version tvf-EMD has been applied to strain data from the gravitational wave interferometer (IFO) Virgo in order to characterise scattered light noise affecting the sensitivity of the IFO in the detection frequency band. Data taken both during hardware injections, when a part of the IFO is put in oscillation for detector characterisation purposes, and during periods of science mode, when the IFO is fully locked and data are used for the detection of gravitational waves, were analysed. The adaptive nature of the EMD and tvf-EMD algorithms allows them to deal with nonlinear non-stationary data and hence they are particularly suited to characterise scattered light noise which is an intrinsically nonlinear and non-stationary noise. Obtained results show that tvf-EMD algorithm allows to obtain more precise results compared to the EMD algorithm, yielding higher cross-correlation values with the auxiliary channels that are the culprits of scattered light noise.

Gödel spacetime, planar geodesics and the Möbius map

Timelike geodesics on a hyperplane orthogonal to the symmetry axis of the Gödel spacetime appear to be elliptic-like if standard coordinates naturally adapted to the cylindrical symmetry are used. The orbit can then be suitably described through an eccentricity-semi-latus rectum parametrization, familiar from the Newtonian dynamics of a two-body system. However, changing coordinates such planar geodesics all become explicitly circular, as exhibited by Kundt's form of the Gödel metric. We derive here a one-to-one correspondence between the constants of the motion along these geodesics as well as between the parameter spaces of elliptic-like versus circular geodesics. We also show how to connect the two equivalent descriptions of particle motion by introducing a pair of complex coordinates in the 2-planes orthogonal to the symmetry axis, which brings the metric into a form which is invariant under Möbius transformations preserving the symmetries of the orbit, i.e., taking circles to circles.

Scattering of uncharged particles in the field of two extremely charged black holes

We investigate the motion of uncharged particles scattered by a binary system consisting of extremely charged black holes in equilibrium as described by the Majumdar-Papapetrou solution. We focus on unbound orbits confined to the plane containing both black holes. We consider the two complementary situations of particles approaching the system along a direction parallel to the axis where the black holes are displaced and orthogonal to it. We numerically compute the scattering angle as a function of the particle's conserved energy parameter, which provides a gauge-invariant information of the scattering process. We also study the precession of a test gyroscope along such orbits and evaluate the accumulated precession angle after a full scattering, which is another gauge-invariant quantity.
