All Global One- and Two-Dimensional Higher-Point Conformal Blocks

We introduce a full set of rules to directly express all $M$-point conformal blocks in one- and two-dimensional conformal field theories, irrespective of the topology. The $M$-point conformal blocks are power series expansion in some carefully-chosen conformal cross-ratios. We then prove the rules for any topology constructively with the help of the known position space operator product expansion. To this end, we first compute the action of the position space operator product expansion on the most general function of position space coordinates relevant to conformal field theory. These results provide the complete knowledge of all $M$-point conformal blocks with arbitrary external and internal quasi-primary operators (including arbitrary spins in two dimensions) in any topology.

Higher-Point Conformal Blocks in the Comb Channel

We compute $M$-point conformal blocks with scalar external and exchange operators in the so-called comb configuration for any $M$ in any dimension $d$. Our computation involves repeated use of the operator product expansion to increase the number of external fields. We check our results in several limits and compare with the expressions available in the literature when $M=5$ for any $d$, and also when $M$ is arbitrary while $d=1$.

Conformal Two-Point Correlation Functions from the Operator Product Expansion

We compute the most general embedding space two-point function in arbitrary Lorentz representations in the context of the recently introduced formalism in arXiv:1905.00036 and arXiv:1905.00434. This work provides a first explicit application of this approach and furnishes a number of checks of the formalism. We project the general embedding space two-point function to position space and find a form consistent with conformal covariance. Several concrete examples are worked out in detail. We also derive constraints on the OPE coefficient matrices appearing in the two-point function, which allow us to impose unitarity conditions on the two-point function coefficients for operators in any Lorentz representations.

New Methods for Conformal Correlation Functions

The most general operator product expansion in conformal field theory is obtained using the embedding space formalism and a new uplift for general quasi-primary operators. The uplift introduced here, based on quasi-primary operators with spinor indices only and standard projection operators, allows a unified treatment of all quasi-primary operators irrespective of their Lorentz group irreducible representations. This unified treatment works at the level of the operator product expansion and hence applies to all correlation functions. A very useful differential operator appearing in the operator product expansion is established and its action on appropriate products of embedding space coordinates is explicitly computed. This computation leads to tensorial generalizations of the usual Exton function for all correlation functions. Several important identities and contiguous relations are also demonstrated for these new tensorial functions. From the operator product expansion all correlation functions for all quasi-primary operators, irrespective of their Lorentz group irreducible representations, can be computed recursively in a systematic way. The resulting answer can be expressed in terms of tensor structures that carry all the Lorentz group information and linear combinations of the new tensorial functions. Finally, a summary of the well-defined rules allowing the computation of all correlation functions constructively is presented.

Conformal Bootstrap in Embedding Space

It is shown how to obtain conformal blocks from embedding space with the help of the operator product expansion. The minimal conformal block originates from scalar exchange in a four-point correlation functions of four scalars. All remaining conformal blocks are simple derivatives of the minimal conformal block. With the help of the orthogonality properties of the conformal blocks, the analytic conformal bootstrap can be implemented directly in embedding space, leading to a Jacobi-like definition of conformal field theories.

Higgs mass naturalness and scale invariance in the UV

It has been suggested that electroweak symmetry breaking in the Standard Model may be natural if the Standard Model merges into a conformal field theory (CFT) at short distances. In such a scenario the Higgs mass would be protected from quantum corrections by the scale invariance of the CFT. In order for the Standard Model to merge into a CFT at least one new ultraviolet (UV) scale is required at which the couplings turn over from their usual Standard Model running to the fixed point behavior. We argue that the Higgs mass is sensitive to such a turn-over scale even if there are no associated massive particles and the scale arises purely from dimensional transmutation. We demonstrate this sensitivity to the turnover scale explicitly in toy models. Thus if scale invariance is responsible for Higgs mass naturalness, then the transition to CFT dynamics must occur near the TeV scale with observable consequences at colliders. In addition, the UV fixed point theory in such a scenario must be interacting because logarithmic running near a free fixed point constitutes hard breaking of scale invariance and spoils the Higgs mass protection.

Higgs Up-Down CP Asymmetry at the LHC

We propose a new observable designed to probe CP-violating coupling of the Higgs boson to W bosons using associated Higgs production. We define an asymmetry that measures the number of leptons from W decays relative to the plane defined by the beam line and the Higgs boson momentum. The orientation of that plane is determined by the direction of fermions in the initial state, so that in a proton-proton collider it requires rapidity cuts that preferentially select quarks over antiquarks.

Electroweak Corrections from Triplet Scalars

We compute the electroweak S and T parameters induced by SU(2)_L triplet scalars up to one-loop order. We consider the most general renormalizable potential for a triplet and the Standard Model Higgs doublet. Our calculation is performed by integrating out the triplet at the one-loop level and also includes the one-loop renormalization group running. Effective field theory framework allows us to work in the phase with unbroken SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y symmetry. Both S and T parameters exhibit decoupling when all dimensionful parameters are large while keeping dimensionless ratios fixed. We use bounds on S and T to constrain the triplet mass and couplings.

Superembedding methods for 4d N=1 SCFTs

We extend SO(4,2) covariant lightcone embedding methods of four-dimensional CFTs to N=1 superconformal field theory (SCFT). Manifest superconformal SU(2,2|1) invariance is achieved by realizing 4D superconformal space as a surface embedded in the projective superspace spanned by certain complex chiral supermatrices. Because SU(2,2|1) acts linearly on the ambient space, the constraints on correlators implied by superconformal Ward identities are automatically solved in this formalism. Applications include new, compact expressions for correlation functions containing one anti-chiral superfield and arbitrary chiral superfield insertions, and manifestly invariant expressions for the superconformal cross-ratios that parametrize the four-point function of two chiral and two anti-chiral fields. Superconformal expressions for the leading singularities in the OPE of chiral and anti-chiral operators are also given. Because of covariance, our expressions are valid in any superconformally flat background, e.g., AdS_4 or R times S^3.

Superembedding Methods for Current Superfields

We extend the superembedding formalism for 4D N=1 superconformal field theory (SCFT) to the case of fields in arbitrary representations of the superconformal group SU(2,2|1). As applications we obtain manifestly superconformally covariant expressions for two- and three-point functions involving conserved currents, e.g. the supercurrent multiplet or global symmetry current superfields. The embedding space results are presented in a compact form by employing an index-free formalism. Our expressions are consistent with the literature, but the manifestly covariant forms of correlators presented here are new.

TASI Lectures on Effective Field Theory and Precision Electroweak Measurements

The first part of these lectures provides a brief introduction to the concepts and techniques of effective field theory. The second part reviews precision electroweak constraints using effective theory methods. Several simple extensions of the Standard Model are considered as illustrations. The appendix contains some new results on the one-loop contributions of electroweak triplet scalars to the T parameter and contains a discussion of decoupling in that case.

A Simple Model of two Little Higgses

We construct a little Higgs model using a simple global symmetry group SU(9) spontaneously broken to SU(8). The electroweak interactions are extended to SU(3)xU(1) and embedded in SU(9). At the electroweak scale, our model is a two Higgs-doublet model. At the TeV scale, there are additional states, which are responsible for the cancellation of one loop quadratic divergences. We compute the effects of heavy states on the precision electroweak observables and find that the lower bounds on the masses of heavy gauge bosons and fermions are between 1 and 2 TeV.

Minimal Gaugino Mediation

We propose Minimal Gaugino Mediation as the simplest known solution to the supersymmetric flavor and CP problems. The framework predicts a very minimal structure for the soft parameters at ultra-high energies: gaugino masses are unified and non-vanishing whereas all other soft supersymmetry breaking parameters vanish. We show that this boundary condition naturally arises from a small extra dimension and present a complete model which includes a new extra-dimensional solution to the mu problem. We briefly discuss the predicted superpartner spectrum as a function of the two parameters of the model. The commonly ignored renormalization group evolution above the GUT scale is crucial to the viability of Minimal Gaugino Mediation but does not introduce new model dependence.

Bonus Symmetry and the Operator Product Expansion of N=4 Super-Yang-Mills

The superconformal group of N=4 super-Yang-Mills has two types of operator representations: short and long. We conjecture that operator product expansions for which at least two of the three operators are short exactly respect a bonus U(1)_Y R-symmetry, which acts as an automorphism of the superconformal group. This conjecture is for arbitrary gauge group G and gauge coupling g_{YM}. A consequence is that n\leq 4-point functions involving only short operators exactly respect the U(1)_Y symmetry, as has been previously conjectured based on AdS duality. This, in turn, would imply that all n\leq 3 -point functions involving only short operators are not renormalized, as has also been previously conjectured and subjected to perturbative checks. It is argued that instantons are compatible with our conjecture. Some perturbative checks of the conjecture are presented and SL(2,Z) modular transformation properties are discussed.

Correlators of Short Multi-Trace Operators in N=4 Supersymmetric Yang-Mills

Multi-trace scalar operators in the (0,k,0) representations of SU(4)_R share many properties with their single-trace analogs. These multi-trace operators are primary fields of short representations of the N=4 superconformal group. Thus, they have protected dimensions. We show that two- and three-point correlator functions of such operators do not receive radiative corrections at order g^2 in perturbation theory for an arbitrary gauge group.

Dynamical Supersymmetry Breaking

We review mechanisms of dynamical supersymmetry breaking. Several observations that narrow the search for possible models of dynamical supersymmetry breaking are summarized. These observations include the necessary and sufficient conditions for supersymmetry breaking. The two conditions are based on non-rigorous arguments, and we show examples where they are too restrictive. Dynamical effects present in models with product gauge groups are given special attention.

Constraining the Strongly-Coupled Standard Model Including a W' Isotriplet

We consider the Strongly-Coupled Standard Model (Abbott-Farhi model) including an isotriplet of W' vector bosons. First we calculate the corrections to the low-energy theory, which can be effectively summarized in terms of the parameters S, T and U. Then we use high- precision electroweak measurements to constrain the mass and couplings of the W'. The W' couplings are restricted to be unnaturally small, and we conclude that this model is no longer compelling as a theory of the electroweak interactions.
