Shenanigans at the black hole horizon: pair creation or Boulware accretion?

The current scenario of black hole evaporation holds that the Hawking energy flux $F$ is powered by pair creation at the horizon. However, pair creation produces entanglements, some of which must necessarily be broken before the black hole evaporates completely. That leads to loss of information and violation of unitarity. In this paper, an alternative scenario is suggested that reproduces the essential features of Hawking evaporation, but does not invoke pair creation with its attendant problems. In this "accreting Boulware" scenario, a positive flux $F$ is still an outflux at infinity, but near the horizon it becomes an influx of negative energy. This negative energy flux (marginally) satisfies the Flanagan energy inequality.

A Massless Firewall

Several anomalies of black hole thermodynamics are resolved if one accepts hints from semi classical theory that in regions of strong gravity the energy density of the vacuum can become substantially negative. This leads to a picture of the horizon as a hot massless shell. As viewed in the local (Boulware) ground state, the apparent horizon is the repository of a large store of energy, and this energy is thermal. But, as a source of gravity, its mass is near zero. A simple (1+1)-dimensional model provides a concrete realization of this picture.

Black holes, brick walls and the Boulware state

The brick-wall model seeks to explain the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy as a wall-contribution to the thermal energy of ambient quantum fields raised to the Hawking temperature. Reservations have been expressed concerning the self-consistency of this model. For example, it predicts large thermal energy densities near the wall, producing a substantial mass-correction and, presumably, a large gravitational back-reaction. We re-examine this model and conclude that these reservations are unfounded once the ground state---the Boulware state---is correctly identified. We argue that the brick-wall model and the Gibbons-Hawking instanton (which ascribes a topological origin to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy) are mutually exclusive, alternative descriptions (complementary in the sense of Bohr) of the same physics.
