Master equations with indefinite nonlinearities

In this paper, we consider the following indefinite fully fractional heat equation involving the master operator \begin{equation} (\partial_t -Δ)^{s} u(x,t) = x_1u^p(x,t)\ \ \mbox{in}\ \R^n\times\R , \end{equation} where $s\in(0,1)$, and $-\infty < p < \infty$. Under mild conditions, we prove that there is no positive bounded solutions. To this end, we first show that the solutions are strictly increasing along $x_1$ direction by employing the direct method of moving planes. Then by constructing an unbounded sub-solution, we derive the nonexistence of bounded solutions. To circumvent the difficulties caused by the fully fractional master operator, we introduced some new ideas and novel approaches that, as we believe, will become useful tool in studying a variety of other fractional elliptic and parabolic problems.

Regularity of solutions for fully fractional parabolic equations

In this paper, we study the fully fractional heat equation involving the master operator: $$ (\partial_t -Δ)^{s} u(x,t) = f(x,t)\ \ \mbox{in}\ \mathbb{R}^n\times\mathbb{R} , $$ where $s\in(0,1)$ and $f(x,t) \geq 0$. First we derive Hölder and Schauder estimates for nonnegative solutions of this equation. Due to the {\em nonlocality} of the master operator, existing results (cf. \cite{ST}) rely on global bounds of the solutions $u$ to control their higher local norms. However, such results are inadequate for blow-up and rescaling analysis aimed at obtaining a priori estimates for solutions to {\em nonlocal } equations on unbounded domains, as the global norms of the rescaled functions may diverge. This limitation raises to a natural and challenging question: {\em Can local bounds of solutions replace global bounds to control their higher local norms?} Here, we provide an affirmative answer to this question for nonnegative solutions. To achieve this, we introduced several new ideas and novel techniques. One of the key innovations is to use a {\em directional perturbation average} to derive an important estimate for the fully fractional heat kernel, as stated in Lemma \ref{key0}. We believe this estimate, along with other new techniques introduced here, will serve as powerful tools in regularity estimates for a wide range of nonlocal equations. Building on this breakthrough, we employ the blow-up and rescaling arguments to establish a priori estimates for solutions to a broader class of nonlocal equations in unbounded domains, such as $$(\partial_t -Δ)^{s} u(x,t) = b(x,t) |\nabla_x u (x,t)|^q + f(x, u(x,t))\ \ \mbox{in}\ \ \mathbb{R}^n\times\mathbb{R}.$$ Under appropriate conditions, we prove that all nonnegative solutions, along with their spatial gradients, are uniformly bounded.

Asymptotic method of moving planes for fractional parabolic equations

In this paper, we develop a systematical approach in applying an asymptotic method of moving planes to investigate qualitative properties of positive solutions for fractional parabolic equations. We first obtain a series of needed key ingredients such as narrow region principles, and various asymptotic maximum and strong maximum principles for antisymmetric functions in both bounded and unbounded domains. Then we illustrate how this new method can be employed to obtain asymptotic radial symmetry and monotonicity of positive solutions in a unit ball and on the whole space. Namely, we show that no matter what the initial data are, the solutions will eventually approach to radially symmetric functions. We firmly believe that the ideas and methods introduced here can be conveniently applied to study a variety of nonlocal parabolic problems with more general operators and more general nonlinearities.

A direct method of moving planes for the fractional Laplacian

In this paper, we develop a direct method of moving planes for the fractional Laplacian. Instead of conventional extension method introduced by Caffarelli and Silvestre, we work directly on the non-local operator. Using the integral defining the fractional Laplacian, by an elementary approach, we first obtain the key ingredients needed in the method of moving planes either in a bounded domain or in the whole space, such as strong maximum principles for anti-symmetric functions, narrow region principles, and decay at infinity. Then, using a simple example, a semi-linear equation involving the fractional Laplacian, we illustrate how this new method of moving planes can be employed to obtain symmetry and non-existence of positive solutions. We firmly believe that the ideas and methods introduced here can be conveniently applied to study a variety of nonlocal problems with more general operators and more general nonlinearities.

Direct Method of Moving Spheres on Fractional Order Equations

In this paper, we introduce a direct method of moving spheres for the nonlocal fractional Laplacian $(-\triangle)^{α/2}$ for $0<α<2$, in which a key ingredient is the narrow region maximum principle. As immediate applications, we classify the non-negative solutions for a semilinear equation involving the fractional Laplacian in $\mathbb{R}^n$; we prove a non-existence result for prescribing $Q_α$ curvature equation on $\mathbb{S}^n$; then by combining the direct method of moving planes and moving spheres, we establish a Liouville type theorem on the half Euclidean space. We expect to see more applications of this method to many other equations involving non-local operators.

Maximum principles for a fully nonlinear fractional order equation and symmetry of solutions

In this paper, we consider equations involving fully nonlinear nonlocal operators $$F_α(u(x)) \equiv C_{n,α} PV \int_{\mathbb{R}^n} \frac{G(u(x)-u(z))}{|x-z|^{n+α}} dz= f(x,u).$$ We prove a maximum principle and obtain key ingredients for carrying on the method of moving planes, such as narrow region principle and decay at infinity. Then we establish radial symmetry and monotonicity for positive solutions to Dirichlet problems associated to such fully nonlinear fractional order equations in a unit ball and in the whole space, as well as non-existence of solutions on a half space. We believe that the methods develop here can be applied to a variety of problems involving fully nonlinear nonlocal operators. We also investigate the limit of this operator as $α\rightarrow 2$ and show that $$F_α(u(x)) \rightarrow a(-Δu(x)) + b |\bigtriangledown u(x)|^2 .$$

A direct blowing-up and rescaling argument on the fractional Laplacian equation

In this paper, we develop a direct {\em blowing-up and rescaling} argument for a nonlinear equation involving the fractional Laplacian operator. Instead of using the conventional extension method introduced by Caffarelli and Silvestre, we work directly on the nonlocal operator. Using the integral defining the nonlocal elliptic operator, by an elementary approach, we carry on a {\em blowing-up and rescaling} argument directly on nonlocal equations and thus obtain a priori estimates on the positive solutions for a semi-linear equation involving the fractional Laplacian. We believe that the ideas introduced here can be applied to problems involving more general nonlocal operators.

A Liouville theorem for $α$-harmonic functions in $\mathbb{R}^n_+$

In this paper, we consider $α$-harmonic functions in the half space $\mathbb{R}^n_+$: \begin{equation} \left\{\begin{array}{ll} (-Δ)^{α/2} u(x)=0,~u(x)>0, & x\in\mathbb{R}^n_+, \\ u(x)\equiv 0, & x\notin \mathbb{R}^{n}_{+}. \end{array}\right. \end{equation} We prove that all the solutions have to assume the form \begin{equation} u(x)=\left\{\begin{array}{ll}Cx_n^{α/2}, & \qquad x\in\mathbb{R}^n_+, \\ 0, & \qquad x\notin\mathbb{R}^{n}_{+}, \end{array}\right. \label{2} \end{equation} for some positive constant $C$.

Indefinite fractional elliptic problem and Liouville theorems

In this paper, we consider the indefinite fractional elliptic problem. A corresponding Liouville-type theorem for the indefinite fractional elliptic equations is established. Furthermore, we obtain a priori bound for solutions in a bounded domain by blowing-up and re-scaling. We also classify the solutions of some degenerate elliptic equation originated from fractional Laplacian.

Super Polyharmonic Property of Solutions for PDE Systems and Its Applications

In this paper, we prove that all the positive solutions for the PDE system (-Δ)^{k}u_{i} = f_{i}(u_{1},..., u_{m}), x \in R^{n}, i = 1, 2,..., m are super polyharmonic, i.e. (-Δ)^{j}u_{i} > 0, j = 1, 2,..., k - 1; i = 1, 2,...,m. To prove this important super polyharmonic property, we introduced a few new ideas and derived some new estimates. As an interesting application, we establish the equivalence between the integral system u_{i}(x) = \int_{R^{n}} \frac{1}{|x - y|^{n-α}}f_{i}(u_{1}(y),..., u_{m}(y))dy, x \in R^{n} and PDE system when α? = 2k < n
