AI Signal Processing Paradigm for Movable Antenna: From Spatial Position Optimization to Electromagnetic Reconfigurability

As 6G wireless communication systems evolve toward intelligence, high reconfigurability, and space-air-ground integration \cite{liu2025toward, liu2024near}, the limitations of traditional fixed antenna (TFA) have become increasingly prominent. As a remedy, spatially movable antenna (SMA) and electromagnetically reconfigurable antenna (ERA) have respectively emerged as key technologies to break through this bottleneck. SMA activates spatial degree of freedom (DoF) by dynamically adjusting antenna positions, ERA regulates radiation characteristics using tunable metamaterials, thereby introducing DoF in the electromagnetic domain. However, the ``spatial-electromagnetic dual reconfiguration" paradigm formed by their integration poses severe challenges of high-dimensional hybrid optimization to signal processing. To address this issue, we integrate the spatial optimization of SMA and the electromagnetic reconfiguration of ERA, propose a unified modeling framework termed movable and reconfigurable antenna (MARA) and investigate the channel modeling and spectral efficiency (SE) optimization for MARA. Besides, we systematically review artificial intelligence (AI)-based solutions, focusing on analyzing the advantages of AI over traditional algorithms in solving high-dimensional non-convex optimization problems. This paper fills the gap in existing literature regarding the lack of a comprehensive review on the AI-driven signal processing paradigm under spatial-electromagnetic dual reconfiguration and provides theoretical guidance for the design and optimization of 6G wireless systems with advanced MARA.

Joint Hybrid and Passive RIS-Assisted Beamforming for MmWave MIMO Systems Relying on Dynamically Configured Subarrays

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems relying on hybrid beamforming structures are capable of achieving high spectral efficiency at a low hardware complexity and low power consumption. In this paper, we propose an RIS-assisted mmWave point-to-point system relying on dynamically configured sub-array connected hybrid beamforming structures. More explicitly, an energy-efficient analog beamformer relying on twin-resolution phase shifters is proposed. Then, we conceive a successive interference cancelation (SIC) based method for jointly designing the hybrid beamforming matrix of the base station (BS) and the passive beamforming matrix of the RIS. Specifically, the associated bandwidth-efficiency maximization problem is transformed into a series of sub-problems, where the sub-array of phase shifters and RIS elements are jointly optimized for maximizing each sub-array's rate. Furthermore, a greedy method is proposed for determining the phase shifter configuration of each sub-array. We then propose to update the RIS elements relying on a complex circle manifold (CCM)-based method. The proposed dynamic sub-connected structure as well as the proposed joint hybrid and passive beamforming method strikes an attractive trade-off between the bandwidth efficiency and power consumption. Our simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method compared to its traditional counterparts.

Weighted Sum Rate Maximization of the mmWave Cell-Free MIMO Downlink Relying on Hybrid Precoding

The cell-free MIMO concept relying on hybrid precoding constitutes an innovative technique capable of dramatically increasing the network capacity of millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems. It dispenses with the cell boundary of conventional multi-cell MIMO systems, while drastically reducing the power consumption by limiting the number of radio frequency (RF) chains at the access points (APs). In this paper, we aim for maximizing the weighted sum rate (WSR) of mmWave cell-free MIMO systems by conceiving a low-complexity hybrid precoding algorithm. We formulate the WSR optimization problem subject to the transmit power constraint for each AP and the constant-modulus constraint for the phase shifters of the analog precoders. A block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm is proposed for iteratively solving the problem. In each iteration, the classic Lagrangian multiplier method and the penalty dual decomposition (PDD) method are combined for obtaining near-optimal hybrid analog/digital precoding matrices. Furthermore, we extend our proposed algorithm for deriving closed-form expressions for the precoders of fully digital cell-free MIMO systems. Moreover, we present the convergency analysis and complexity analysis of our proposed method. Finally, our simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the algorithms proposed for both fully digital and hybrid precoding matrices.

Beam Selection for Wideband Millimeter Wave MIMO Relying on Lens Antenna Arrays

Beamspace multi-input multi-output (MIMO) relying on lens antenna arrays can significantly reduce the number of radio-frequency chains in millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems through beam selection. However, the beamforming gain is actually frequency-dependent in wideband mmWave MIMO systems. This phenomenon is called beam squint, which will deteriorate the system's performance when traditional beam selection methods are used. To solve this problem, we propose a wideband beam selection method for mmWave MIMO systems relying on lens antenna arrays. Firstly, we select one beam with the maximal energy averaged over the whole band for each user and then we sequentially select the beams that contribute the most to the sum-rate. Performance analysis of the proposed wideband beam selection method is also presented. Numerical results show that the proposed method achieves higher sum-rate and energy efficiency compared with its traditional counterparts.

Beamspace Precoding and Beam Selection for Wideband Millimeter-Wave MIMO Relying on Lens Antenna Arrays

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-out (MIMO) systems relying on lens antenna arrays are capable of achieving a high antenna-gain at a considerably reduced number of radio frequency (RF) chains via beam selection. However, the traditional beam selection network suffers from significant performance loss in wideband systems due to the effect of beam squint. In this paper, we propose a phase shifter-aided beam selection network, which enables a single RF chain to support multiple focused-energy beams, for mitigating the beam squint in wideband mmWave MIMO systems. Based on this architecture, we additionally design an efficient transmit precoder (TPC) for maximizing the achievable sum-rate, which is composed of beam selection and beamspace precoding. Specifically, we decouple the design problems of beamspace precoding and beam selection by exploiting the fact that the beam selection matrix has a limited number of candidates. For the beamspace precoding design, we propose a successive interference cancellation (SIC)-based method, which decomposes the associated optimization problem into a series of subproblems and solves them successively. For the beam selection design, we propose an energy-max beam selection method for avoiding the high complexity of exhaustive search, and derive the number of required beams for striking an attractive trade-off between the hardware cost and system performance. Our simulation results show that the proposed beamspace precoding and beam selection methods achieve both a higher sum-rate and a higher energy efficiency than its conventional counterparts.

Compressive sensing based differential channel feedback for massive MIMO

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is becoming a key technology for future 5G wireless communications. Channel feedback for massive MIMO is challenging due to the substantially increased dimension of MIMO channel matrix. In this letter, we propose a compressive sensing (CS) based differential channel feedback scheme to reduce the feedback overhead. Specifically, the temporal correlation of time-varying channels is exploited to generate the differential channel impulse response (CIR) between two CIRs in neighboring time slots, which enjoys a much stronger sparsity than the original sparse CIRs. Thus, the base station can recover the differential CIR from the highly compressed differential CIR under the framework of CS theory. Simulations show that the proposed scheme reduces the feedback overhead by about 20\% compared with the direct CS-based scheme.

Joint CSIT Acquisition Based on Low-Rank Matrix Completion for FDD Massive MIMO Systems

Channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is essential for frequency-division duplexing (FDD) massive MIMO systems, but conventional solutions involve overwhelming overhead both for downlink channel training and uplink channel feedback. In this letter, we propose a joint CSIT acquisition scheme to reduce the overhead. Particularly, unlike conventional schemes where each user individually estimates its own channel and then feed it back to the base station (BS), we propose that all scheduled users directly feed back the pilot observation to the BS, and then joint CSIT recovery can be realized at the BS. We further formulate the joint CSIT recovery problem as a low-rank matrix completion problem by utilizing the low-rank property of the massive MIMO channel matrix, which is caused by the correlation among users. Finally, we propose a hybrid low-rank matrix completion algorithm based on the singular value projection to solve this problem. Simulations demonstrate that the proposed scheme can provide accurate CSIT with lower overhead than conventional schemes.

Spatially correlated channel estimation based on block iterative support detection for large-scale MIMO

Downlink channel estimation with low pilot overhead is an important and challenging problem in large-scale MIMO systems due to the substantially increased MIMO channel dimension. In this letter, we propose a block iterative support detection (block-ISD) based algorithm for downlink channel estimation to reduce the pilot overhead, which is achieved by fully exploiting the block sparsity inherent in the block-sparse equivalent channel derived from the spatial correlations of MIMO channels. Furthermore, unlike conventional compressive sensing (CS) algorithms that rely on prior knowledge of the sparsity level, block-ISD relaxes this demanding requirement and is thus more practically appealing. Simulation results demonstrate that block-ISD yields better normalized mean square error (NMSE) performance than classical CS algorithms, and achieve a reduction of 84% pilot overhead than conventional channel estimation techniques.
