Fermi isospectrality for discrete periodic Schrodinger operators

Let $Γ=q_1\mathbb{Z}\oplus q_2 \mathbb{Z}\oplus\cdots\oplus q_d\mathbb{Z}$, where $q_l\in \mathbb{Z}_+$, $l=1,2,\cdots,d$. Let $Δ+V$ be the discrete Schrödinger operator, where $Δ$ is the discrete Laplacian on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ and the potential $V:\mathbb{Z}^d\to \mathbb{R}$ is $Γ$-periodic. We prove three rigidity theorems for discrete periodic Schrödinger operators in any dimension $d\geq 3$: (1) if at some energy level, Fermi varieties of the $Γ$-periodic potential $V$ and the $Γ$-periodic potential $Y$ are the same (this feature is referred to as {\it Fermi isospectrality} of $V$ and $Y$), and $Y $ is a separable function, then $V$ is separable; (2) if potentials $V$ and $Y$ are Fermi isospectral and both $V=\bigoplus_{j=1}^rV_j$ and $Y=\bigoplus_{j=1}^r Y_j$ are separable functions, then, up to a constant, lower dimensional decompositions $V_j$ and $Y_j$ are Floquet isospectral, $j=1,2,\cdots,r$; (3) if a potential $V$ and the zero potential are Fermi isospectral, then $V$ is zero. In particular, all conclusions in (1), (2) and (3) hold if we replace the assumption "Fermi isospectrality" with a stronger assumption "Floquet isospectrality".

Small denominators and large numerators of quasiperiodic Schrödinger operators

We initiate an approach to simultaneously treat numerators and denominators of Green's functions arising from quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators, which in particular allows us to study completely resonant phases of the almost Mathieu operator. Let $ (H_{λ,α,θ}u) (n)=u(n+1)+u(n-1)+ 2λ\cos2π(θ+nα)u(n)$ be the almost Mathieu operator on $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z})$, where $λ, α, θ\in \mathbb{R}$. Let $$ β(α)=\limsup_{k\rightarrow \infty}-\frac{\ln ||kα||_{\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}}}{|k|}.$$ We prove that for any $θ$ with $2θ\in α\mathbb{Z}+\mathbb{Z}$, $H_{λ,α,θ}$ satisfies Anderson localization if $|λ|>e^{2β(α)}$. This confirms a conjecture of Avila and Jitomirskaya [The Ten Martini Problem. Ann. of Math. (2) 170 (2009), no. 1, 303--342] and a particular case of a conjecture of Jitomirskaya [Almost everything about the almost Mathieu operator. II. XIth International Congress of Mathematical Physics (Paris, 1994), 373--382, Int. Press, Cambridge, MA, 1995].

Irreducibility of the Fermi variety for discrete periodic Schrödinger operators and embedded eigenvalues

Let $H_0$ be a discrete periodic Schrödinger operator on $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z}^d)$: $$H_0=-Δ+V,$$ where $Δ$ is the discrete Laplacian and $V: \mathbb{Z}^d\to \mathbb{C}$ is periodic. We prove that for any $d\geq3$, the Fermi variety at every energy level is irreducible (modulo periodicity). For $d=2$, we prove that the Fermi variety at every energy level except for the average of the potential is irreducible (modulo periodicity) and the Fermi variety at the average of the potential has at most two irreducible components (modulo periodicity). This is sharp since for $d=2$ and a constant potential $V$, the Fermi variety at $V$-level has exactly two irreducible components (modulo periodicity). We also prove that the Bloch variety is irreducible (modulo periodicity) for any $d\geq 2$. As applications, we prove that when $V$ is a real-valued periodic function, the level set of any extrema of any spectral band functions, spectral band edges in particular, has dimension at most $d-2$ for any $d\geq 3$, and finite cardinality for $d=2$. We also show that $H=-Δ+V+v$ does not have any embedded eigenvalues provided that $v$ decays super-exponentially.

The spectra of surface Maryland model for all phases

We study the discrete Schrödinger operators $H_{λ,α,θ}$ on $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z}^{d+1})$ with surface potential of the form $V(n,x)=λδ(x)\tanπ(α\cdot n+θ)$, and $H_{λ,α,θ}^{+}$ on $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z}^{d}\times \mathbb{Z}_+)$ with the boundary condition $ ψ_{(n,-1)}=λ\tanπ(α\cdot n+θ)ψ_{(n,0)} $, where $α\in \mathbb{R}^d$ is rationally independent. We show that the spectra of $H_{λ,α,θ}$ and $H_{λ,α,θ}^{+}$ are $(-\infty,\infty)$ for all parameters. We can also determine the absolutely continuous spectra and Hausdorff dimension of the spectral measures if $d=1$.

Absolutely Continuous Spectrum for the Quasi-periodic Schrödinger Operator in Exponential Regime

Avila and Jitomirskaya prove that the quasi-periodic Schrödinger operator $H_{λv,α,θ}$ has purely absolutely continuous spectrum for $α$ in sub-exponential regime (i.e., $β(α)=0$) with small $λ$, if $v$ is real analytic in a strip of real axis. In the present paper, we show that for all $α$ with $0<β(α)<\infty$, $H_{λv,α,θ}$ has purely absolutely continuous spectrum with small $λ$, if $v$ is real analytic in strip $ |\Im x|< Cβ$, where $C$ is a large absolute constant.
