B2O3 glass former as a molecular matter revealed by heat capacity

Heat capacity of B2O3 glass former in a wide temperature region is described well with the intrinsic motions for non-spherical B2O3 molecules, revealing that rather than a conventional network glass former, B2O3 is a typical molecular matter in which the transition from liquid to glass in the system corresponds to the frozen of translational motions for molecules. The finding might provide an opportunity to understand the mysterious glass transition, as well as the intrinsic difference between solids and liquids.

The instantaneous shear modulus in the shoving model

We point out that the instantaneous shear modulus of the shoving model for the non-Arrhenius temperature dependence of viscous liquids' relaxation time is the experimentally accessible high-frequency plateau modulus, not the idealized instantaneous affine shear modulus that cannot be measured. Data for a large selection of metallic glasses are compared to three different versions of the shoving model. The original shear-modulus based version shows a slight correlation to the Poisson ratio, which is eliminated by the energy-landscape formulation of the model in which the bulk modulus plays a minor role.

Origin of the excess specific heat in metallic glass forming liquids

We report excess specific heat in a series of metallic glass forming liquids. It is found that the excess specific heat relative to glass at glass transition temperature Tg is constant and close to, where R is gas constant. In the typical Pd40Ni10Cu30P20 metallic glass forming liquid, the excess specific heat is independent of temperature. A quantitative description of the excess specific heat is built up. The atomic translational diffusion is the origin of the excess specific heat. The results provide a fundamental understanding to the glass transition in metallic glasses.

The correlation between molecular motions and heat capacity in normal ice and water

The heat capacities of ice and water at ambient pressure are reexamined to build an intrinsic correlation between H2O molecular motions and the heat capacity. Based on the evolution of H2O molecular motions, a satisfactory description of the heat capacity of ice and water is provided. The heat capacity of ice is related not only to H2O molecular vibrations, but also to the molecular rotations. In water, all H2O molecular vibrations, rotations and translations contribute to the heat capacity. The molecular translational motions are found to be the main contribution to the large heat capacity of water. The results provide a deep insight into the nature of water and ice at ambient pressure.
