Open F-branes

We include in F-theory, through open Type I F-theory branes (F-branes), string theories with N = 1 supersymmetry, both Type I and heterotic. Type I branes are distinguished from Type II by worldvolume parity projection. The same open Type I branes describe both open Type I superstrings and closed heterotic upon different sectionings from F-branes to worldsheets, while closed Type I superstrings arise from closed Type I branes. (Type II superstrings come from closed Type II branes, as described previously.) F-theory manifests the exceptional-group U-duality symmetry, with all massless bosonic fields in a single gauge coset. This coset branches to the usual bosonic supergravity fields upon sectioning. We examine in detail the simple case of D = 3 F-theory: Parity projection reduces the Type II coset SL(5)/SO(3,2) to the Type I coset SO(3,3)/SO(2,1)2 = SL(4)/SO(2,2).

Perturbative F-theory 10-brane and M-theory 5-brane

The exceptional symmetry is realized perturbatively in F-theory which is the manifest U-duality theory. The SO(5,5) U-duality symmetry acts on both the 16 spacetime coordinates and the 10 worldvolume coordinates. Closure of the Virasoro algebra requires the Gauss law constraints on the worldvolume. This set of current algebras describes a F-theory 10-brane. The SO(5,5) duality symmetry is enlarged to the SO(6,6) in the Lagrangian formulation. We propose actions of the F-theory 10-brane with SO(5,5) and SO(6,6) symmetries. The gauge fields of the latter action is coset elements of SO(6,6)/SO(6;C) which includes both the SO(5,5)/SO(5;C) spacetime backgrounds and the worldvolume backgrounds. The SO(5,5) current algebra obtained from the Pasti-Sorokin-Tonin M5-brane Lagrangian leads to the theory behind M-theory, namely F-theory. We also propose an action of the perturbative M-theory 5-brane obtained by sectioning the worldvolume of the F-theory 10-brane.

T-dual Superstring Lagrangian with double zweibeins

We present superstring Lagrangians with manifest T-duality. The Lagrangian version of the section conditions are necessary to make Lagrangians to be general coordinate invariant. We show the general solution of section conditions. The D-dimensional left and right moving currents are the 2D-dimensional chiral current which causes the chiral boson problem. We solve the problem by adding the unphysical 2D-dimensional anti-selfdual current with the selfduality constraints. The Lagrange multipliers of the selfduality constraints play the role of the worldsheet zweibein allowing the Weyl invariant and Lorentz symmetric worldsheet. Doubling the zweibein makes the type II kappa-symmetry splitting into two sets of the type I kappa-symmetries.

Critical Super F-theories

We present F-theories that reduce to 10D Type II Green-Schwarz superstrings. They vary in manifest U-duality according to division between spacetime and "internal" coordinates. They are defined by selfdual current superalgebras in higher worldvolume dimensions with manifest $\mathrm G\times \mathrm G'$ symmetry where the spacetime symmetry $\mathrm G=\mathrm E_{n(n)}$ ranges over the (split form of the) exceptional groups with ranks $n=\mathrm D+1 \leq 7$ and the internal symmetry $\mathrm {G'= GL(10-D)}$.

F-brane Dynamics

We generalize the current algebra of constraints of U-duality-covariant critical superstrings to include the generator responsible for the dynamics of the fundamental brane. This allows us to define $κ$ symmetry and to write a worldvolume action in Hamiltonian form that is manifestly supersymmetric in the target space. The Lagrangian form of this action is generally covariant, but the worldvolume metric has fewer components than expected.

Factorization of Chiral String Amplitudes

We re-examine a closed-string model defined by altering the boundary conditions for one handedness of two-dimensional propagators in otherwise-standard string theory. We evaluate the amplitudes using Kawai-Lewellen-Tye factorization into open-string amplitudes. The only modification to standard string theory is effectively that the spacetime Minkowski metric changes overall sign in one open-string factor. This cancels all but a finite number of states: As found in earlier approaches, with enough supersymmetry (e.g., type II) the tree amplitudes reproduce those of the massless truncation of ordinary string theory. However, we now find for the other cases that additional fields, formerly thought to be auxiliary, describe new spin-2 states at the two adjacent mass levels (tachyonic and tardyonic). The tachyon is always a ghost, but can be avoided in the heterotic case.

Gauging Unbroken Symmetries in F-theory

F-theory attempts to include all U-dualities manifestly. Unlike its T-dual manifest partner, which is based on string current algebra, F-theory is based on higher dimensional brane current algebra. Like the T-dual manifest theory, which has $O(D-1,1)^2$ unbroken symmetry, the F-theory vacuum also enjoys certain symmetries ("$H$"). One of its important and exotic properties is that worldvolume indices are also spacetime indices. This makes the global brane current algebra incompatible with $H$ symmetry currents. The solution is to introduce worldvolume covariant derivatives, which depend on the $H$ coordinates even in a "flat" background. We will also give as an explicit example the 5-brane case.

F-theory from Fundamental Five-branes

We describe the worldvolume for the bosonic sector of the lower-dimensional F-theory that embeds 4D, N=1 M-theory and the 3D Type II superstring. The worldvolume (5-brane) theory is that of a single 6D gauge 2-form $X_{MN}(σ^P)$ whose field strength is selfdual. Thus unlike string theory, the spacetime indices are tied to the worldsheet ones: In the Hamiltonian formalism, the spacetime coordinates are a $\mathbf{10}$ of the GL(5) of the 5 $σ$'s (neglecting $τ$). The current algebra gives a rederivation of the F-bracket. The background-independent subalgebra of the Virasoro algebra gives the usual section condition, while a new type of section condition follows from Gauß's law, tying the worldvolume to spacetime: Solving just the old condition yields M-theory, while solving only the new one gives the manifestly T-dual version of the string, and the combination produces the usual string. We also find a covariant form of the condition that dimensionally reduces the string coordinates.

F-theory Superspace

We consider, at the linearized level, the superspace formulation of lower-dimensional F-theory. In particular, we describe the embedding of 3D Type II supergravity of the superstring, or 4D, N=1 supergravity of M-theory, into the corresponding F-theory in full detail, giving the linearized action and gauge transformations in terms of the prepotential. This manifestly supersymmetric formulation reveals some features not evident from a component treatment, such as Weyl and local S-supersymmetry invariances. The linearized multiplet appears as a super 3-form (just as that for the manifestly T-dual theory is a super 2-form), reflecting the embedding of M-theory (as the T-dual theory embeds Type II supergravity). We also give the embedding of matter multiplets into this superspace, and derive the F-constraint from the gauge invariance of the gauge invariance.

F-theory with Worldvolume Sectioning

We describe the worldvolume for the bosonic sector of the lower-dimensional F-theory that embeds 5D, N=1 M-theory and the 4D type II superstring. This theory is a complexification of the fundamental 5-brane theory that embeds the 4D, N=1 M-theory of the 3D type II string in a sense that we make explicit at the level of the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations. We find three types of section condition: in spacetime, on the worldvolume, and one tying them together. The 5-brane theory is recovered from the new theory by a double dimensional reduction.

Ramond-Ramond gauge fields in superspace with manifest T-duality

A superspace with manifest T-duality including Ramond-Ramond gauge fields is presented. The superspace is defined by the double nondegenerate super-Poincare algebras where Ramond-Ramond charges are introduced by central extension. This formalism allows a simple treatment that all the supergravity multiplets are in a vielbein superfield and all torsions with dimension 1 and less are trivial. A Green-Schwarz superstring action is also presented where the Wess-Zumino term is given in a bilinear form of local currents. Equations of motion are separated into left and right modes in a suitable gauge.

Type II chiral affine Lie algebras and string actions in doubled space

We present affine Lie algebras generated by the supercovariant derivatives and the supersymmetry generators for the left and right moving modes in the doubled space. Chirality is manifest in our doubled space as well as the T-duality symmetry. We present gauge invariant bosonic and superstring actions preserving the two-dimensional diffeomorphism invariance and the kappa-symmetry where doubled spacetime coordinates are chiral fields. The doubled space becomes the usual space by dimensional reduction constraints.

Doubled α'-Geometry

We develop doubled-coordinate field theory to determine the α' corrections to the massless sector of oriented bosonic closed string theory. Our key tool is a string current algebra of free left-handed bosons that makes O(D,D) T-duality manifest. While T-dualities are unchanged, diffeomorphisms and b-field gauge transformations receive corrections, with a gauge algebra given by an α'-deformation of the duality-covariantized Courant bracket. The action is cubic in a double metric field, an unconstrained extension of the generalized metric that encodes the gravitational fields. Our approach provides a consistent truncation of string theory to massless fields with corrections that close at finite order in α'.

Natural curvature for manifest T-duality

We reformulate the manifestly T-dual description of the massless sector of the closed bosonic string, directly from the geometry associated with the (left and right) affine Lie algebra of the coset space Poincare/Lorentz. This construction initially doubles not only the (spacetime) coordinates for translations but also those for Lorentz transformations (and their dual). As a result, the Lorentz connection couples directly to the string (as does the vielbein), rather than being introduced ad hoc to the covariant derivative as previously. This not only reproduces the old definition of T-dual torsion, but automatically gives a general, covariant definition of T-dual curvature (but still with some undetermined connections).

preprint2014arXiv

Superspace with manifest T-duality from type II superstring

A superspace formulation of type II superstring background with manifest T-duality symmetry is presented. This manifestly T-dual formulation is constructed in a space spanned by two sets of nondegenerate super-Poincare algebra. Supertorsion constraints are obtained from consistency of the kappa-symmetric Virasoro constraints. All superconnections and vielbein fields are solved in terms of a prepotential which is one of the vielbein components. AdS5xS5 background is explained in this formulation.

N=2 Super-Yang-Mills Theory from a Chern-Simons Action

We present a Chern-Simons action for N=2 Super-Yang-Mills theory (SYM) in 'full' N=2 superspace (hyperspace) augmented by coordinates of the internal SU(2) group and show that this action can be reduced to the usual SYM action in the Harmonic hyperspace. We also discover that the 'choice' of Harmonic hyperspace is not unique and under suitable conditions, further reduction to the well-known Projective hyperspace is possible.

New superspaces/algebras for superparticles/strings

We describe covariant derivatives with respect to the coordinates of the full superPoincaré group and dual coordinates, for Yang-Mills and supergravity. The derivatives have engineering dimension running from 0 to 2. Prepotentials appear as potentials for Lorentz derivatives (spin). Their role is clarified in a lightcone analysis, where they also act as compensating gauge parameters and Hertz potentials. Field strengths appear as potentials for dual-coordinate derivatives, until dimensional reduction. These generalizations extend the superstring's affine Lie algebra, and generalize gauge couplings for the superparticle.

preprint2011arXiv

Yang-Mills by dimensionally reducing Chern-Simons

We derive the usual first-order form of the Yang-Mills action in arbitrary dimensions by dimensional reduction from a Chern-Simons-like action. The antisymmetric tensor auxiliary field of the first-order action appears as a gauge field for the extra dimensions. The higher-dimensional geometry was introduced in our previous paper by adding dimensions "dual" to spin, as suggested by the superstring's affine Lie algebra.

Covariant propagator in AdS5 x S5 superspace

We give an explicit superspace propagator for the chiral scalar field strength of 10D IIB supergravity on an AdS5 x S5 background. Because this space is conformally flat, the propagator is very simple, almost identical to that of flat space. We also give an explicit expansion over the Kaluza-Klein modes of S5. The fact that the full propagator is so much simpler suggests that, as in 2D conformal field theory, AdS/CFT calculations would be simpler without a mode expansion.

On Projective Hoops: Loops in Hyperspace

We (re)derive the propagators and Feynman rules for the massless scalar and vector multiplets in N=2 Projective Superspace ('Projective Hyperspace'). With these, we are able to calculate both the divergent and finite parts of 2, 3 & 4-point functions at 1-loop for N=2 Super-Yang-Mills theory (SYM) explicitly in Projective Hyperspace itself. We find that effectively only the coupling constant needs to be renormalized unlike in the N=1 case where an independent wavefunction renormalization is also required. This feature is similar to that of the background field gauge, even though we are using ordinary Fermi-Feynman gauge. The computation of 1-hoop beta-function is then straightforward and matches with the known result. We also show that it receives no 2-hoops contributions. All these calculations provide an alternative proof of the finiteness of N=4 SYM.

Supertwistor space for 6D maximal super Yang-Mills

6D maximal super Yang-Mills on-shell amplitudes are formulated in superspace using 6 dimensional twistors. The 3,4,5-point tree amplitudes are obtained by supersymmetrizing their bosonic counterparts and confirmed through the BCFW construction. In contrast to 4D this superspace is non-chiral, reflecting the fact that one cannot differentiate MHV from $\bar{\rm MHV}$ in 6D. Combined with unitarity methods, this superspace should be useful for the study of multi-loop D dimensional maximal super Yang-Mills and gravity amplitudes. Furthermore, the non-chiral nature gives a natural framework for an off-shell construction. We show this by matching our result with off-shell D=4 N=4 super Yang-Mills amplitudes, expressed in projective superspace.

Worldgraph Approach to Yang-Mills Amplitudes from N=2 Spinning Particle

By coupling the N=2 spinning particle to background vector fields, we construct Yang-Mills amplitudes for trees and one loop. The vertex operators are derived through coupling the BRST charge; therefore background gauge invariance is manifest, and the Yang-Mills ghosts are automatically included in loop calculations by worldline ghosts. Inspired by string calculations, we extend the usual worldline approach to incorporate more "generalized" 1D manifolds. This new approach should be useful for constructing higher-point and higher-loop amplitudes.

Linear Regge trajectories from worldsheet lattice parton field theory

We show that unlike conventional field theory, the particle field theory of the string's constituents produces in the ladder approximation linear Regge trajectories, in accord with its string theory dual. In this theory propagators are Gaussian and this feature facilitates the perturbative evaluation of scattering amplitudes. We develop general techniques for studying their general asymptotic form. We consider radiative corrections to the ladder Regge trajectory and discover that linearity is lost; however, this may be due to certain approximations we have made.

N=2 Harmonic Superforms, Multiplets and Actions

In this paper we develop the formalism to study superforms in N=2 harmonic superspace. We perform a thorough (if not complete) analysis of the superforms starting from 0-form and moving all the way up to 6-form. Like the N=1 case we find that the lower superforms (0,1,2,3) describe the various important N=2 supermultiplets. Also, the forms form chains, the field strength of 0-form being related to the gauge form of the 1-form, and so on. However, an important difference with the N=1 case is that there is now more than one chain. Our main aim was to study the higher-forms (4,5,6) to obtain the various N=2 action formulas via the ectoplasmic approach. Indeed, we reproduce the three known action formulas involving a volume integral, a contour integral and no integral over the harmonic subspace from the 6, 5 and 4-form analysis respectively. The next aim is to generalize the analysis to curved space-time (supergravity).

Superstrings on AdS_5 x S^5 supertwistor space

We derive the Green-Schwarz action on AdS_5 x S^5 using an alternate version of the coset superspace construction. By Wick rotations and Lie algebra identifications we bring the coset to GL(4|4)/(Sp(4) x GL(1))^2, which allows us to represent the conformal transformations on unconstrained matrices. The derivation is more streamlined even for the bosonic sector, and conformal symmetry is manifest at every step. Kappa-symmetry gauge fixing is more transparent.
