A highly accurate {\it ab initio} potential energy surface for methane

A new nine-dimensional potential energy surface (PES) for methane has been generated using state-of-the-art \textit{ab initio} theory. The PES is based on explicitly correlated coupled cluster calculations with extrapolation to the complete basis set limit and incorporates a range of higher-level additive energy corrections. These include: core-valence electron correlation, higher-order coupled cluster terms beyond perturbative triples, scalar relativistic effects and the diagonal Born-Oppenheimer correction. Sub-wavenumber accuracy is achieved for the majority of experimentally known vibrational energy levels with the four fundamentals of $^{12}$CH$_4$ reproduced with a root-mean-square error of $0.70{\,}$cm$^{-1}$. The computed \textit{ab initio} equilibrium C{--}H bond length is in excellent agreement with previous values despite pure rotational energies displaying minor systematic errors as $J$ (rotational excitation) increases. It is shown that these errors can be significantly reduced by adjusting the equilibrium geometry. The PES represents the most accurate \textit{ab initio} surface to date and will serve as a good starting point for empirical refinement.

Accurate Prediction of the Ammonia Probes of a Variable Proton-to-Electron Mass Ratio

A comprehensive study of the mass sensitivity of the vibration-rotation-inversion transitions of $^{14}$NH$_3$, $^{15}$NH$_3$, $^{14}$ND$_3$, and $^{15}$ND$_3$ is carried out variationally using the TROVE approach. Variational calculations are robust and accurate, offering a new way to compute sensitivity coefficients. Particular attention is paid to the $Δk=\pm 3$ transitions between the accidentally coinciding rotation-inversion energy levels of the $ν_2=0^+,0^-,1^+$ and $1^-$ states, and the inversion transitions in the $ν_4=1$ state affected by the "giant" $l$-type doubling effect. These transitions exhibit highly anomalous sensitivities, thus appearing as promising probes of a possible cosmological variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio $μ$. Moreover, a simultaneous comparison of the calculated sensitivities reveals a sizeable isotopic dependence which could aid an exclusive ammonia detection.

Vibrational transition moments of CH$_4$ from first principles

A new nine-dimensional (9D), \textit{ab initio} electric dipole moment surface (DMS) of methane in its ground electronic state is presented. The DMS is computed using an explicitly correlated coupled cluster CCSD(T)-F12 method in conjunction with an F12-optimized correlation consistent basis set of the TZ-family. A symmetrized molecular bond representation is used to parameterise the 9D DMS in terms of sixth-order polynomials. Vibrational transition moments as well as band intensities for a large number of IR-active vibrational bands of $^{12}$CH$_4$ are computed by vibrationally averaging the \textit{ab initio} dipole moment components. The vibrational wavefunctions required for these averages are computed variationally using the program TROVE and a new `spectroscopic' $^{12}$CH$_4$ potential energy surface. The new DMS will be used to produce a hot line list for $^{12}$CH$_4$.
