Fermion pair radiation from accelerating classical systems

Accelerating classical systems that couple to a fermion-antifermion pair at the microscopic level can radiate pairs of fermions and lose energy in the process. In this work, we derive the generalization of the Larmor formula for fermion pair radiation. We focus on the case of a point-like classical source in an elliptical orbit that emits fermions through vector and scalar mediators. Ultra-light fermion emission from such systems becomes relevant when the mass of the mediator is larger than the frequency of the periodic motion. This enables us to probe regions of the parameter space that are inaccessible in on-shell bosonic radiation. We apply our results to pulsar binaries with mediators that couple to muons and neutrinos. Using current data on binary period decays, we extract bounds on the parameters of such models.

Dodelson-Widrow Mechanism In the Presence of Self-Interacting Neutrinos

keV-scale gauge-singlet fermions, allowed to mix with the active neutrinos, are elegant dark matter (DM) candidates. They are produced in the early universe via the Dodelson-Widrow mechanism and can be detected as they decay very slowly, emitting X-rays. In the absence of new physics, this hypothesis is virtually ruled out by astrophysical observations. Here, we show that new interactions among the active neutrinos allow these sterile neutrinos to make up all the DM while safely evading all current experimental bounds. The existence of these new neutrino interactions may manifest itself in next-generation experiments, including DUNE.

Origin of Sterile Neutrino Dark Matter via Vector Secret Neutrino Interactions

Secret neutrino interactions can play an essential role in the origin of dark matter. We present an anatomy of production mechanisms for sterile neutrino dark matter, a keV-scale gauge-singlet fermion that mixes with active neutrinos, in the presence of a new vector boson mediating secret interactions among active neutrinos. We identify three regimes of the vector boson's mass and coupling where it makes distinct impact on dark matter production through the dispersion relations and/or scattering rates. We also analyze models with gauged $L_μ-L_τ$ and $B-L$ numbers which have a similar dark matter cosmology but different vector boson phenomenology. We derive the parameter space in these models where the observed relic abundance is produced for sterile neutrino dark matter. They serve as well-motivated target for the upcoming experimental searches.

Probing the two-neutrino exchange force using atomic parity violation

The exchange of two neutrinos at one loop leads to a long-range parity-violating force between fermions. We explore the two-neutrino force in the backdrop of atomic physics. We point out that this is the largest parity-violating long-range force in the Standard Model and calculate the effect of this force in experiments that probe atomic parity violation by measuring optical rotation of light as it passes through a sample of vaporized atoms. We perform explicit calculations for the hydrogen atom to demonstrate this effect. Although we find that the effect is too small to be observed in hydrogen in the foreseeable future, our approach may be applied to other setups where long-range parity violation is large enough to be probed experimentally.

Extending the scope of holographic mutual information and chaotic behavior

We extend the use of holography to investigate the scrambling properties of various physical systems. Specifically, we consider: (i) non-conformal backgrounds of black $Dp$ branes, (ii) asymptotically Lifshitz black holes, and (iii) black $AdS$ solutions of Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We use the disruption of the entanglement entropy as a probe of the chaotic features of such systems. Our analysis shows that these theories share the same type of behavior as conformal theories as they undergo chaos; however, in the case of Gauss-Bonnet gravity, we find a stark difference in the evolution of the mutual information for negative Gauss-Bonnet coupling. This may signal an inconsistency of the latter.

Holographic Schwinger effect in de Sitter space

Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we construct the holographic dual of a tunneling instanton describing Schwinger pair creation in de Sitter space. Our approach allows us to extract the critical value of the electric field for which the potential barrier disappears, rendering the vacuum unstable. In addition, we compute the large-$λ$, large-$N_c$ corrections to the nucleation rate and we find that it agrees with previous expectations based on perturbative computations. As a by-product of this investigation, we study the causal structure of the string dual to the nucleated pair as seen by different static observers and we show that it can be interpreted as a dynamical creation of a `gluonic' wormhole. We explain how this result provides further evidence for the ER=EPR conjecture as an equivalence between two descriptions of the same physical phenomenon.

Radiative neutrino masses in the singlet-doublet fermion dark matter model with scalar singlets

When the singlet-doublet fermion dark matter model is extended with additional $Z_2$--odd real singlet scalars, neutrino masses and mixings can be generated at one-loop level. In this work, we discuss the salient features arising from the combination of the two resulting simplified dark matter models. When the $Z_2$-lightest odd particle is a scalar singlet, $\operatorname{Br}(μ\to e γ)$ could be measurable provided that the singlet-doublet fermion mixing is small enough. In this scenario, also the new decay channels of vector-like fermions into scalars can generate interesting leptonic plus missing transverse energy signals at the LHC. On the other hand, in the case of doublet-like fermion dark matter, scalar coannihilations lead to an increase in the relic density which allow to lower the bound of doublet-like fermion dark matter.

A Singlet Extension of the MSSM with a Dark Matter Portal

The minimal extension of the MSSM (NMSSM) has been widely studied in the search for a natural solution to the $μ$ problem. In this work, we consider a variation of the NMSSM where an extra singlet is added and a Peccei-Quinn symmetry is imposed. We study its neutralino sector and compute the annihilation cross section of the lightest neutralino. We use existent cosmological and collider data to constrain the parameter space and consider the lightest neutralino, which is very light, as a dark matter candidate.

Fluctuation and dissipation in de Sitter space

In this paper we study some thermal properties of quantum field theories in de Sitter space by means of holographic techniques. We focus on the static patch of de Sitter and assume that the quantum fields are in the standard Bunch-Davies vacuum. More specifically, we follow the stochastic motion of a massive charged particle due to its interaction with Hawking radiation. The process is described in terms of the theory of Brownian motion in inhomogeneous media and its associated Langevin dynamics. At late times, we find that the particle undergoes a regime of slow diffusion and never reaches the horizon, in stark contrast to the usual random walk behavior at finite temperature. Nevertheless, the fluctuation-dissipation theorem is found to hold at all times.

Implications Of A Dark Sector U(1) For Gamma Ray Bursts

We discuss the implications for gamma ray burst studies, of a dark unbroken $U(1)_D$ sector that couples predominantly through gravity to the visible sector. The dominant dark matter component remains neutral under $U(1)_D$. The collapsar model is assumed to explain the origin of long gamma ray bursts. The main idea is that by measuring the change in stellar black hole spin during the duration of the GRB, one can make inferences about the existence of a dark matter accretion disk. This could potentially provide evidence for the existence for a $U(1)_D$ sector.

Strong Subadditivity, Null Energy Condition and Charged Black Holes

Using the Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi (HRT) conjectured formula for entanglement entropy in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence with time-dependent backgrounds, we investigate the relation between the bulk null energy condition (NEC) of the stress-energy tensor with the strong sub-additivity (SSA) property of entanglement entropy in the boundary theory. In a background that interpolates between an AdS to an AdS-Reissner-Nordstrom-type geometry, we find that generically there always exists a critical surface beyond which the violation of NEC would naively occur. However, the extremal area surfaces that determine the entanglement entropy for the boundary theory, can penetrate into this forbidden region only for certain choices for the mass and the charge functions in the background. This penetration is then perceived as the violation of SSA in the boundary theory. We also find that this happens only when the critical surface lies above the apparent horizon, but not otherwise. We conjecture that SSA, which is thus non-trivially related to NEC, also characterizes the entire time-evolution process along which the dual field theory may thermalize.

Supersymmetric Partially Interacting Dark Matter

We present a model of partially interacting dark matter (PIDM) within the framework of supersymmetry with gauge mediated symmetry breaking. Dark sector atoms are produced through Affleck-Dine baryogenesis in the dark sector while avoiding the production of Q-ball relics. We discuss the astrophysical constraints relevant for this model and the possibility of dark galactic disk formation. In addition, jet emission from rotating black holes is discussed in the context of this class of models.

Vector-like Fields, Messenger Mixing and the Higgs mass in Gauge Mediation

In order to generate, in the context of gauge mediation, a Higgs mass around 126 GeV that avoids the little hierarchy problem, we explore a set of models where the messengers are directly coupled to new vector-like fields at the TeV scale in addition to the usual low energy degrees of freedom. We find that in this context, stop masses lighter than 2 TeV and large $A$-terms are generated, thereby improving issues of fine tuning.
